I was a chained tiger all yesterday afternoon and all of today. I did something stupid to the computer, but was following instructions from a software manufucturer ... they were wrong and my system forgot it had a C and D drive. Thus, I could not boot the system or anything. An angel came by this evening that I'd never met but was well recommended (my regular fixer-upper computer guy wasn't available.) I will never, ever, ever mess with the system again!!! I would like to thank Reggie who posted for me this morning that I was down, Bill Utterback who tried to "talk" me thru this problem long distance through my daughter in another town (via emails back and forth and then her phone calls to me), and Sherri who was ready to try to help over the phone. I appreciate all of you and wish I had 1/2 your expertise and helpfulness! I'll try to catch up tomorrow with the post from today and tomorrow. Oh - one last thing. I had my eye appt in between times too. My doc said that there is an impressive improvement in my eye from my last appt 3 weeks ago - and my vision is testing 20/25 in that eye. I still am blurred and don't have crisp vision in the short to medium range field - ok on distance. I go back next Tuesday and if the rest of the corneal swelling is down, will get a new glass prescription. He is allowing me to hold off on the other surgery until after my daughter's wedding the end of July and/or until I get gutsy enough to go thru this again! See you tomorrow and I apologize for the personal note. I have about 100 emails to read now and then crash for the day!! I just returned from Randolph Smith's funeral. The family is taking his death well. I know they would appreciate notes of sympathy. Address his daughter Laura Butler at: llbutler@hotmail.com. The minister used terms like 'unassuming, modest, humble, giving, etc.' all of which described Randolph. His life was one of service to others. Although he had been out of the mainstream for several years, the church was full of friends. He will be sadly missed, as he did so much for people, not just of our county but total strangers. He never met a stranger, only friends he hadn't met before! Joyce Stover

Happy Memorial Day to all of you as we remember those who have gone before, including our soldier boys and girls of our past who gave their all for their country. I decided to go ahead and make a post this morning with my coffee; if you are enjoying a picnic with your family or at a family reunion, you can read this later! Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week - give it a try! Click on the URL in my signature line called gensoup. Sometimes when I receive your answer via email, I can't get a reply back to you - don't know what causes the occasional glitch, I do try to answer you all. Tomorrow is my next eye appt to check the progress of the surgery; I am still limping along with less than perfect vision in the eye but perhaps there is improvement that I don't notice!!! I should have time to make my posts first. Have a wonderful day; stay staff and I'll see you tomorrow! I know that many of you on these lists, if you've worked with the records of Cumberland Co at all, know Randolph Smith. I was privileged to meet him only one time at our bookfair here in Glasgow, several years ago. I've used his material so much in the last 20 years - the transcriptions of the source documents he did for Cumberland Co is almost all there is for us researchers. Joyce Stover on our SCKY list sent me this announcement which I am posting as she wrote it. Sandi, you may have heard that Laura Butler's dad, Randolph Smith, died yesterday afternoon. Visitation is at Ballou and Stotts Funeral Home today after 3, and again tomorrow. The funeral will be at 2 tomorrow at the Burkesville Methodist Church where he was a long-time member. Randolph was a wonderful genealogist and abstracted many, many county records that would otherwise have been lost. Over the years, he answered thousands of queries and to my knowledge, never charged anyone for anything he did for them. He donated his vast collection of books and files to the local library, and the genealogy department has been named "The Randolph Smith Genealogy Library". Randolph was a former mayor Burkesville and held a state office in the KY. Historical Society. There is much more that could be said about him, but he was a modest man and would not want all his accolades to be listed. I haven't talked with Laura personally to see about memorial contributions, but my husband and I will donate to the library genealogy dept. in his memory. If you don't mind, let the listers know so they can post messages of sympathy to Laura and her family. Cumberland Co. has lost one of its finest citizens! Thanks! Joyce >From Sandi - you may send email messages of condolence to Laura at: butler@duo-county.com Many of you who have attended our book fair have met Laura; she hasn't missed a year. She has been re-publishing many of her Dad's book and is a friend to man. The assignee receives that which is being assigned by the assignor. Most often it is being bought/sold, but occasionally it is transferred without payment. Similar terms are grantor and grantee which you will often see in indexes for deed books. The suffix -or indicates one who is doing something; the suffix -ee indicates the one who is receiving that action. Clear as mud? >Are we saying that when the word "assignee" appears in a document, we can >"translate" it as buyer? >Mary June
