I have been trying to find out something about him and his paintings. He roomed with me at the hotel in Mammouth Cave, Ky when we were young. He was a waiter at the hotel and I was a busboy. My father had him to do a picture for him, and I still have it . Can you give me any information about him and his pictures? He was older than me at that time. I do not know if he settled in Fountain Run or not. 3. Thank you, Sandi. I really enjoy reading court cases, etc. so I always read your postings. I knew that Bailey Anderson b13 Nov 1753 in Stafford county VA had resided in Warren County but not that his brothers, John and Vincent were there too. The Anderson brothers were from the Pendleton District of South Carolina where Bailey and John fought the British in the American Revolution. Their father, John, and three brothers, Scarlett, Selah, and Joshua were killed in one battle on the Savannah River near the Georgia border. After the war, the entire family left South Carolina, most migrated to Kentucky where John Anderson's widow, Sarah Carney Anderson, received bounty land. Later at least Bailey and Vincent traveled to Indiana and then down the Mississippi to Nacodoches, Texas Bailey was well educated, an attorney and often a legislator. This court case was the first time I knew that John Anderson Jr was with his brothers on their migration west. England Defendant: James G & T L England Date: 24 Apr 1891 File No. 153 C E England stated that she and James G England were married in Monroe Co about 18 yrs ago; they have since lived in the same county and are now citizens there. They set up to keeping house and to work to make a living; living together as man and wife for a number of years peaceably and happy. But she says her husband (defendant) became cross and fractious with her about 5 years past and for the last 12 months rendered her peace and happiness miserable. His conduct towards her was cruel and inhuman; settled aversion against her, etc. His conduct towards her is not justifiable or excusable on his part. She never gave him any offense or come to distrust her as his wife. She behaved herself but his conduct became such that he has compelled her to leave & abandon him on or about 14 Mar 1891. They had 3 children who she has with her and they look to her for maintenance & support, none because of their age unable to support themselves. She has but little property when she left him & her husband sold and disposed of it in order to prevent him from holding it. He is now trying to sell & dispose of the rest of their property to cheat & defraud her and the children. She charges that T. L. England who is her husband's brother has in his possession their milch cow, 7 yrs old and 2 yearling calves (described) to cheat her. She believes her husband is about ready to move out of KY and sell all the rest of the property unless prevented by the Court. She asks for the necessary orders to stop him and to obtain alimony. She prays for a divorce & alimony. Her attorneys were J. A. Scott and J. R. Leslie. The depositions begin. William Copass, Clerk's office of Monroe Circuit Court, 22 June 1891: 18 yrs old, resides Barren Co; farmer; knew the parties. Had been at the England's home while they were living together several times. Was there about the last of Jan or first of Feb 1891. She started to go to the meeting; he told her she wouldn't; she told him she wanted to go; he said if she went she would not stay with him any longer. She went to the meeting; he told her to get her things or if she didn't he would throw them outdoors and would thrash her. I and her son went on out into the woods a piece from the house but I'd left a 1/2 pint of medicine I'd forgotten & left at the house. I went back and the defendant swore that he was as good as his word. He showed me the bed and said when you overtake her again tell her to come back and get her things or he would stick the &*&*&* things in the stove and burn them up. When questioned Copass said that it was ill treatment. Why didn't he want her to go to the meeting? She had claimed sanctification - he said drop it or he would not live with her. Copass had never heard the defendant say he would kill her. They had 3 children; he supposed the mother has them. The parties had some property, a cow & 2 yearlings; some h hogs and some corn; kitchen and household furniture. What happened to the property? J. G. England said it was mortgaged to Tobe England - the T. L. England of this suit. Copass was cross-examined by the Defendant's attorney. He asked if anyone had talked to him about this case and he replied one of the Davis boys had asked him about the case. Mrs. Leslie was talking about it this morning. J. A. Scott, one of the plaintiff's attorneys and her brother, Uncle John Trevatt. Copass said that the plaintiff was his aunt. He was questioned again about the conduct of both parties, it looked like rain the night he was there. Defendant had told her that if she went to the meeting he would wear her out and if she went she wouldn't stay there with him any more. To be continued next week. 1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 6 OCT 2014 - PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin via
    3. A couple of things on a rainy Monday morning in Glasgow - Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week. Only about 2-3 of you got the correct answer to last week's puzzler; as I have said before, sometimes words change meanings over the years. Thanks for all who participated. Now, this week's puzzler will show the "old time" genealogists from the newer generation. It is easily googled and I'm sure many of you who have been chasing those illusive ancestors for many years will recognize this immediately. Give it a try! Lastly, as many of you know, I occasionally take some mini breaks where I shut the computer off and enjoy life. I'm going to take off my researching hat this Thursday through next Tuesday and enjoy autumn before the snows start flying. I will check my e-mail hit and miss but will get the super glue off my finger tips and pull away from the keyboard for a few days. I'll likely be ready to face the world again next Wednesday. Have a great day! 3. As noted, I attempted to fine further information on the parents - being successful some times, but at other times, could not track them down. I am sure someone on this list will be able to fill in more information. I don't know why fathers were not listed on the records of this time! If you find errors or additional information, you're more than welcome to post to the list! If no father is listed, I wasn't able to locate his name, it didn't normally indicate an unwed mother - they were just not shown in Barren Co on census records and I didn't find them elsewhere. 1. [SCKY] BARREN CO - PENSION APPLICATION AMBROSE S. CLAYTON CONTINUED
    2. Sandi Gorin via
    3. On May 30, 1914 the Commissioner wrote to John A. Murray of Glasgow asking him to investigate the property and/or income of Clayton because it was not "plain nor satisfactory." He noted that it was unusual that houses and lots in Glasgow are not worth over $200 each. (Refer back to a previous post where Clayton said he owned 8 homes but they were not worth more than the amount allowed to receive a pension). On July 27, 1921 the Commissioner wrote to Clayton. He stated that Clayton's voucher for the August payment has just been received and noted the post office address shown was in Shawnee, OK. The Commissioner reminded Clayton that according to the pension law of KY, if one is absent for a period of three months, one would be dropped from the rolls. However, it is provided that the pensioner remains away and his name is taken off the rolls, should he return to Kentucky and file an affidavit with the Department setting forth that he had returned to make this his permanent home, his name can be restored to the roll. The letter was addressed to A. S. Clayton, 212 N. Mkt St. On Nov 17, 1921 is found a letter from J. E. Clayton, Harlin-Clayton Co, Dry Goods, Clothing, Notions, Shoes, Hats, Furnishings, Carpets, Trunks, Etc. Glasgow, KY. It was addressed to the Hon. W. J. Stone, Frankfort, KY and stated: My dear Sir: - I enclose herewith my father's pending voucher which he wants to use(?). He is visiting his daughter & son in Oklahoma City and with deepest regret I have to tell you is very ___. I have heard him speak of you on many occasions and I hope I may have the pleasure of meeting you personally some day for all Confederate soldiers are certainly near? to me. With very best wishes. The final correspondence in the file is dated Nov 18, 1921 from the Commissioner to J. E. Clayton (the son). He acknowledges receipt of the above letter. He stated that on the 27th of July 1921 that he had notified Clayton that the law provides .... (the three month rule) and regrets to say that his father's name has been removed from the roll. A check for the amount due in November would be mailed to Clayton. These pension files are a wealth of information and it appears that one didn't dare move out of state for 3 or more months or they would be removed. Harsh regulations. I also note that the son was trying to "butter up" the Commissioner, likely in the hopes that his father would continue to receive his pension.
