Well, the thoughts shall be short; on my 4 hours sleep, Martha Harrison and I spent 6 hours at the KY Library in Bowling Green and really accomplished a LOT. If you've never visited there, it's worth your time; the staff there is wonderful, their holdings extensive and it's always a joy to go camp out there for a few hours. On the puzzler. For all of you who are answering that this is a farm, buildings, homestead ... no. This might be an alternate definition but not what I am looking for. Quite a few of you are getting it correct, so if you sent in a guess re homestead, farm, etc .... look some more and try again!!! See you tomorrow after a little more sleep with Monroe Co newspaper tidbits. Kat, Elizabeth HARPER CRUMP, d/o Hance and Rhoda HARPER, is the wife of Archibald (Archer) CRUMP. I suspect that Rhoda may have a given name of Elizabeth as well (Nancy being the nickname) which would make the two death listings the same person. Just a note - back from the opthomologist and can sorta see after all the eye drops and tests. My first surgery will be at 8 am on Thursday, 27 April. The 2nd about a month later if all goes well. After learning all the possible problems that can go wrong with this "simple" cataract procedure, I'm about ready to chicken out! So - I'll be able to post up thru the 26th and then see how I feel on the 28th. If in doubt, I'll play hookey with the list. Just a couple of notes before I head off to the opthomologist to meet with the surgeon. I'll know the secheduled dates of the surgeries at this time likely. The Jesse James program last night was VERY well attended and was quite interestering. No genealogy was covered per se, the speaker dealt primarily with the forming of the James-Younger gang and later the James gang and their trail of robberies through Missouri, KY and WV. He had pictures of some of the gang members, mentioned that many of the original gang were all former Civil War soldiers serving under Quantrill and that they had specific hideouts throughout the various areas which were often provided by their Civil War buddies. Mention was made of the robbery of the stage coach at Mammoth Cave and the accusation of the wrong man being imprisoned for 18 months until Jesse was recognized from a photo after he was killed by Ford. As a humorous side note, the speaker mentioned that everywhere he puts on a program, someone in the audience normally states that Jesse and Frank stayed with their grandparents or some kinfolk. He has decided they must have stayed with everyone! He described their method of robbing banks and trains, that they always rode the best of horses and how they came into town posing as horse or cattle dealers looking for stock; well dressed and well mannered. I don't believe that the program was videotaped unless they were set up in back and I didn't see them. It was an extremely interesting program! Now, some breakfast and off to the eye doc! Charlie has just posted the puzzler - have at it! Sandi
Don't faint - I know it's Sunday! I will be away from the computer tomorrow and decided to go ahead and post this now. When Charlie has a chance, he will post the puzzler for the week. Be sure to check it out on the link in my signature line called gensoup. I will be on-line Tuesday; I have an early morning appt Wed with the eye surgeon to do some preliminary testing and set a schedule for the first surgery. I might have my eyes dialated so if I don't post Wed, it's because I can't focus yet! Thanks for the emails! When I have to be offline due to the surgeries, Bill Utterback will be monitoring the list for me. Most of you know Bill from my frequent references to he and his expertise or from his Jackson Purchase area list. This list has been wonderful over the years and I expect no problems while I'm away (I'll let you know what days as soon as I find out). But, if someone has a problem, Bill will be there and he's one smart gentleman! Minute Book 4, p. 315: State of Kentucky, Barren Co sct. 15 Dec 1823 appeared John BEVIS, late a private in the Army of the Revolution aged 61 years on the 4th of Feb last. Past resident of Barren County. Said under oath that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: Enlisted in 1780 in Virginia but in whose company, due to a lapse of time and from a decayed memory, has forgotten. Was marched to the Magazine in Mcklinburg Co VA, thence to Petersburgh, thence to Chesterfield, then to the headquarters of Gen GREEN at Chesam Hills in South Carolina. Was there transferred to Capt LAWSON's Company & attached to the 2nd VA Regiment. Continued there until after the battle of Guilford and was then transferred to Capt BARBER's Company and attached to the 32nd Regiment. Remained there until discharged. He believes the 2nd Regt was commnded by Col. GREENE at the time he joined; but doesn't remember if Greene was killed, transferred or resigned after the battle of Guilford. When the subject ws discharged he was commanded by Major SNEED in Jan or Feb 1782. I have not since that time by gift, sale or otherwise disposed of my property in order to claim a pension. Attached is the schedule of property, is in debt $87.50 in paper money. His family consists of he, his wife (who is about the same age), one daughter who was born Aug 13, 1791 and is totally deranged and helpless and has been for many years. Schedule shows he owned 50 acres of land at $50; four head of cattle at $16; nine head of sheep at $9; a mare and colt at $25, nine head of hogs at $18; two beds at $25; Castings at $5; 10 knives and forks at $1.50; seven charis at $1.75; 4 pewter plates at $1.00 for a total of $152.25. Sworn before Wm LOGAN, Clerk on 15 Oct 1838. Logan attested that he believed Bevis was worth less than $200.
