    1. IN CLOSING THURSDAY, 9 MAR 2006
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. An extra note to finish out my week of posting ... What happened to all my puzzler guessers? I have only received 3 guesses and no one has really pegged the answer yet. I think all of us have spring fever tho it's still officially winter! Give it a try. Many have asked about my eye. It is still giving me a lot of trouble and I am not seeing well yet. Treatment continues after the 2nd appt and there appears to be some positive progress. It is hard for me to focus for any length of time so if I let a typo get thru, I do apologize. I try to be careful on names and dates!! I trust you all have a neat weekend, watch out for the storms in the Ohio valley area (us!) and hope all your Arizonians get some rain! I'll be back for my regular posts on Monday again. 3. Mrs. Leann PALMORE, 88, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Tom WHITE, last Friday. Had been in failing health for some time, confined to bed one week. Her husband was T J (Jeff) PALMORE who died in 1913. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. WHITE and Mrs Nellie KEITH of Ocala FL. Sons are Dr Ewing and Reneau PALMORE of Glasgow and E C of Louisville. Member of Church of Christ since age 15, possessed a true Christian character. "She lived every day as if it were to be her last on earth" stated her nephew, Elder "Dick" PALMORE at the services. Burial was at Pleasant Hill. Miss Mable CLEMMONS, member of last year's graduating class married Mr. Benton BIRCH of Persimon, Sunday, Dec 29, 1940. They will make their home in Hoopston IL where he is farming. (Gamaliel). Since the birthday of Robert E LEE falls on Sunday this year, the 19th, the banks will observe it by being closed on Monday. {does anyone remember his birthday being a holiday - I don't!} Bridal shower given by Mrs. KIRKPATRICK in honor of Mrs Jenks HAIDEN BRITT nee Madaline SWANN, 11 Jan. Misses Sue Pearl CRABTREE, Irene and Katherine GRIDER received the gifts at the door with dainty opened parasols ... contest was won by Mrs B O JACKSON. Misses Nell RODDY and Mary Letta PINCKLEY and Louise WHITE presided at the punch bowl; grandfather and uncle of the bride were Rev J H SWANN and Prof Winburn SWAN. Heirloom of theirs presented and paper read explaining them read by Mrs Escoe WOOD. (they were 100 round "nappies" or glass sauces 100 years old). Explained that the heirloom had been haded down thru 6 generations, originating in NC in the Alfred GIBBS family who later settled a section of land of 640 actres at the Gibbs Cross Roads near Carthage TN. It is the famous "Button and Daisy" pattern in shades of heavenly blues, crystal, amber, canary and vaseline, made at an early glass house in Wheeling WV. Have been used 100 yrs with no nicks or breaks. Marriage law change cuts marriages to one. A new law requiring a medical examination of applicants for marriage licenses causing weddings to be rare - only one license in Monroe Co. Glasgow is the closest place for testing the blood of applicants so a local doctor has to take the blood and send it to Glasgow. The Glasgow lab only open on Tues and Thurs, so a long wait - this eliminating run away marriages. If couple violates the law, there is a $1,000 fine. If an applicant is refused a marriage license by reason of failure to obtain the blood test and certificate, he may file a protest with the County Judge. Trials will be held in chambres with all information, reports and evidence kept from the public. Appeals can be taken to the State Health Commissioner. Interesting articles! To be continued with another issue next week. 1. Turners and Bryants
    2. Ann M. Small
    3. I would love some help if anyone can help. My 3rd great grandmother was Susan Turner. Susan married W. Jonas Bryant b. March 3, 1837, TN. First I would like to know when they were married - it should be in the early 1860s and I believe it will be in Monroe County, Kentucky. Susan and Jonas had only 2 children as far as I know. One was Sarah Elizabeth Bryant and the other was Lucy Bryant. Susan is said to have died in childbirth in 1868 so I have presumed this was during the birth of Lucy since Sarah Elizabeth was born September 24, 1865. Second, I would like to know who are the parents of Susan and Jonas. I know that Jonas had a sister named Marilda. I think he also had siblings: David, Lucy, R.G., Sivey, Sanford R., Dorothy G., Andrew J., Pomeroy, and Wilmoth H. I would love to have sources for this information, but I have not been able to find any so far. I know nothing about Susan. I found one family in the 1850 Census Monroe County Census with a Susan listed, but there are several names with the initial S. There are no Susans listed in the 1860 Monroe County, Kentucky Census. Today, in the 1880 census, I found the following which is interesting because it repeats all the family names I know: Sarah E., Susan, and Lucy. Perhaps Robert is Susan Turner’s brother. He would be about the right age to be her brother, but I think it would mean that F.N. Turner is not her father. 1880 United States Census Household: Name Relation Marital Gender Race Age BP Occup FBP MBP Rob. J. Turner and above in the 1860 Census we have Roda E. Turner close to the same age. Notice the age of the adults in the 1880 Census correspond to the ages above in the 1850 census. Can anyone help with either of these families? Does anyone have sources available to them at home that they might be willing to do lookups? I could be so easily pursuing the wrong families. there sure are a lot of Turners in Monroe County, Kentucky. Thanks. Ann

    1. IN CLOSING THURSDAY, 2 MAR 2006
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Just a note that I am going to be off the computer a lot for the next few days. I won't be answering much email ... I picked up a dandy viral infection in my right eye and am not seeing very clearly. I'm on a prednesone based eye drop to try to clear it up and yesterday it felt better; today, back in pain and bleary vision. I have another appt next Tuesday morning and hopefully by then everything will be cleared up; I'm pending possible surgery on my right eye but nothing can be done until this infection is under control. Since my eye hurts a lot, I'm going to try to rest my eyes as much as possible for a few days to hurry the healing along! Hopefully by Monday it will be ok and I'll make my regular posts; then Tuesday before my appt. Then ... we'll see what happens. Keep searching for those illusive ancestors while I'm resting!!! 1. Vital Records
    2. Larue County does still have the big ledger book at their courthouse. The last time I was there, it was located in the room with the marriage records. It is, like the others, somewhat unreliable. My great grandfather is listed as a girl named "Eliza," and both my grandmothers' birth dates are listed under two different years. Still, it is a great place to start. The microfilm copy of the Larue Co. vital stats that the Louisville Free Public Library has, differs from this ledger, as not as many years are covered in the microfilm. Also, to add even more confusion, the microfilm copy that the Filson Club has, is different from those two. From what I have seen, the microfilm copy at the Archives in Frankfort is the same as the Courthouse ledger. Peggy Ray
