When searching for an illusive ancestor who seemingly doesn't like to see his name in print ... researchers will go to the most obscure places to find them. I have often told the story of attempting to find a fellow here in Barren Co in the very early days of the county - his child married here, but past that - nothing. It was not until years later that I stumbled upon some old minute books of the Circuit Court and found him ... he had been fined 3 cents for swearing 3 oaths in the earshot of the justices. And I am always curious as to how our ancestors lived; little trivia about them that made them more real. In so doing, I have located the 1849 and 1850 "Jack and Stud" registrations - with a few tavern licenses thrown in - which lists the: name of the owner, the name of the animal and type, the fee paid. I ran a series on these for Warren Co in the past. So for a while, as a little extra for Friday's (or when I have a spare moment), I'm going to list these and I hope it might help some of you - or just be interesting! These are written on TINY scraps of paper and follow the same format - "I do certify that ____ this day paid me the sum of ____ the season price of his (Horse, jack, stud). Since there is no existing 1890 census, the school census for the late 1800s is an important substitute database for that census. I have spent a lot of time at my local LDS Family History Center reading the Monroe Co school census on microfilm and wishing that someone would transcribe it for me. A transcription now exists. Dayton Birdwell and Shelta Shrum have prepared a book containing Monroe Co, KY, school census records from the 1880s and 1890s along with some other material from that time period. There are some surnames that we study diligently, while other surnames tend to filter into the mix little by little over a period of time. The Fitzgerald line keeps finding its way into my database, and I now have quite a lot on the Mudlick (Monroe Co) Fitzgeralds. There is another Fitzgerald clan that originated in the Center Point area. As far as I can tell they have different origins. The Fitzgeralds have for the most part modified their name to Geralds (Gerald, Gearlds, etc) through the years and some families seemed to have switched back and forth during the 1800s in Monroe Co. It is not always clear which is the best version to use for a given individual. The progenitors of the Mudlick clan were 3 siblings from Washington Co, TN, whose father was a George Fitzgeralds, about whom I know nothing. They were 1. Mary Jane Geralds 2. Akin Geralds 3. William "Randolph" Gerald (often called Rudy) Mary Jane Geralds married Mahlon Jones in Washington Co, TN, and they came to Monroe Co around 1822. Akin Geralds married Jane P Colley and they came to Monroe Co about 1835. Rudy Gerald married Molly Hunt, went to Sullivan Co, TN, for a while and then to Monroe Co in the 1850s. I have printed out a descendancy chart for this line and it can be viewed at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/files/fitzgerald/geralds.txt If you are interested in the Geralds of Monroe County, then you may wish to comment upon or make corrections to this data. I would say that the Mother Lode for the Janes family name is probably Adair, which adjoins Metcalfe, but I have known Janes in Russell, Cumberland, Taylor, Green and LaRue. Strangely, since they were in Hart, I never heard of anyone named Janes. Sandi, I have to say that this is such an informative list. You are really awesome! I'm looking for David JANES. He was born in 1811 in KY. I don't know which county, but he lived in Metcalf in 1860. He married Nancy [poss. HUGHART] around 1829. His children were: Rebecca, Henry, Martha, Grace, Elizabeth, James, Nancy, Eliza and William O.(my ancestor). William was born in Munfordsville in 1851. There were many Janes families in the area. I have not been able to place this David with any of them. Thank you so much! -- Twigs (Sheri)^..^ CC JacksonCountyIN GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~injackso/index.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familytwigs/index.html
