Samuel R. Smith served in the Spanish American War. Born Apr, 1871, died 12 Aug 1932. He resided in Barren Co., KY, removed to near Arcola, Douglas Co., IL, then to Vigo Co., IN, where he died. His grave is marked with a military marker. From records I located, it appears he must have enlisted in Douglas Co., IL. Son of Rev. Andrew Jackson "Uncle Jack" Smith (Methodist minister) and Elizabeth (Moulder) Smith. Married Lenola E. "Nola" Quigley, born Aug 1875, Barren Co., KY, died after Dec 1936, probably Vigo Co., IN, dau. of Wilson D. Quigley and Malinda C. (Arteburn) Quigley. My elderly aunt thinks Samuel also married Lenola's sister previously (unidentified), but she died quite young. His wife Lenola "Nola" may have returned to Kentucky, as one pension application indicates it was filed from that state. Children: infant son, Cecil, Brackie L., Hattie M., Oscar W., Emma DeLoris. I am a descendant of Samuel's parents: Andrew Jackson "Uncle Jack" Smith and wife Elizabeth (Moulder) Smith. Does anyone have access to Methodist church records? Andrew was a Methodist minister, according to a brief death notice, but I cannot identify the church with which he was affiliated. July 7, 1910: Death Notice: “Andrew Jackson ‘Uncle Jack’ Smith, an old time preacher of the Methodist persuasion, died at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Jo D. Walker of Old Eighty Eight, last week, at the age of 80. Buried in the Payne burying ground at the edge of Monroe county.” Obituary: “Rev. A. J. Smith, an aged Methodist minister, died at the home of his son-in-law at Eighty-Eight, a few days ago. He was eighty years old, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow and six children, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Rilda Sabens, Miss Lou Smith, and Messrs. Sam and Millard Smith – the two last living in Glasgow – and Mr. Bunyon Smith, of Illinois. Walker" was Joseph David Walker (married Cordelia Kittybird Smith, dau. of Andrew and Elizabeth, noted above).
