    3. As a few listers have reminded me - one point I overlooked was that by giving an heir $1.00 included him/her so as to hopefully prevent breaking of the will. And yes - normally the sons got land, the daughters could have received previously as part of their dowery .. but gals did get land too - or their new husbands did. Land given to a son-in-law normally became his total property as for many years, married women had no rights to own land in their own name. One will see in some wills when a daughter does receive land or goods, it might be added "not to be under the control of her husband" or "separate and apart from her husband." This wasn't because papa didn't like his S-I-L but to protect his daughter's rights.
