Samuel R. Smith served in the Spanish American War. Born Apr, 1871, died 12 Aug 1932. He resided in Barren Co., KY, removed to near Arcola, Douglas Co., IL, then to Vigo Co., IN, where he died. His grave is marked with a military marker. From records I located, it appears he must have enlisted in Douglas Co., IL. Son of Rev. Andrew Jackson "Uncle Jack" Smith (Methodist minister) and Elizabeth (Moulder) Smith. Married Lenola E. "Nola" Quigley, born Aug 1875, Barren Co., KY, died after Dec 1936, probably Vigo Co., IN, dau. of Wilson D. Quigley and Malinda C. (Arteburn) Quigley. My elderly aunt thinks Samuel also married Lenola's sister previously (unidentified), but she died quite young. His wife Lenola "Nola" may have returned to Kentucky, as one pension application indicates it was filed from that state. Children: infant son, Cecil, Brackie L., Hattie M., Oscar W., Emma DeLoris. One of our list members, Jan, asked about the Spanish Civil War (1930's) which wasn't on the list I sent out earlier. I told her this was one war with which I had no knowledge. So I went to Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Civil_War which gives a pretty thorough write-up. Now, did any Kentuckians get involved? I can't yet find. I know Americans did fight in this war which is often confused with the Spanish-American war. If I find anything, I will post to the list. I am researching the Glazebrook Family that left Virginia around 1800 and moved to Lincoln County. Some of the family moved to Barren County. I am having trouble sorting out the different generations as each generations have sons with the same names. This is a work in progress and I am not sure how accurate it is. I welcome any information and corrections. Julius Ceasar Glazebrook (1712-1782) had, I think, 8 children, William, Mary, James, Elizabeth, John, Catherine, Julius and Richard. After James' death in Lincoln County some of his family came to Barren County. His son John married Frances Elmore. John and Frances' daughter Mary married William Monroe. Another son of James, William, married Mary "Polly" White. Both John and William's family lived in Barren County. I am interested in any information on Julius Ceasar Glazebrook (1712-1782), his wife and his children. Specifically I interested in his sons Julius and Richard. Is this son the Julius (1752-1847) who served in the Revolutionary War and is buried in Putnam County Indiana? Or is this Julius (1752-1847) a grandson of Julius Ceasar (1712-1782)? My other specific question is who is the wife of Richard s/o Julius Ceasar (1712-1782)? Is it Catherine Winn Snead? There are several Richard Glazebrooks and I can't determine which Richard she married. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Margaret
I just came across this and thought it might help a little. We are always looking for military service records and sometimes it's difficult to figure out which war an ancestor fought in. Most of these are quite obvious but, just in case! Now there will be variations. Some men served when they were very young (underage even), and some men served past the age when you would think they didn't serve. Some served in various Indian wars which is not included here. This is just a general rule. If the ancestor's birth year was: 1726-1767 - Revolutionary War (1775-1783) 1762-1799 - War of 1812 (1812-1815) 1811-1848 - Civil War (1861-1865) 1848-1881 - Spanish American War (1898) 1849-1885 - Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) 1872-1900 - World War I (1917-1918) 1877-1925 - World War II (1941-1945) 1900-1936 - Korean War (1950-1953) 1914-1955 - Vietnam War (1964-1972) Remember, some men could have served in more than one war - such as WWI, Korea and Viet Nam as an example. I appreciate very much your feed back on the puzzlers. I am trying to continue with them and was questioned as to why I could consider discontinuing them. It got me to thinking. My main purpose always for the rootsweb lists I manage is to (1) help you find your ancestor and (2) teach you a little more about how it was - how it was done - what it means. As a list "mom" as we are sometimes called (or list "dad") we are not required to post