Are there any Payne researchers out there who would claim this bank robber? He likely belongs to my line, but I'm missing a few details to connect him positively. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows this bank robber's parents. Thank you. Sherry Sandi Gorin wrote: >Washington Post, 17 July 1937. > >"Ky. Back in 2001 as you can see from the subject line, I posted names from various Allen Co schools. There was an error (thankfully not mine this time!) on a name from the Oliver School. Betty Jo Boyter below contacted me after finding the post and noted that the name of Alma Shores Willingham is not correct. Alma Shores married Roy Perry; her mother, Velma Mae Shores married Phineas Ira Willingham. I wanted this to get into the archives! Ok gang, bear with me! I needed to run down to the Cultural Center this morning and while there, I went up on the 2nd floor to view the General Store I mentioned yesterday. I took me awhile to get to it; I had a lot of displays to see along the way - the military displays, the one-room school house, the funeral parlor, the doctor's office, the bank, the kitchen (which dated me - I remember a lot of the things there!) ... and finally I worked my way back to the General Store which one can walk through. It is fabulous, down to an authentic ledger book, supplies, toys, counters ... I felt I could walk back in time. I told Gayle Berry, Director, if they would let me watch one tv program a day, sneak me in a microwave oven, I could literally move in! In talking to Gayle we were discussing that this museum operates at no charge to the public, depending on donations made at the front desk. Most everything in the museum has been donated and reflects various periods of history of south central KY. They are always in need of and looking for things to add to their displays. Gayle graciously gave me a list of some of the things they would like to find. If you have anything on this list or something you'd be willing to donate, I know the museum would be grateful. You can call Gayle at 1-888-256-6941 (locally 270-651-9792); fax her at 270-651-2806 or send her an email at sckculturalcenter@glasgow-ky.com. Here's what they are looking for: Cider barrel, boot jack, reel to wind or measure yarn, old sampler, wooden wash tub, metal signs for a general store (before 1940), ink well and staff pin for bank, nice oil lamp for the Victorian room, calendar for bank (early 1900's), picture of the Caverna Grill, picture of Star or Twin City Drive in, old gas pump for service station with glass top, old cartridge boxes for 12 gauge shot gun and .22 rifle, coal grate for fire place, fire place tools, forged shovel to remove ashes from stove for the schoolhouse, 30, 40 and 50's small household appliances, music box from the early 1900's, cave memorabilia for Crystal Onyx, Sand Cave and Diamond Caverns), items from funeral homes such as fans, colanders, programs, memorial books. While there, I browsed for a few in the genealogy room where there are the holdings of our historical society and the cultural center. Mary, a wonderful volunteer there, said they are receiving more family books and files for the vertical files; the genealogy room is busting at the seams! The genealogy books belonging to the society and my books which were in the public library are there and new covers, replacement pages etc made due to the heavy wear and tear they had experienced. There's a big table in this room and a copy machine ... one can spend hours researching happily away while the family, maybe not as interested in family tree shaking, can take a tour of the museum. I just had to give a few plugs to the cultural center, museum and the people there; this is something that we are very proud of; it is professionally done, located just off the square, free parking and convenient to many eating spots. But it's the warmth of the people who work and volunteer here that make it so special to us. Maybe your next trip to Glasgow will allow time to stop by and say hello! I am not connected with the cultural center ... but, as I said, I'd be most happy to take up residence there! Washington Post, 17 July 1937. "Ky. Bank Robber Seized by G-Men On Indiana Farm. "Reuben PAYNE, 29, gunman who robbed a bank at Summer Shade, Ky., June 29 and escaped after a gun battle with local police, was captured by Federal agents yesterday on a farm belonging to his step-father 5 miles from Delpha, Ind., it was announced by the federal bureau of Investigation. He was en-route to Louisville, Ky., last night for arraignment before a United States commissioner. "Payne entered the Summer Shade bank alone, armed with two .38-caliber revolvers, and took cash totaling $500. On leaving the bank he ran into police officers, emptied both revolvers at them and escaped into the woods. Payne's two companions, Elmore Huntley and Fred Perkins, were waiting in a car, but were captured. "Search for Payne was taken up by Federal agents and led to his discovery at the farm. Agents from the Indianapolis office of the F.B.I. raided the residence late yesterday afternoon and took Payne without a shot. Payne was unarmed. "Payne served two terms in the Kentucky State Reformatory. "Perkins and Hunley are being held at the Louisville jail in $25,000 bond, harged with bank robbery and conspiracy to rob the Summer Shade bank." No information was given as to where Payne resided. Linn, VA has a system of independent cities. The incorporated cities are not in a county. I don't know if it is true of all the cities in VA, but it is with most of them. Richmond is an independent city, not in any county. When the city grows and incorporates its suburbs into the city by annexation, the land is transferred from the county to the city. Colonial Heights and Petersburg south of Richmond are also independent cities. I think the system existed in 1782 since it is in the VA constitution. Years ago, as a college student I worked in Chesterifeld Co. in the summer and observed that Righmond is an independent city. This is not true of towns. BTW, it does not work the opposite way, land from a city never goes back to a county by annexation... Best I can tell, all three counties existed at the time Richmond was incorporated in 1782. It seems that the center of Richmond and the state capitol is in Henrico county but is also right near the intersection of the three counties. So the rootsweb information seems to be correct. It was in all three counties. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linne Gravestock" <linne@gravestock.name> To: <SOUTH-CENTRAL-KENTUCKY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 1:30 AM Subject: [SCKY] Richmond, VA census (Bowles family) Can anyone tell me what county Richmond, VA was in in 1782? Hi Omigene! Many "thank yous" for the information on Belle and Hise Gearlds. I did some looking around in censuses and found them in both 1910 and 1920 Monroe, Center Point on the Elbow Rd. In 1900 Monroe I found a Hice Gearlds, age 22, living at John F. and Lucie Coe's place working as a "workhand". BUT, there is also a 1900 entry in Center Point for Mary FitzGearls, age 69, widow, mo-in-law Hice " age 22, single, bro-in-law, day labor These two folks are living with Corro (?), Thomas, HOH and Lucie A., age 26, wife and their children. All of them were b. KY-KY-KY. Back in 1880 there is a J. R. Fitzgerald and wife, Elizabeth with 8 children, including the youngest, Hice, age 4. He was the only Hice/Hise I could find in 1880 Monroe Co. so I want to believe that it's the right family. I've been a little mystified for some time when I'd run across Fitzgeralds, Geralds, Gearlds, etc. and other variations of the name who all looked to be the same family. I've seen a lot of name changes in my short time at this, but I'd love to know how you drop an entire syllable, especially one at the beginning of the name! <G> If anyone out there knows whether the above census information is the Hise that married Belle Head, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I suppose it's also possible that Hise was enumerated twice.........it's happened before.
