    3. Can anyone help me out? I am looking for marriage records, probably in the 1860s, and possibly in Monroe County, KY for W. J. Bryant (I believe the W. is Whaley and the J. is Jonas) to Susan Turner P. Ann Bryant (I believe the P. is Pomeroy, but I also believe she went by Ann) to unknown Wilmouth H. Bryant (female) to unknown. I cannot find W. J. Bryant in the 1860 census. He was born March 3, 1837 according to my records. I could really use some help finding him in the 1860 census. He was in Macon County, Tennessee in the 1850 census. 1. A PLAY ON THE NAMES IN BARREN CO
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. It's Thursday and I don't usually post on Friday's, so I thought we needed to end the week on a lighter note. This is abstracted from a column I did for the Glasgow Daily Times 5 Jan 1994 and I thought you might enjoy it. "Recently as I was working with the old tax lists of our county, I got to thinking, in a nonsensical sort of way, about the surnames found in the oldest pages of our history. This article is definitely NOT going to be one of any great genealogical or historical depth, but, if you will allow me a little "pllay on names", you might learn many of the settler's names who were here before the year 1810. "We had abundant vegetation and beautiful scenery in those early days. There were ACRES of beautiful land. We had ASH, BERRY's, BROOKS, BUSHes, CHERRY's, CREEKS, DALE's, FIELDS, FOR(r)ESTS, HIGH HILLS, LEMONS, MOSS, OAKS, PARKDS, POOL(es), REEDS, rivers to WADE that trickled along, ROCK's, ROSE's, ROUNDTREES, SNOW, SUMMERS, VINEYARDS, WEBBS and WOODS. "The wildlife was abundant. We had BASS, BIRDs, CAMELs, CROWs, DRAKEs, HOG(g)s, LAMBS, LIONS, MARTIN's, PEACOCK's, ROACHes, SPARROWs, WOLVES, and WRENS. Just about every BREED. "Our occupations were varied. There were BAKERs, BARBERs, BISHOPs, BUTLERs, CARPENTERs, CARTERs, CARVERs, CASTLEMEN, COALMEN, COOPERs, DRIVERs, DUKEs, FORRESTERs, HUNTERs, KINGs, MILLERs, PIPERs, MARSHALLs, PAINTERs, RIDERs, SHIPMEN, TANNERs, WAG(g)ONERs, and WARDENs. There were, of course, many varieties of SMITHS. "Many structures and implements came from those early days and are still in evidence. ALLEYs, BARN(e)s, BEAMs, BELLs, BOWLes, BRIDGES, BUTTONs, CARRs, CHAMBERS, COMBs, COURTs, CUPs, GATES, HALLs, HARBOURs, HOMES, LANEs, LOCKs, ROADs, PICKET(t)s, PILES of RATTLES, STEEL, TEMPLEs, WELLS and WHETSTONEs. "Our early settlers could easily be described by their appearance or personality. There were those who had BROWN BEARDs, wore GRAY BIB(b)s, those embarrased BELCHERs, schoolgirls with GREEN COATS with HOODs on them; ladies with locks of BLACK CURLS, those brave citizens who were not afraid to venture FORTH and GOFORTH. Some were HANDY; some were HARDY. There was the housewife known as the HARPER. The men worked DAY and (K)NIGHT. Some were as mischievious as the DICKENS. They had their ups and DOWNs. The THRASHERs worked hard in the field. James was always JOLLY; William was nicknamed the LEAPER. They never seemd to feel LOW(e). They believbed in good LUCK. "The POINTERs could never been classified as ROTTEN. The city officials were always the one who RUSHed. They protected their families from the SAVAGEs. The citizens were SHARP - very SMART. You could see the SPRINGERS outrunning the WALKERs. They were WILEY and LIVELY. Many CREWS of men, SHORT and tall, LITTLE and big. They had lots of LOVE for their country, yes, they were very LOVING. They were never PETTY. They were TRUE to their BOND; like BROTHERS in the wilderness. The pioneer was known as a GOODMAN; a JEWEL(l). They could be AUGUST and BRIGHT; LE(a)VEL headed. Even though they had very meager MEANS (some had only had a few PENCE), they were the real McCOY. They celebrated the HOL(l)IDAY's and loved good simple MUSIC(k). Many were known to go to the fancy BALL's. "This is just a SAMPLE of those who SETTLE(d) here in Barren County in those early days. George BUSH was here long before he became Prtesident, and Tom DOOLEY was often seen hanging dwon his head. Whether they came from Virginia, Tennessee, deSPAIN or points out WEST, they blended together into a community with the ENGLISH, FRENCH, and with all the SCOTT's. Why, one newcomer came all the way from MAR(r)s. "Put all these togethere with the GARNETTS, MATTHEWS, EDMUNDS, ROGERS, GORINS HUFFMANS, JONES, JOHNSONS, RENNICKS - and that is what made Barren County the greatest county in Kentucky." Now the reader knows most of the names in Barren Co in 1810! 1. Child of George & Mary F. (Bowles) Davenport - 1846
