    3. Flem Bowles and Sarah Smith married December 3, 1891, by J. S. Sewell, M.G., at the Courthouse, Monroe County, Kentucky; witnesses were Ben Franklin and Dr. F. Duncan. Source: Marriages, Monroe County, Kentucky, Marcella P. Headrick, p. 12. Sarah Smith's full name was Sarah Lou Ann Smith, one of 10 children of a Methodist minister, Andrew Jackson "Uncle Jack" SMITH (30 Dec 1829, Clinton Co., KY - 22 June 1910, Glover's Creek, Old Eighty-Eight, Barren Co., KY) and his wife Elizabeth (MOULDER) SMITH (27 July 1834, Warren Co., TN - 20 December 1920, Barren Co., KY); and she was affectionately called "Aunt Lou". Reverend Andrew "Uncle Jack" and Elizabeth (Moulder) Smith are buried in Payne Cemetery. Elizabeth (MOULDER) SMITH was a daughter of Samuel MOULDER and Nancy (LUSTER) MOULDER. Andrew Jackson (A. J. or "Uncle Jack) SMITH was a son of Robert SMITH and Virginia Jane "Jenny" (LUSTER) SMITH, of Clinton Co., KY. Jenny's Nob in Clinton County, KY is named in her honor, as her family lived near its base. My great-grandparents were Joseph David "Joe D." WALKER and his wife Cordelia "Cordie" Kittybird (SMITH) WALKER (daughter of Andrew J. SMITH and Elizabeth MOULDER). Joseph David WALKER was a son of Samuel Houston WALKER and Martha Jane EMBERTON, members of Mt. Gilead Church, Monroe Co., KY. My Walker ancestors were (and are) musicians ("The Walker Family"), in the area called Nobob, KY. My Smith ancestors, among the earliest members of Clear Fork Baptist Church, descend from George SMITH (Schmidt) and Rebecca (BOWEN) SMITH of Wayne / Clinton Counties, Kentucky – very early settlers there. The minister "Raccoon" John Smith is from this lineage. Sarah "Lou" (Smith) Bowles married again: Thomas William "Will" Dillon. They lived for a time in Clay Co., Missouri, then returned to the Temple Hill area, Barren Co., KY. Thomas William "Will" Dillon died April 8, 1930; and Sarah Lou Ann (Smith) Bowles Dillon died January 17, 1955. Fleming "Flem" C. Bowles and Sarah Lou Ann (Smith) Bowles had only one child, then divorced. Flem probably subsequently married Sarah Bell Carter (12 Feb 1866 - 29 Nov 1925), who is buried beside him in the Carter Cemetery, Monroe County, Kentucky. Obituary of father of Sarah Lou Ann "Aunt Lou" (SMITH) BOWLES DILLON: “Rev. A. J. Smith, an aged Methodist minister, died at the home of his son-in-law at Eighty-Eight, a few days ago. He was eighty years old, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow and six children, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Rilda Sabens, Miss Lou Smith, and Messrs. Sam and Millard Smith – the two last living in Glasgow – and Mr. Bunyon Smith, of Illinois. The remains were interred in the Payne burying ground in the edge of Monroe County.” Source: Glasgow Times, July 7, 1910. In the above obituary, Rev. Smith's son-in-law was Joseph David Walker (m. Cordelia Kittybird "Cordie" Smith), my great-grandparents. I have not identified the Methodist Church, with which my great-great grandfather Andrew Jackson Smith was affiliated. If anyone has information, I would be grateful. He was born in Clinton Co., KY; and sometime during the Civil War, they escaped the atrocities of "Champ" Ferguson and others, by removing first to Tompkinsville, Monroe Co., KY (before 1870), then afterwards to Barren Co., KY. I've wondered if Andrew J. Smith's Methodist Church affiliation was first with a church in Tompkinsville? I also would appreciate a more full accounting of the trials and tribulations of the failed marriage of Flem and Sarah "Aunt Lou" (Smith) Bowles. I imagine it's quite salacious and sexist, given the context of their timeframe. "Lou" was the sister of my great-grandmother Cordelia Kittybird "Cordie" (Smith) Walker. 3. I, for one, will be disappointed if you discontinue the "puzzler". The puzzlers are for our "enrichment and education". I may think I know the answer, but the answer can be so much more than what I thought I knew. Yes, they are helpful in that the puzzlers make you stop and think. They may help you with just that one step of research you hadn't thought of until you read the puzzler. Della > 2. 1. [SCKY] CONTINUATION OF OLD LAND TERMS - CONCLUSION
    2. Sandi Gorin via
