Good morning! I hope that if you see something I have posted and you have additional information that you will reply to the list. It just might help someone else on the list! Secondly; if you are looking for information on an ancestor who lived in the counties covered by this list with surnames beginning with N through R, feel free to post it to the list. Also, if you have information that could help this individual, please post your replies to the list - and you of course can write the person privately too. Tip of the week: Many times the only place where you can find information relative to the death of one of your ancestors is with the funeral home. Now - there were no funeral homes truly operating as such until the 1900s and many of these funeral homes have changed ownership over the years and the earlier records might not have been preserved. Most funeral homes maintain their records in either oversized ledger books or on index cards. They have no obligation of sharing information with you from their records; these are private records and could contain confidential information as to costs, payments, etc. However, if you contact a funeral home, many are very helpful in supplying information that would help the researcher. This could include: Name of deceased, date of death, location of death, cause of death, birth date, place of birth, occupation, whether served in the military, occupation, how long a resident of the state, how long a resident of the county, name of parents, place of birth of parents, and the names of wife/husband, children, brothers and sisters - sometimes with their locations. It can also include church membership. Finally, the records will show the date and location of the funeral and place of burial. If you do contact a funeral home, don't be pushy! You can explain to them that this was your so and so relative, you are a genealogist and have no interest in the cost of the funeral, whether they paid or not, the type of coffin, etc. If you write, enclose a SASE. Many funeral homes today are entering all their records on the computer and it might be possible that they can send you the information via e-mail or an attachment. Thank them very much. I have worked with our two major funeral homes here and established a good working relationship with them and they have opened up their records for me. I have finished transcribing through about 1961 for both. But again, if they say no, accept it and thank them!