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. According to the Barren County marriage book (page 59) George Davenport married Mary F. Bowles on 24 Oct 1844. According to a letter written by Nathaniel V. Bowles written in December 1850 (transcribed by Inez M. Bowles in "Thomas Bowles, Hanover County", page 43) "I will write about my children ... Mary F. Bowles (born) Sept. 21 1825 Married Oct. 24th 1844, Died Sept. 30th 1846." Then later in the letter he says, "Mary's husband died in March and she in September, leaving an infant daughter 13 days old, who has been raised up to this time with her grandfather and mother. She is very sprighty and could we now have her and keep her she might make a splendid woman, but my hopes in that respect are all blasted, it is about 30 miles to where they live ..." From this I gather that George Davenport died in March 1846; that Mary had a daughter on or about 17 Sep 1846, and then Mary died 13 days later on 30 Sep 1846. Finally it appears that George's parents took the infant girl to raise. Anyone know the names of George's parents, or the name of the infant girl? This in not my line, and I have no additional information, but I thought this might be of use to someone. Charlie

    1. IN CLOSING MONDAY, 15 MAY 2006 - PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. 1st - Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week and thanks for all the good guesses from last week! To make a guess, click on gensoup in my signature line and I'll receive your guess as an email. 2nd - Some up-coming events you might be interested in if you're in the area! June 10th: Bell's Tavern Heritage Festival, Park City KY, Festival music performances begin at 1:00 p.m. This is always a fun event. If you have any questions (I don't have a lot of information yet), Contact Joy Lyons at djlyons@alltel.net June - Adair Co will be holding it's first book fair. I will get the information and send it in a separate post this week. June 3rd and 4th: The wonderful Glasgow Scottish Highland Games. There will be activities starting on the 30th of May, but the weekend to tour the games, meet the clans, watch the competitions and hear the music will be Sat and Sunday. This is my favorite event of the entire year; it is clean, inexpensive, colorful and thrilling. For further information check out: http://www.glasgowhighlandgames.com/default.htm If you love Scottish music (bagpipes and drums especially) Albannach and Seven Nations will have you standing on your feet cheering. They perform throughout the weekend free plus an evening concert on the lake. Many clans are in attendance with information on genealogy; Scottish games are held in the center arena; good food .... yummy! 3rd - I encourage you to check out the Barren Co query board. If you are on the KYBARREN list, queries posted to the board are cross-posted to the list but not vice versa. There is a ton of information out there - wills, deeds, marriages, obituaries, etc plus queries. To get their easily - click on the URL in my signatkure line called SCKY links and then click on the Barren Co board. You need to check out the Barren Co website too - there is a LOT of information there, photographs, etc. You can follow the same link in my signature line to get to the website also. As a special request! If you post a query or reply to one on the query board, there is a line where you enter the surnames that you mentioned in the query. PLEASE fill out this surname line, it makes it easier to be picked up on search engines where other people can find your query. List ONLY the names of those mentioned in your post - not all of the names for which you are searching. The easiest and most proper format would be to list the names such as: Jones, Smith, Keepemsneezing (etc). Non caps, separated by commas. 4th - a smidgen of progress on my eye. Still have blurriness but seem to be able to see a little more each week. Continuing on prednisone drops for 2 more weeks and then another appt with my eye doc. Still a little imbalance from seeing differently from both eyes - and I'm still not answering a ton of emails - trying to get a few replied to each day.If the blurriness does not disappear, I have to wait 3 months after the surgery and then have laser surgery to correct the situation. Have a great day gang and thanks for all the Mother's Day greetings! 1. FOR THE MOMS ON THE LIST
