    1. A NOTE ABOUT BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. For some of the new listers, a note here about the vital statistics such as I am posting right now. >From 1852-1910, KY allowed and recorded the births and deaths (and marriages) in the existing counties. But the years covered were random. Many years were not recorded, and I have been told that the KY Legislature (and other states followed the same pattern) felt that there was no need to record all these. And, I imagine that some years have been lost. The information was recorded in the large ledger books at the County Clerk's office. These books do not exist in the various counties but have been microfilmed. Birth records normally showed the name of the child (if named yet), color, sex, status (living or dead), name of parents (or slave owner), place of birth of parents. Death records normally showed the name of the individual, place of birth, place of residence, place of death, cause of death if known, sometimes occupation, name of parents if known, their place of birth if known, cause of death and date of death. Were there errors in the records? Oh yes! The doctors or midwives were to keep track of all the births and deaths they had attended that year and return these records to the County Clerk's office yearly. They were written normally on little scraps of paper, some of which I've seen. The handwriting could be atrocious then as now. If the doctor did not keep good records, wrote poorly, or didn't even know the names of those he attended, names and facts could be incorrect. Thankfully most kept good records. In one case where I was transcribing, the doctor must not have dated the event and his report showed that everyone was born or died on the 1st or the 15th! At times the physcian/midwife was not in attendance at the death and took the family word as to the cause of death or even the date of death. It was not as scientific as it is today and several diseases had the same symptoms. During the cholera epidemic in Barren Co in 1854, most deaths were coded as cholera, but other doctor's showed it as dysentary, summer cholera or other diseases with the same symptoms. The vital statistics are a wonderful tool for the genealogist tho hard to read in many instances from the microfilm. The clerk had to interpret the doctor's handwriting and if he didn't know the family, he could make mistakes also. Then, 200 years later or so, we try to interpret the Clerk's writing ... a lot of chances for errors! One English born clerk in Barren Co showed all the James as Jeames, the Henry's as Henri's, the Smiths as Smythes, etc. Comments were also written in by the clerk on some entries which today are hysterical - normally regarding the births. They had no idea that we would be looking at their comments later. I hope this helps a tad. Each year was recorded separately, and names listed by the first initial of the last name. All the births are together, then the deaths, then the marriages. Normally the I's and J's were recorded together as they were written the same. Sometimes a name was put on the wrong page and you will find a Jones at the end of the S page, etc. Some microfilm is unreadable - dark. Sometimes the clerk got off a line in the ledger book and got the wrong person with the wrong parents. But the majority are as accurate as we can ascertain - looking at it many years later. 1. Green, Farmer, and Murley families
    2. Joni Vella
    3. _____ I am still searching for information regarding the following families in Cumberland and Monroe counties. Robert Green and wife Elizabeth. Robert was born between 1766 and 1775, He was in Cumberland County by 1810, probably by 1805. Robert may have been married prior to Elizabeth, but this is only speculation on my part due to the ages of the children on the census in 1810 and 1820. Four of them appear too old to be Elizabeth's who was born around 1790. I was able to find the name Elizabeth in a deed book extract (thanks Sandi!) from 1819. I have a list of names for children who appear to be theirs, namely my ggggrandfather, Robert Robinson Green, born August 10, 1811 at Kettle Creek, Cumberland County. In 1820, the family appears on the Monroe County census. If what I have pieced together is correct, they went to Sangamon County, Illinois about 1821-1822. Robert Green appears to have died about 1826-1828, the rest of the family is in southwestern Wisconsin by 1830, where Elizabeth remarried. Although some of this needs further documentation, there is quite a bit of evidence to back everything up. Questions: What is Elizabeth's maiden name? When and where were Robert and Elizabeth married? Was Robert married previous to Elizabeth, and if so, to whom? Names of children? Benjamin Farmer and family. They show up near Robert Green in both the 1810 and 1820 censuses. Benjamin supposedly married four times and had 24 kids. His family also went to Sangamon County, Illinois about the same time as the Greens. At least some of them did! Also, some Farmers end up in the same area of Wisconsin at the same time as the Greens. Robert Robinson Green's first wife was Cinderella (Sinderila) Farmer, they were married in Wisconsin in 1834. She died in 1846, and unfortunately none of thier children lived to produce offspring. Robert Robinson Green remarried and all eight children from the second marriage produced numerous descendants! Benjamin Farmer's name appears on at least one land record I have for Robert Green in Cumnberland County, but I can't remember in what capacity. I still haven't figured out the land grant system!! Questions: Names of wives and children of Benjamin and their spouses would be helpful. Particularly