I normally don't post on Friday's, but I recently found this and thought it might be of interest to some of our readers. I have been working with the applications for pension for Confederate soldiers after the Civil War. As with the Union soldiers, many of our young men came home ill, broken in body and in poor financial shapes. Their families back home were suffering the same; their cattle might have been taken to feed the troops, horses taken for the war effort and food and money taken. It was a time of great hardship for many. Ambrose S. Clayton of Barren County applied for a pension when it was offered. Many pages of documents were filled in with information that would help descendants, many years later, get a picture of his life, both in and out of service. In his application for pension, Ambrose stated that he lived in Glasgow, Barren County and served from there in the war. He was in Company E, Sixth Infantry, The Orphan Brigade, Breckinridge's Division, Army of Tennessee, C.S.A. He had enlisted on Nov 20, 1876, Jo Lewis Regt, 6th KY. Company officers he listed included Col. Jos. H. Lewis, Lt. Col Martin H. Cofer, Major T. H Hayes. When asked if he had ever been in prison he said yes, in Glasgow, for one week. He was not paroled. He had taken the oath of allegiance to the United States Government in order to be discharged. He was now not employed because of his disabilities caused by the war. His estate was about $1500. He was asked what estate his wife had - none, she was an invalid. His income for the past year was about $100. He was asked if he used intoxicants and he replied "None at all." He had been a resident of KY all his life. His attorney as J. A. Murray of Glasgow. He signed the application and it was witnessed by Wm. Steenbergen and Dr. C. Grinstead. Statements were taken of both with Dr. Grinstead stating some of Clayton's injuries. Steenbergen wrote of Clayton's service as he knew it. Next week - the report of the Pension Examiner's office in Frankfort and more. The counties I am most interested in are Hardin, Breckenridge, Fayette, Nelson, Washington, and Greene. Besides county name lists and surname lists, what other lists do I need to join for more info on my Kentucky ancestors? Thanks, Norma Roberts.
Very recently Rev. Jacob Lock's personal family bible has been located, it was passed down to his youngest son George Francis Lock, then passed down to the youngest grand son Columbus B. Lock and it is currently owned by one of Columbus's female descendants in Texas. I thought I would share some of the inscriptions in regards to the Harper and Jett named in the bible. William Harper, son of Hance Harper was born September the _____ in the year of 1793. Margaret, his daughter, was born January the 19th 1816. Maria, his daughter, was born February 15th, 1818. Nanny Harper, his daughter was born, March the 11th, 1820. Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Hiram Harper, was born March 14th, 1825. America Ann, daughter of Hiram H. Harper, was born May [11], 1827. Note by Don; The page is in very poor condition, the part of the page with William Harpers day of birth is missing. Anthony Jett deceased December 2nd 1819 – Father of Margaret Locke, wife of Jacob Lock Senr. While the majority of the Lock family information from the inscriptions we already knew about from the vital records and other various records, there were a few surprises and a couple of questions over dates that do not match up between what is inscribed in the bible versus the vital records we have copies of. The one big piece of information in the bible is the death dates of Richard Lock & wife Mary "possibly Fitzgerald?" parents of Rev. Jacob Lock. Richard Locke, Senr. Deceased April the 26th 1786 was the original transcription done by my cousin who owns the bible, but upon further scruiteny and looking at the entry at a higher image resolution we now believe his death date to be April 26, 1776 not 1786. The ink is quite faded and at first glance it appears to say 1786 but when I view that date at a higher image resolution, it appears there maybe ink bleed through making the 7 appear to be an 8. The 1776 date makes a whole lot more sense when compared to the estate index sale record dated 1777 in Berkeley County Virginia in which everything on Richard Lock's farm was being sold to pay of his debts after his death, so the 1776 death date appears to be the correct date. Mary Locke, his wife, deceased August the 13th 1785, her maiden name is unknown to us, but it has been claimed by an unknown researcher that her surname is Fitzgerald though we have never been able to confirm that is her maiden name. I have been searching for this family bible for 2 decades along with other family members, we had all but given up hope and suddenly it is found! :) I am now searching for 2 other family bibles that could help give more family details that have remained a mystery for decades due to a lack of records being found. But Rev. Jacob Lock's bible is the ultimate find! The bible was published in 1812, the year my ancestor George Francis Lock was born. Donald Locke