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I couldn't let the time pass without wishing all the Moms on our lists a wonderful and Happy Mother's Day. Guys, you can eavesdrop - or think of your own Mom or wife. When I first started genealogy, I soon learned that many people weren't interested in tracing the descendants of the daughters - too much trouble they said. Well .... they didn't know what they were missing. When we think of the hardships that our pioneer ancestors (and back) endured; marrying many times in their teens, having 10-15 children; living in a one or two room cabin with no televisions, video games, microwaves, washers and dryers, no electricity ... it is a miracle that they survived and kept their sanity. It would put most of modern-time Moms to shame --- we complain if the cable is out, the internet down, the car making a funny noise, or the vacuum needs a new filter! So, I just wanted to stop in and say - Moms, you ARE appreciated! Take a few minutes guys to stop and think of your own Mom, what they did for us, and what many still do for us. 1. Motley Cemetery
    2. I've been reviewing some of my material and have some pictures of gravestones in the old Motley Cemetery. I believe it is now the Carlton Allen Farm. In looking at them, I have two that I cannot identify. Maybe some of you can help. There are seven tombstones, some appear to be newer and are standing, while others are on the ground. The three newer ones are: Thomas R Mottley (spelling has changed to two t's) 1/31/1871 - 11/21/1929 G. W. Mottley 10/12/1848 - 8/6/1927 (My records show 9/4/1927) Serrilda Claypool Mottley 6/11/1857 - 5/13/1929 The older ones are: Sarah B. (Goodnight) Motley 2/13/1822 - 5/21/1882 J. A. Motley (John A.) 1/26/1818 - 5/11/1888 Mary E, wife of J. L. Evans 3/21/1845 - 8/30/1881 Now here are the two that I cannot connect........... Carl Motley 11/25/1880 - 11/27/1880 and Evert, son of (looks like, P & L M) Martin 11/29/1894 - 6/3/1896 Would anyone know who the last two are? And, I would like to connect up with whoever put up the three newer stones. They are quite large. I would also like to see about having the area fenced in as the cattle get in there and there is large debris from trees in the pictures. The pictures were taken several years ago, so things may have changed and I was told Mr. Allen wouldn't mind. Thanks for any help that you might have! Bobbie Rennie

    3. Hi List, And here it is, easily click able for us NETSCAPE users, as most of you seem to forget. http://www.seeamerica.org My Editorial>>>Why people don't use Netscape, I'll never understand. Being able to open up more than one web site at a time makes IE obsolete. With Netscape and its tab browsing, I can open up as many as 10-15 web sites at one time. Of course, you must have HSI, high speed internet, to open up this many web sites at once, but it makes surfing on the internet a real surf adventure. When I open up my homepage I am presented with 13 tabs, including the NY times, Washington Post, ESPN Sports, FOX Sports, CBS Sportsline, NASA, etc, so that I can see these web sites as fast as I can click from one to the other. I also have 15 different comics set up in tab browsing, I have 10 different World Sports sites in another set, the uses are endless. In the past, I have had only newspapers, or only weather sites for 10-15 cities I was interested in. oK, for us NETSCAPE users, here is what we require in our mail program. http://www.seeamerica.org We can click on this and it will work..... we cannot click on seeamerica.org......this doesn't work with the Netscape Mail Program. I am so thrilled to hear that Sandi is recovering at a nominal rate from her eye surgery without problems that are not out of the ordinary in post surgical recovery. My long story is that I have had Cataract surgery on my left eye and see very clearly, and did so from the moment the surgery was over. The post surgical funny things that go on with the eye are a nuisance that most everyone experiences and luckily I had very few. The part that I have learned is that I also have a cataract in my right eye, but since I have changed my diet (related to my diabetes, I now eat lots of tree nuts, fruit, and oranges as my main foods from waking until dinner 5-6 days a week),this has allowed me to go off my insulin injections, my metformin pills, and essentially control my blood sugar and my life with my diet. A diet that most humans should eat, not what we currently eat....but that is the longer story.. As a result of this diet, the cataract in my right eye has gotten clearer, but I don't think that it will ever clear up to match my new plastic lens, however, it remains clear enough that I feel that I don't need another eye surgery. If I had known this beforehand, I would not have had surgery, even though my new plastic lens is unbelievably clear while my natural lens gives me a very pastel world. Where is the genealogy? Making genealogy easier through better health and better computer communication, it can't get much better than that. Well I'd better go! 3. Sandi, Good moring, I also subscribe to Kim's Newsletter, but I believe it should be seeamerica.org instead of seeamerica.com As we all know, with website addresses it doesn't take much to make a hugh difference.
