    1. [SCKY] SURNAMES FACING EXTINCTION
    2. Sandi Gorin via
    3. Just a little extra today. I'm hoping that none of our surnames are about to be extinct! But, according to MyHeritage, names with less than 200 bearers is considered endangered. If any of your kinfolk had these names, you'd better protect them by getting them on a family tree! Last names with less than 20 bearers (people who have that surname): Sallow, Fernsby, Villin/Villan, Miracle, Dankworth, Relish, MacQuoid, Loughty, Birdwhistle, Berrycloth, Culpepper and Tumbler. Endangered last names with under 200 bearers: Ajax, Edevane, Gastrell and Slora. Last names presumed extinct since 2011: Bread, MacCaa, Spinster, Pussett/Puscat/Pussmaid, Bythesea and Bytheseashore. (Interesting names but I used to work for a Mrs. Birdbath!) MyHeritage states they are becoming extinct because they are linked to uncommon professions or geographic areas while names like Smith, Brown and Baker remain popular. Many surnames were wiped out due to war. Some names from Eastern Europe have just become anglicized. And, from my own family tree, there were more girls born in a family than boys who would carry on the family name.