I think it's Monday again ... those weekends go quickly don't they? Charlie has put up the puzzler of the week. I hope I get a LOT of guesses on this one as believe me, some friends of mine didn't know the answer to this one and it really surprised me! Give it a try by clicking on the link in my signature line called Sandi's puzzlers. In my "spare" time, I finished another book in the land grant series. I'm working on counties that involve south central Kentucky and which I have a personal interest in too. This volume is on Logan County which was once a very large county and has been reduced many times over the years. There are Barren Co people in it which of course split off into other counties. As with the earlier series, I'm showing the name of the individual seeking a land grant, the number of acres, the date the land was surveyed, the book where it was registered and the location based on the nearest waterway, if any. There are about 3,300 land entries shown. The book also includes progressive maps of Logan Co from formation through changes, list of the major waterways now in existence, a brief history of the county, a write-up on the Red River and Gasper River and of the Great Revival (Awakening as it was called) that took place here. I have tried to correct errors in spelling of the names which are shown in error. If you have interest, you may contact me privately reference the availability, etc. Now - go out and have a great day; we might as well since there is a whole week ahead of us! As you know, Warren County is the parent county of Barren, thus the grandparent of counties which were formed from Barren Co. Many of Barren's early citizens thus were originally found in the records of Warren Co. The Circuit Court Order Book 1 of Warren County covers the time frame of 1797 thru 1801; Barren Co was formed in 1798. For a time, I'm going to take a look at this order book - which was the record of the transactions of the Circuit Court. 6 June 1797: Held at the house of Robert MOORE with Burwell JACKSON, John SHANNON and John HALL, Esquires, present. Havilah CRUMP produced a license from the Judges of the Court of Appeals allowing him to practice as an attorney. He took the oaths required. A jury consisting of John CURD (foreman), John COX, Gladin GORIN, William MEANS, William JONES, Henry GORIN, Freeman JONES, David BOYLES, Joseph SNODGRASS, William ALLISON, Alexander STUART, William ANDERSON, Vincent ANDERSON, John MILLER, Benjamin HAMPTON, John COOK and Frederick BARNS were sworn in - retired - returned and made the following presentments: On the recommendation of William CHAPLINE, Daniel CURD was sworn in as his deputy. Thomas STUART made motion allowing him to act as an Attorney at LAW in this court; took oaths. A deed from CROGHAN to AMOS & STEELE proven by the testimony of John BROOKS and Charles AMOS, certified. ROBERT COLEMAN allowed to practice law in the Court, took oaths. A case of James STUART vs William McFADIN dismissed; defendant came into court and said he did not believe the plaintiff to be a thief but instead an honest man. Defendant paid $10 for the cost of the case. Adjorned. Next week the Sept. 1797 session. Our speaker will be Nancy Baird, formerly of Western KY University. She will be speaking on "The Philistines Are Among Us" - the Civil War as seen through the eyes of a young lady. Nancy always puts on a wonderful program and is a favorite. She has authored a book previously and will be introducing her newest book. She is always willing to take questions and her personality and knowledge makes her a welcome return speaker. Then - the Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society in Bowling Green will be meeting 15 Sept at the Kentucky Museum on Western's campus. Bill Dow will talk about his mother's genealogy, "My Liles that fell through the cracks". If you have a story about your genealogy research, good or bad, you are welcome to share at the meeting. Plaintiff: Virginia B. DENHAM Defendant: William J DENHAM Date: 9 Nov 1899 File: 331 Virginia stated that they were married in Monroe Co in 189- (date not completed); lived as husband and wife until - date not filled in. He left her and ceased to live with her. She had behaved herself and was a faithful and dutiful wife - giving him no cause to leave. He had a settled aversion to her as to destroy her peace and happiness. He neglected her, abused her and was guilty of such acts to indicate an outrageous temper giving probable danger to her or great bodily harm. Both parties still lived in Monroe Co. She stated that he owned a horse, two calves, three hogs, 2 saddles, about 40 bushels of corn and about 400-500 binds of fodder and about 1,000 pounds of Pea Hay. Also household and kitchen furniture. (Note: $ amounts were not filled in). She had reason to believe that he would remove his property or sell to defeat her claim for alimony and maintenance. She asked for an attachment to be issued against him to prevent this. She prayed for a divorce and that her maiden name of Virginia B. Capshaw be returned to her. An injunction was issued against William of 9 Nov 1899 but - no resolution was found in the packet. Note: As I mentioned before, there was a standard wording used in divorce cases charging the other party - sometimes sounding really harsh but the attorney wanted to win the case for his client. I know that 1911 seems awfully current, but - it was over 100 years ago. In this year there were 805 recorded births in our county. Although many or most of these births can be found on-line, there are errors and I wanted to try to find out more information when I could. I checked the Barren Co marriages to see if the parents had married here; double checked spellings (and we all know about how names can be clobbered!), I looked at the 1920 census to see if the family was found, etc. Some were very illusive and out of the 805 births, 258 were not to be found. Either the name was entered incorrectly, I totally over-looked them or they just "disappeared!" For some time now, I'm going to save you hopefully a lot of searching. I'm taking this from my publication of the same name and hope the series will be of a help.
