This is a note about Jonathan Davis, but it starts with Joel Moore. Joel Moore (and wife Regina Hestand) came to Monroe(Barren) Co in the summer of 1800. He settled on 400 acres which touched Mill Creek and contained the Harlan's Crossroads (HC) cemetery. Joel was dead by 1840 and at that time his original land grant was shared by his sons Jeremiah and John W Moore (my ancestor). In the early 1850s Jeremiah migrated west (to Missouri and then Kansas), but John W Moore stayed. Not long after Jeremiah left, a Jonathan Davis appeared (from east TN) and occupied the land vacated by Jeremiah. There are no Monroe Co deeds that would show the transfer of Jeremiah's land to Jonathan Davis (these were burned in the war). The Davis's and Moores lived next to each other on this land well into the 20th century. Two of Jonathan Davis's children married children of John W Moore and the families were close in many ways. For example, The Davis family buried their dead in the old Moore family cemetery, which eventually became the Harlan's Crossroads Cemetery (circa 1900). I have often wondered if there might be an early TN or NC connection between these two families. For example, did Jonathan Davis show up in Monroe Co at the time of Jeremiah Moore's departure because he knew that the land would be there for him? I have done just a little research (census only) on the Davis family in east TN. I find Jonathan Davis in Knox Co in 1850, living next to a Joshua Davis (probably a brother). In 1840 Jonathan and Joshua can be found living next to each other in Greene Co. Prior to this they would have still been in NC, their birth state. You can see what I have on Jonathan Davis in my WorldConnect database at the URL below: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dougmoore&id=I13201 Does anyone know any more about this Davis clan?