anything. Many, many of the lists exist only, infrequently, with queries that are posted - the list manager just monitors. We aren't required to answer queries or put out any information. I have run these two lists differently from the beginning. I try to share what I have to help those who may never be able to come here and do their own research. So I took a look back. This is NOT to pat myself on my back but may answer the question of what I do with my time on these lists! I try to have a life outside of the computer once in awhile - but you know I don't take many breaks. I am normally on the computer 12 hours a day either working on a new book or answering queries or posting. You know that I answer your e-mails. I was shocked myself. I have been managing lists since 1994 - before rootsweb; as many of you know there were two other "groups" that ran these lists before roots web. That's 21 years. Figuring about 50 out of 52 weeks a year I'm posting data, normally 5 days a week between all the lists. To date I have posted: KYBiographies - 12,257 KYResearch - 1,119 Legends & Memories - 100 (estimated) South Central KY and KYBarren - 5,250 Queries I answer on an average of 10 a day - 10,500 (more after I post the puzzler) That brings a rough total of 29,226 posts I've made in those 21 years. Plus I contribute information to the Barren County website, and in the past contributed obituaries for Monroe, Metcalfe and Hart County (no count known). I have been told that there are more than 60,000 posts I've made over the years - the rest - scattered all over the place! This is why, occasionally, I ask about the benefit of the puzzlers. I love doing them. I know many of you just read and wait for the answer. That's ok but I hope that more of you will take a chance and guess. Again, this is not a complaint or a pat on the back. I love what I do and I try to squeeze in some "Sandi time" here and there. I share because I want to share and others have shared with me over the years. I love these lists ... there will come a time when I will have to cut back on my posting. But, I just wanted to let you know what I do and why I get tired once in awhile! :-) Please don't take this as a criticism - I'm glad you're all here! The next session was held on Tuesday, 4 June 1799 with Burwell JACKSON and John SHANNON, Justices, present. Ninian EDWARDS produced a license from the District Judge of the state and he was granted to practice as a attorney at law. He took the oath; had already taken the oath of the Constitution of the United States and of the State. John SNODGRASS, foreman; Benjamin HAMPTON, Geo A SUGG, Samuel WHITESIDES, William HARRIS, Robert KING, Robert STEWART, Thomas CLERK (CLARK), Armoid? BARTLETT, Thomas FLETCHER, David SMITH, William BARNS, Charles ROLLINS, Saml McFADIN, William HILL and Alvaton CHISM were sworn a Grand Jury and retired. After some time they returned and made the following presentments: Samuel GARBO is a vagrant Joseph LAWRENCE a true bill upon an attachment. Commonwealth vs: DOWNAN (DONAN) - dismissed on motion of the defendant. COOK - SAME FRANKLIN vs BARNS - Dismissed at defendant's cost. Ordered that Gladin GORIN, Justice of the Peace for Warren Co issue a warrant to apprehend Saml. GARBO for vagrancy. Court adjourned until tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. TRUE BILL: A term endorsed on an indictment to indicate that a majority of <http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Grand+Jury>Grand Jury members found that the evidence presented to them was adequate to justify a prosecution. ATTACHMENT: Attachment in legal terminology means a preliminary legal seizure of property to force compliance with a decision which may be obtained in a pending suit. Before a final judgment is issued, the court may order the sheriff or other proper officer to seize any property; credit, or right, belonging to the defendant, in whatever hands the same may be found, to satisfy the claim which the plaintiff has against him. In some states, an order of attachment can only be issued when a debtor is shown to be fleeing or concealing themselves from the legal process, so that the attached property can satisfy a judgment