Just a note of explanation again. More and more of you are using the Barren Co board (and others) to seek for information and this is great! There are over 17,000 posts out on the Barren Co board - not only queries but a LOT of source data such as wills, deeds, marriages, a ton of obituaries, etc. I go thru all these posts, and of course, posts made to the Barren Co board are cross-posted to the Barren Co list. As a help to you. When you finish the query, go to the surname box and enter ONLY the surnames that are mentioned in your query. Please don't list every surname you're working on. Type them in this format: (Made up names of course!) Jones, Smith, Slaphappy, Confusedone Type them in lower case separated by commas. Why? These names will be picked up by the rootsweb search engine. If you leave the box blank, it won't help in directing others to your query. As the board manager or whatever you call it, I check each query posted on the boards and make changes when I have time to the surnames listed in the query. I CANNOT make any changes to the body of the query - this is your information. But I can change the subject line and the surname box. It takes a goodly amount of time and we only do this to make it easier for others to find you. Be sure your subject line is concise - exactly who or what you are looking for. It makes it stand out better! And, again, when you see a post on the Barren Co LIST that was cross-posted from the BOARD - you need to go to the board if you have information. Many people who post queries on the board have never heard of the list. They will never see your reply if you reply to the list. Thanks! For Barren Co posts next week - Next Monday I'll be starting a series on a historical old church called the Blue Springs Baptist Church. The original book no longer exists so this book covers membership and business from Dec 1844 thru Feb 14, 1900. I will not be going thru meeting by meeting, but will instead cover the members who belonged there with what comments were made; there are references to the church people 1799-Dec 1844. There is a new tool for searching the rootsweb list messages. It's in beta mode right now but usable. It searchs ALL the lists on Rootsweb at once, not just a specific one. This is great if your missing ancestor doesn't have a common name The lists have been around a LONG time and the email address of the poster may not be any good. The search is very rapid - I knew I'd typed a lot over the years (1996 on ...) and when I did a search on my name, it had 29,000 hits. Ouch! I did bring up some of my old posts with an email addy I haven't used for the past 5-6 years and this is likely to happen with others. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week - thanks for the good response to last week's puzzle. It's easier when you can google for the answer. I don't mind if you do a search for the answer - that's what I am encouraging; many of our quesions can be answered by spending a little time searching! I'll be back tomorrow with the Monroe Co post and not venturing far from home - I had my annual fight with poison ivy and it won! See you tomorrow! This will be concluding the series. Order Book 4, p. 366 - Pension Application for John FOSTER. Applicant states that he is about 69 years old. He enlisted in the Revolutionary War in Albermarle Co VA 15 Feb 1776, enslisting for a period of two years. The company was commanded by Matthew JOIETT in the regimand commanded by Col Wm DANGERFIELD of the Virginia or Contininental Esta blishment. He didn't remember the regiment #. At his discharge the regiment was commanded by Col McCLANAHAN. He continued his service until 4 Mar 1778 when he was discharged by Gen. WASHINGTON at Valley Forge in PA. He has lost his discharge but was in the Battle of Brandywine and various skirmishes. He is a citizen, he is reduced circumstances and stands in need of support. /s/ John FOSTER. There is another statement from the above which gives a little more informaion. He states that he is a cripple - was run over several years ago by a carriage. This accident broke three of his ribs and keeps him from doing manual labor. His family consists of himself, his wife who is about his age - about 6 months younger than he and she also is a cripple for the past 7 years. She is unable to do ordinary house labor. This is the end of the Rev. War book. There were several pages torn out at the back of the book (which I do not have) - perhaps there were other applications on those pages - Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/gorin/puz.html SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/

