    1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING 1 DEC 2014 - PUZZLER ETC.
    2. Sandi Gorin via
    3. What happened to November? Here we are in the last month of another year with a lot of posts made in 2014 so far. First, thank you to all of you who took a look at my used books and to those of you who found some interesting ones. You are the best. The list is still there, greatly shrunk! I am mailing books as I receive your notice. Secondly, just for you information. I recently came across a marvelous OLD book. Here's the write-up: An Address in Commeration of the First Settlement of Kentucky. Delivered at Boonesborough 25 May 1840 by Governor James T. Morehead. This is a most intriguing and thorough look at the founding of Kentucky that will take the reader from the struggles of our early heros as they began to explore that part of Virginia that became the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Unlike other historical accounts, Governor Morehead knew many of the people involved and tells of the early forts, the battles with the Native Americans, the women who came here, the skirmishes that resulted in so many deaths. Names familiar to Kentucky history appears - Boone, Clark, Hart, Shelby and hundreds more. The author transports the reader back in time so he can participate in the battles, the arguments with Virginia and then Statehood. Included is a wonderful index in which Morehead added in correspondence from some of the individuals whose names appear in the book or their descendants. These letters tell even more of the dangers, the deaths at the forts and the bravery of those so housed. A portion of George Rogers Clark's diary is included also in which he tells of more deaths and difficulties. Many of those who were killed - hero and settler alike, are named. Morehead was an eye witness to many events as he was seven years old when Kentucky gained Statehood. Since it was long out of copyright and a government publication, I have re-published this book - a photocopy of the original, not a typed version. I learned a lot about Kentucky and its early heroes. Thirdly - the puzzler is up. Not many of you were brave enough to tackle last week's puzzler and only about 3 got the correct answer. If you weren't aware of annual funerals of the past - you need to check out the answer and try this week's puzzler. Have a great week friends! 3. Don Burris on our list gave me a heads-up to a proposed change in census information that is requested. The link shown will take you to the site where you can read the full report and input your feelings. Basically, they are wanting to eliminate marital status (and other questions) from the forms to save money. Don stated: The Census Bureau it taking public comment on whether to remove marital information from census information. It goes without saying that future genealogical research will become more complicated with past census only reporting full family information on the long form (only 10% of the nation was provided the long form), and if future information does not include family status. Go to the following to make your voice heard. <http://www.populationassociation.org/2014/11/06/census-bureau-invites-public>http://www.populationassociation.org/2014/11/06/census-bureau-invites-public -comments-on-proposal-to-remove-marriage-and-field-of-degree-questions-on-th e-acs/ On the link provided above, there is a link to the individual who is taking comments from people. There is a deadline coming up soon when they will take comments. I don't mind some of the information being omitted (tho it's nice!), but the marital status IS important! Would you send an email nicely requesting that this information remain????? Here is what I wrote as an example - you can use much of the same wording except where I state "as a professional genealogist": Having read through the proposals to remove certain information from census questionnaires, I would like to request that one item not be removed: Marital status. As a historian and professional genealogist, this information is so important. We depend on that information in tracing our family trees and preserving family records. It is not used for any other purpose. Would you please consider leaving this question on future census forms?