that may be awarded in the complainant's favor. In criminal law practice, it may refer to a writ requiring a sheriff to apprehend a particular person, who has been guilty of a contempt of court, and to bring the offender before the court. Continuing our look at the duel in which Frank Laswell shot and killed George Seaver in a duel in the middle of Glasgow. A P CHILDRESS was Chairman of the Grand Jury. Witnesses were called and included the following: V L PORTER, Will COLLINS, Henry TAYLOR, U PAGE, C T CHEEK, S LEECH (likely of Leech Drug Store on the square), Jos M RICHEY, C A HAMLETT, A(dolph) RAPP (he was a well-known photographer and had his studio on the square), Tom LEECH, N R PEDIGO, Tom CARTER, Ed WILLIAMS, Prof. ELROD, Mrs. ELROD, Cy MURPHY and another Murphy whose first name could be deciphered. There were a lot of witnesses it appears! On 14 April 1887 summons were issued to: W H PACE, Dr. S T PURCELL, W A McQUOWN (he made a lot of the coffins during this time frame), J A MURRAY (this was "Old Reb"), J P NUCKOLS, George STAUB, J F PRICE, J C EVANS, Dr. B F TRABUE, John SMITH, John RITTER, M T PEDIGO, E(manuel) MORRIS, H M PEDIGO, Jas HARTWELL(?), L W CARDAN (Carden), J T WOOTEN, Henry COMBS, Howell BEVILL. Likely the doctors called had treated Seaver and did an autopsy of sorts). An undated summons was issued to the Sheriff of Hart Co for Priest CARPENTER of "near Clear Point." Likely we was in town that day. On 21 Sept 1887 the Sheriff was ordered to bring in Isham LIVELY (black), John SMITH (the carpenter), Ben MYERS, W J BRADFORD, M DINKELSPIEL (business on the square), W W FRANKLIN, David LESSENBERRY, Phil BYBEE, Peter HARRIS, Chas CHILDRESS, Jno REDDING, W F REDDING, W H PEDIGO, Chris DEPP, Geo. You know I don't normally post to the lists on Friday, but Don Burris of our list sent me an interesting email which listed the International List of Causes of Death in 1900. This is international, not just KY. But many have wondered over the years what the major causes of death were in the past. Wouldn't it be neat to have this list for KY in the 1800's? Anyway, I thought it most interesting and thought for a couple of Friday's I would post it to the list with my thanks to Don for finding this. Some of these diseases I'll have to look up to figure out what they are! 1 - Small-pox among those vaccinated 2 - Same - among unvaccinated 3 - Same - unknown if vacinnated or not 4 - Cow-pox and other effects of vaccination (found in cows and rodents, transferred to humans by handling the udders of an infected cow, etc.) 5 - Chicken-pox 6 - Measles 7 - German measles 8 - Scarlet fever 9 - Typhus 10 - Plague 11 - Relapsing fever (comes from the bites of ticks and lice) 12 - Influenza 13 - Whooping cough 14 - Mumps 15 - Diptheria 16 - Cerebro-spinal fever (infection of the brain and spinal cord) 17 - Pyrexia of unknown origin (above normal fever) 18 - Enteric fever (known also as typhoid fever) 19 - Asiatic cholera 20 - Diarrhea due to food 21 - Infective enteris (inflammation of small intestine) 22 - Diarrhea not defined 23 - Dystentery 24 - Tetanus 25 - Malaria 26 - Rabies 27 - Glanders (infectious disease of the glands, found primarily in animals but transferrable to humans) 28 - Anthrax 29 - Syphilis 30 - Gonorrhea 31 - Phlegmasia alba dolens (also called milk leg, deep vein thrombosis, found in new mothers) 32 - Puerperal septicaemia/intoxication (infection found in new mothers) 33 - Puerperal pyaemia (It is usually caused by the <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staphylococcus>staphylococcus bacteria by pus-forming organisms in the blood. Apart from the distinctive abscesses, pyaemia exhibits the same symptoms as other forms of septicaemia. It was almost universally fatal before the introduction of <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibiotics>antibiotics (Wikipedia) 34 - Puerperal fever not defined 35. Infective endocarditis (inflammation of the tissues of the heart) To be continued - Sandi Colonel Sandi Gorin President, South Central KY Historical & Genealogical Society Sandi's website: http://www.gensoup.org/gorin/index.html Sandi's puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com