    3. I'm concluding the definition of terms used in the old land grants and often deeds. Many times as we read through these old documents we don't know what a word means - or it means something different now from what it meant then. Stamp - also known as a revenue stamp or tax stamp. This is affixed to documents such as deeds, marriage bonds, tobacco products, etc. to show that fees or taxes have been paid. State Warrant. This is the same as a Treasury Warrant. State-land-state: Any state not in federal public domain. Has or has had a land office for in-state land appropriations. The original 13 colonies plus Kentucky, Maine, Vermont, Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia & Hawaii are - or have been - state-land states. Survey: the third step in land patenting. This survey consists of a plat drawing, metes & bounds description and identification of the survey team. Survey certificate: often refers to the metes and bounds and a description of the survey. Surveying company: Business entities that surveyed frontier Kentucky and negotiated treaties with the Native Americans. Claims by surveying companies were declared void by Virginia and Kentucky government land laws. Tellico Patent Series: Land patents covering that part of Southeastern KY acquired by the 1805 Treaty of Tellico with the Cherokee Indian Nation. Third-rate land: For tax purposes, this land had the lowest appraisal rate. It had a difficult terrain and may be described as untillable. Tithable: the taxpayer. Township: one square block consisting of 36 sections. Each section equals one square mile; used in public land system of mapping. It covers 36 square miles. Trace: A path or trail. A beaten path left by the passage of people, buffalo, etc., became an early road. Transit: a surveyor's instrument used to determine arc or horizontal angles; may be mounted on a tripod. Transylvania Company: A land company organized by Richard Henderson who negotiated and signed the 1775 treaty with the Cherokee at Sycamore Shoals. Treasury Warrant: Also referred to as a State Warrant. Purchased from Virginia or Kentucky Land Office; no military service or residency requirement necessary to purchase these. Venue: County or locality in which an action occurs; that part of a declaration that designates the county in which the action occurs. Virginia Patent Series: Earliest series of land patents in Kentucky; grants signed by Virginia governors. These pre-date June 1, 1792 and includes military patents. Walk-around survey: A survey drawing that is larger than the actual tract being patented; surveyors often identified properties to be excluded from patents' acreage. Warrant: 1st step in land patenting; this document authorizes the survey. It may be combined with other warrants to increase acreage. West of Tennessee River Military Patents: Land patents issued to Revolutionary War soldiers or their assignees after the Jackson Purchase was acquired. West of Tennessee Non-Military Patents: Land patents for the Jackson Purchase area; land sold by quarter section; the Governor's grant finalized the patent. I hope this multi-series has been a help to you. I am looking for information on Patience Logsdon and husband John Flatt. John Flatt operated Flatt's Ferry and I'm looking for the time period and location. Patience Logsdon Flatt supposedly died 1815 in Barren Co and is buried near the mouth of Mammoth Cave. Any information on them would be appreciated. I'm trying to figure out who Patience parents were. Thanks... Gloria in CA

    1. [SCKY] ASSORTED MONROE CO CIRCUIT COURT CASES - GUM(M)
    2. Sandi Gorin via
    3. I have published several volumes on Circuit Court records of Monroe Co. These were "rescued" by the late Eva Coe Peden, Gladys Wilson and I believe Birdie Lutzow many years ago when the clerk there decided to destroy most of the old and dirty records cluttering the court house attic. They gathered as many cases as they could as they were tossed from the attic window to prisoners, placed in trucks and taken to the dump. Some of the cases are not complete and do not show the final court decision. It is such a shame to lose this information! For several weeks I will abstract through cases that were saved. J A BOW, plaintiff vs Sarah J Bow, 4 June 1898, divorce. They were married in March 1896, now live in KY. Cause for the divorce occurred within 5 years before the commencement of this divorce action. Sarah lives in Monroe County. Couple lived together from the time of marriage until November 1896; defendant then left him and refuses to live with him. He treated her with kindness and affections, provided for her needs. (Note: There was standard wording in divorce cases). He now asks for a divorce; Sherman Spear was his attorney. Depositions were taken then of Jack GUM on 4 June 1898. Gum was then 53 years old, lived Monroe Co, farmer. Had known plaintiff about 2 years and defendant all his life. Sarah J. Bow was his step-mother. Knew a little about the treatment of J A to Sarah. Had never heard of any abuse. They separated about Nov. 1896; They had married in Monroe Co; she still lives there; defendant tried to get her to come home but she refused. Deposition of Joe GUMM (spelled both ways). 31 years old, lived Monroe Co, farmer. Knew plaintiff about 3 years and the defendant all his life, is the defendant's son. Couple were married at her house in Monroe Co. Plaintiff did not abuse her or treat her cruelly. No resolution found in file.
