    1. [SCKY] MONROE CO - STEAMBOAT ROAD
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. This was taken from the 18 Apr 1974 issue of The Tompkinsville News: In the long ago what gave the name of the road leading from the headwaters of Marrowbone Creek to a section of the country some six miles south of there, now known as the PALMORE settlement through what has always been called the big woods. In these days the farmers shipped their tobacco to New Orleans by barges, made by land. During this time one year, a man by the name of AMYX made a trip to New Orleans to try to get a steamboat to come up the river to get their tobacco. During the time he was gone to see after getting the steamboat, the neighbors on both sides of this big woods made arrangements and started on each end to open a wider and better road until they met. During the time the men were opening out the road said they were getting it ready for Louis Amyx' steamboat to come along and so it has always been called the steamboat road. On the west side of this road about one mile there stood a large beech tree and travelers cut their initials and date until the main trunk of the tree was about as full and high as one could reach and that was called the "Marked Beech" when they were trying to locate the whereabouts, etc., of their hogs and cattle, etc. Deer and wild turkeys and all game animals were in those woods and there were other noted places. One other steep hill, so steep that you could not ride your horse down, and the road was called the "Winding Stairs." Author was J. B. Harvey. Do any of you have other information you'd like to share on the list about this road or area?
