Just a random thought or so to end the week. First, the hackers are still slamming lists and another one of our members has had her password compromised. If you receive a post from anyone, off or on the list, with a strange message and a link, please don't click on it. The one I received this morning was a standard one where the list member was supposedly trapped in Spain (pick any country), had their passport and money stolen and needed me to wire them money immediately so they could return home. The list is endless - links to a site where someone supposedly got independently wealthy, etc. Just be careful! On a personal note. I've mentioned before that when we get stuck on our research, that it helps to go back and review what we did - sometimes many years ago. I just had this happen again. I'm working on a book on the Creek and Webb families of Warren and Barren Co KY who spread out all over, many settling in Franklin County, IL. I had a stack of papers 8 inches tall at least of data - family sheets, pedigree charts, names, names, names! This line is of interest to me as one of the early Gorin brothers, Gladin, had a daughter Sarah who married into the Creek family. But, I'd put it aside and forgotten about the tons of papers I had - it is a large family! This week I have been sorting through all those documents and getting them in order to present as a book when bingo - two things hit me like a ton of bricks. My maternal grandfather, John Logan Pyle, was born and raised in Franklin Co IL. In going through the paperwork two names popped out at me as if in neon flashing lights. One of the Webbs (who intermarried with the Creeks in Franklin Co) had a wife, Sarah Pyle; another had a wife, a Smothers. Hey! Those tie in with my family tree. My grandfather's mother was a Smothers and I had learned over the years that all the Pyle and Smothers families in Franklin Co IL were kin. So now, I have some searching to do. Is my family connected to the Webbs and Creeks from this part of the country? Remember, I am a Gorin by marriage; my own family had just a brief connection to KY, in Adair Co. Maybe I do have some roots here that I didn't know about. Again, it might be a good idea to go through those stacks of papers. Take a second look at the brick walls you encountered years ago and maybe one more brick will crumble. Our society meeting last night was really great; Sam Terry, one of our past presidents, put on a power-point presentation on some of our female ancestors in Barren Co who made a difference. The summer issue of our quarterly, "Traces" will expand on the list of 5 gals Sam told us about and add 11 more - some quite interesting. Have a great weekend and I hope to see you all on Monday!