Are we saying that when the word "assignee" appears in a document, we can "translate" it as buyer? Mary June
Not necessarily, Boxer B. It can mean only that control of the property is being assigned to someone else, or that water or mineral rights or some other right that rest with an owner, have been assigned. A reading of the document will nearly always declare what is being assigned, It can mean he property is being sold, but the mere use of the word will not of itself mean that it is being sold. To further complicate the picture, it may mean that the assignee has agreed to be responsible for the well-being of the property, a renter, and in these cases the document likely will carry a date at which the agreement ends. Sandi or anyone: Can anyone explain the application of the term "assignee" as used in VA and KY land grant records and deeds. I find it used often when describing land acquired by war veterans, usually Rev War. It appears it can be used over and over on the same land, A assigns to B, B assigns to C, etc. Also worded, A assignee of B, etc. Here are a couple of samples. From a VA document: In Feb of 1780 five Bounty Land Warrants for 50 acres (each) were issued to Robert Goode, assignee of Freeman Lewelling, John Gaulding, Charles Howell, and James Foster, privates under Col. William Byrd. Charles Howall proved he served two campaigns, Pr. Edward Co. Also, a Bounty Land Warrant for 50 acres was issued to Robert Goode, assignee of Jeremiah Penix, heir at law of his brother, Edward Penix, dec'd, who was a private under Col. William Byrd. Jeremiah Penix died soon after he returned home and assigned the right to Robert Goode. From a KY deed: Granted to Peter Simmons, assignee of Samuel Goode, assignee of William Reading, assignee of Curtis Hack, by Commonwealth of KY, Chas Scott Gov, Cert No 3071, granted in 1798, encouraging relief to settlers, etc. Thanks, Don Page

For you Green Co researchers, I would like to give you a list of the publications available from the Green Co Genealogical Society. I have some of these books and they are excellent. For 14 years I have been working on compiling records, along with Martha Harrison .. and finally am finished. This is one reason I've been a little quiet the past few weeks (along with my eye challenge) ...I needed to get this book finished up. This is just for your information. BARREN COUNTY KY UNRECORDED BURIALS. Annotated. Includes over 6,000 unrecorded burials in Glasgow Municipal and Happy Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow plus Barren Countians buried out of the county, cremations and burials where locations are unknown. Burials shown include those citizens not recorded in the Barren County Cemetery book dying from the 1880's through 1991, those dying 1992 to May 18, 2006, and corrections and additions to the cemetery book. Contains additional information on many individuals including, when possible, spouse name, parent's name, military service, fraternal organizations, some causes of death and some biographical information. Also contains a large list of out of county cemeteries and locations for those buried outside of Barren County and sources for information. Sources include information provided by A. F. Crow and Son Funeral Home, Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home, death certificates, newspapers, information from burial permits and the records provided by Glasgow Municipal Cemetery (which include hundreds of burials not shown in the Barren County Cemetery book). It has a 15,000 full-name index. 301 pages! In the past, I have provided the indexes for you, this one is too big, the index is 66 pages long. I am not ready to do look-ups but sometime in the near future will hopefully give you guys a list of the surnames listed - this has been a BIG project! If you have any questions (outside of look-ups), write me privately. Martha is almost done with her companion book (it got too big for us to put all this in one book) .... it will cover the county cemeteries including over 5,000 more burials found in over 180 unrecorded cemeteries. She has done a marvelous job and traveled many miles looking for these cemeteries, checking the same sources I did; and reading a lot of newspapers on microfilm. Her book should be available this fall if all goes right. I think between us we have found a lot of burial locations and individuals. That's it for today; tomorrow will be the Monroe Co newspaper post. Wishing you all a good day!