I have been saving the guardian bonds each week. PACE THROUGH PECK was sent out January 1 and I don't have any more until today. Sharon clarksha@swbell.net

Did anyone receive the guardian bonds between the names of PECK and PRICE which would have been posted on January 9? I did not & they are not in the archives. I emailed Sandi & she said she knows she typed them & marked off she had sent them. Did the bit god in the sky eat them? If any of you received the January 9th guardian bonds post would you please send to the list? It would be much appreciated. Thanks...lyn
I need to get this into the records. Many years ago, I posted from a typed list I was provided, the marriages of Edmonson Co KY. I didn't have access to the originals and was informed that there is an error. I'll be sending this to the fellow who runs the Edmonson Co website too. John Pendleton King, the senator from Georgia, was the son of John King and Nancy Brandon of Bedford County, Tennessee. This family did live in Barren County until 1807, when they moved to Bedford County. This family should not be confused with my John King, who did not arrive in Barren County until 1817. See my website at http://azstrong.tripod.com/harry_alice/legacy/1124.htm, particularly the Research Note. It does appear, however, that some from this other King line (or descendants through one of his brothers who also appear in the early tax lists), did return to Barren County in the 1820s. If you are a King descendant from Barren County and can't connect with the descendants of my John King, I expect you descend from the line that went to Bedford County. Robert Strong
There was a wonderful write-up in the Glasgow Daily Times yesterday on the South Central Ky Cultural Center whom many of you have visited for your researching and to see the museum. The next time you come to Glasgow, please take time to stop in whether you've been there before or not! New genealogical resources are always being added and the museum now has an entire general store, the topic of the news article. The general store is complete with articles from the Quigley General Store in Goodnight, KY, shelves from the library at the old Glasgow High School on the Liberty Street campus, soap, pots and pans, dishes, a checkerboard game for the loafers, hard carndy in those old- time jars, old tins, scales, harnesses, and many other items. Some of the display also came from the Red Lick Store in Metcalfe Co which closed in the 1940's. I hope to run down there this week to see the display .. the photo is most intriguing. Congratulations need to be given to the many donors (they are always looking for donations of old equipment, supplies, etc for all of the displays); and to Gayle Berry (director), Kay Harbison (retired Metcalfe school teacher and chairman of the exhibit committee). Also to all the volunteers who donate their time daily to help us all in our researching, manning the phones, and assisting where needed. The museum also houses an airplane hanging in the foyer, a funeral parlor, an authentic log cabin, a gristmill, blacksmith shop, military displays - and so much more. There will also be a showing in the Christine Snavely art gallery beginning Feb 16th, with art from the "other Glasgow's" - Glasgow, MT and Glasgow Scotland. Pieces done by artists here will be on display in the other Glasgow's also. The museum and the recently renovated Plaza Theater in Glasgow will have a kick-off on the 16th of Feb at 7 pm with a performance by Dr Ed Smith of Georgetown College on Adolph Rupp, the Coach, and on Thurday, 11 Apr, 7 pm at the Cultural center by James Pritchard speaking on Jessie James, Fact and Folk Lore. The Cultural Center is located at 200 Water Street in Glasgow; their website is: http://www.cityofglasgow.org/sckcc/ which shows driving directions, email address, hours of operation, etc. Next: Charlie has posted the puzzler for this week and the answer to last week's puzzler on line. Click on the URL in my signature line called gen-soup and give it a try. This one might be very easy, or very tricky! I would like to thank Charlie for providing this space for me! In a few weeks, at the conclusion of the series of guardian bond postings on the lists, I will be starting a new series which will be a walk around Glasgow in its earliest days. Prepared by Ken Beard of our historical society, I will be tracking each of the original lots in Glasgow and the "out lots" tracing their owners as the lots were purchased and sold. I think this will be interesting and I will be starting with the forming of Glasgow and building for quite a few years. I had done this earlier in one of my publications and Ken expanded on it by researching the deed books and order books of the city and computer plotting the lots. Finally, my daughter was home this weekend and checked out by my doctor. He could find nothing seriously wrong with her after her auto accident - the black eye and the aches and pains will pass. Thanks for your emails of concern! See you tomorrow with Monroe Co tidbits from the old newspapers.