anything that might tie them to the Greens. William Murley and his second wife, Jane Green. Again, neighbors of Robert and Elizabeth Green. Same census pattern--1810 Cumberland and 1820 Monroe. Robert Green is mentioned on one of William's land records, I am not sure now if it was as a neighbor or a chain carrier. If I calculated correctly, Jane would have been born between 1775 and 1784, making her an age to possibly be a sister to Robert. Question: Did William and Jane have any children together? If so, what are their names? Any specific information about Jane; her birthdate and place, death information, etc. Does she have any siblings? I realize this is long, and I posed a lot of questions. I do not expext anyone to have all of the answers, nor to I expect to find all of the answers with just this one message. I am hoping for some tidbit to point me in the right direction with my research. Thank you, Joni Vella Cudahy, Wisconsin

Court adjourned. /s/ Gladin GORIN. To be continued. Just a thought here. If we stop and think - these men met 206 years ago and yet when we work on our family genealogy, they are as alive and real to us as if they were still working away.. They worked hard to manage the county affairs that formed the basis of current day Warren Co (or any county). They worried about settling on the wrong lands, laying out the roads (many of which are now the major streets we zoom along daily); they taught the bound children skills like farming which skills are still in use .... makes one stop and think doesn't it? 3. If Brenda Fitzgerald is out there, I'd like to communicate with her re the multiple GRACE and HEAD marriages over the past few hundred years. I wrote to her at an old Rootsweb address and it came back to me. Hopefully, she's still active and in the Glasgow area. For that matter, if there's anyone on the list that has knowledge of these families, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you! Thanks.

    3. Due to a dandy snow, our town is quiet this morning and at present, my server is down. It is up for a moment and then goes back down. So - for whenever you receive this! I am starting a series on the earliest settlers of Glasgow based on the original deed books. I am going to attempt to see if the webmaster of the Barren Co board can upload a plat map of Glasgow which was drawn in 1799 by John Gorin. (Will take awhile). Shown in the next series of posts will be shown the lot number, the grantee, the price paid, date of purchase, book and page # where recorded. This list was compiled by Ken Beard of our historical society and from my transcriptions of the deed books. In a few instances, there is no deed book reference. If more than one entry is shown for a lot, this is a sale of the lot from the original owner. This land was from a land grant to John Scott who served as a Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of Light Dragoons from August 10, 1780, to November, 1782. The grant issued on February 24, 1784 for 2,666 2/3 acres and surveyed December 15, 1785 by George Rogers Clark. Order Book #1, p. 29. January 1800 - John Gorin, first mayor in said court came into court and took the oath to the United States, the oath to the State of Kentucky, and the oath of office which is ordered to be certified. The town of Glasgow was divided into two sections. The Lots within the Towns border were equal in length and width (blocks 300' by 300', lots 150' by 150' based on the scale and the call along Front Street) with streets on each side (35' wide). The "in" lots number 1 through 110. The "Outlots" were irregular without street access. The out lots numbered 1 through 17. The survey of the town's establishment begins near the corner of Liberty and Front Street at Lot #1 and runs East along Front Street to Out Lot #1. From Out Lot #1 (crosses the Burkesville Road US 90) to a corner between Out Lots #6 and #10. From 6 & 10 to the South corner of Out Lot #17, crossing the South Fork of Beaver Creek in lot #13. It continues along the East side of the creek, crossing the Temple Hill Road at the junction of the spring branch to a point approximately 700' South of the road (US63). From this point, a straight line to a point near the corner of Race and Washington Street. Along Washington Street to Liberty Street. Along Liberty Street to the Beginning. "At a meeting of the trustees at the Bank of Green River on the 20th Feb 1819. Present: Joseph Winlocke, Pres., Charles Harvey, J. R. Underwood. It was satisfactorily proved to the board by the testimony of John McFerran that the original establishment of the town of Glasgow, John Gorin gave to the county of Barren 150 acres of land for the purpose of establishing a town and two acres in addition for the public square, the said 150 acres to be laid off into in and out lots and to be sold for the benefit of said Gorin and the count of Barren (said Gorin having a right reserved to select first choice of Lots) said orin made selection of the corner lot above the spring on which the family lived which he took at $79.00 being the price of the highest lot sold at auction. It is therefore considered by the Board that said Gorin is entitled to the legal title to said lot 31 and that this Board will execute a deed for said lot to said Gorin when the same is properly prepared and presented. Adjourned: Jas. Winlocke. Lot #31 is at the corner of the square at the intersection of Green Street and Washington St where the Barren Co Progress office is now located. John and Florintha are buried in the White Cemetery near Moss, TN. Other children shown in that census were Asberry, Jordan, Nancy, Mary, Elizabeth, Amanda, and Sarah. A son, J.