I am working off a photostatic copy of the 1821 tax lists for Allen Co. If I misinterpret any of writing and get someone's name spelled incorrectly, please post the correction to the list. This list was filed 12 Sept 1821 by Wm THOMAS, Deputy Clerk. There are several things written on the cover page which inclues: William HOLDER, Daniel HOLDER, No ____. William PULLIAM Commissioners Book Year 1821. This is repeated twice more. Whites: 378. Blacks: 215; total 593. To this is added 464 for a total of 1057. No indication of what the 464 indicates. Then, Allen Co KY. Column headings are: Persons Names Chargeable Tax, 2nd rate land, 3rd rate land, County in which the land lies, Water Course on which the land lies, In Whose Name Entered, In Whose Name Surveyed. On the 2nd page were whites over 21, blacks over 16, total blacks, horses, stud horses, rates of coverage, jacks, rates of coverage, taverns, billiard tables, Wheel carriages, no of wheels, town lots, town where the lots lie, value of land and total value. In these posts I am only going to be showing the name, acreage, rating of land, location and whites over 21. Land in Allen Co unless otherwise noted. The tax records were kept in alphabetical order by the first initial of the last name. This then cannot indicate if the individuals were neighbors - each letter of the alphabet had ATWOOD, John: 78 1/2 (3rd), Difficult, 1 ASHFORD, John R: no land, 1 ASHFORD, Thomas: no land, 1 ATWOOD, James Jr: 105 (3rd), B. You'll likely receive 2 copies of today's Monroe Co post - don't ask me why, but my system sent it twice. My apologies! I spent all weekend working on biographies for the KYBIOGRAPHIES list - have 101 ready to send out (one a day) - today's was on Barren Co. There are several hundred that I'm not finished with yet and am trying to find references to all counties in KY. I did find quite a few for this area of the state - Barren, Adair, Allen, Cumberland, Hart etc - taken from several sources. I just finished scanning Ohio, IL, MO and IA and will be checking the others states for our Kentucky men and women who moved to those states. Wishing you a good Tuesday - now it's back to my cup of coffee - tomorrow will be the first in a series on some of tax records of Allen Co. Sunday is such a special day; a day to salute our blessed fathers .... Please, if your father is living, visit him, call him, make him feel like a king. If your father is no longer with you, re-live with your family things that made him so special. I know some fathers didn't always fall into the category of being a perfect father; some of you might have been abandoned by your father and my heart grieves for you. I miss my Dad. He died 10 years ago and there is not a day that passes that something will remind me of him. He wasn't famous. He wasn't able to serve in the military. He wasn't rich. But he was the most wonderful Dad that I could have ever had. At 83 when he died, he looked 60 though he was almost totally deaf and macular degeneration had robbed him of most of his vision. Up to a month or so of his death, he was still working on my old Honda; he had been a mechanic most of his life and he could fix that car by feel. He wasn't a carpenter, never could drive a nail straight or measure things exactly. But he took an old lawn mower handle, attached a wooden box somehow to it and made a "green mobile" for my daughters to push their stuffed animals around with. Dad never figured out what all the fuss was about genealogy. But, he was so proud of me. Even in his partial blindness, he "interviewed" me about all the books I'd written, the cemeteries we had visited, the adventures we'd had and wanted to publish it as "Genealogy She Wrote." He never finished that book, he couldn't see his own writing and it was above his head. A high school graduate from central IL, one of 6 children, of which 5 were sisters. He was born just after World War I, lived through the depression, and wanted to serve in World War II but was rejected because of a back problem. He worked hard - not at fancy jobs that garnered praise, but just blue collar jobs where you sweat a lot, hurt a lot, and bring home just enough to feed to family and not much more. I don't remember my Daddy telling me he loved me many times, but I knew it. He was not a hugger but I could always feel his arms of love around me. Two days before he died - he was tired and had to nap; his heart was giving out but we didn't know it. The doctor had assured us that his congestive heart failure was being treated successfully. He had just changed a tire on my car a couple of days before that. But, I think he knew somehow. He got up, came over and threw his arms around me. He looked at me with those piercing blue eyes which I inherited and said, "honey, I love you." Little did I know that when I said "I love you too Daddy", it would be the last time I'd hear those words. So Father's Day still means a lot to me. I think of all the little things he did, the big things he did and the list would go on for pages. I since lost husband, father-in-law, and have no living male relatives except one I haven't seen for many years and one living uncle. I can't wish them Happy Father's Day. So, I'm sending it out to all the Dad's on the lists that have stuck with me for years or are new to the list. You are special. I'm proud of you. Happy Father's Day to all of you and Happy Father's Day Daddy, I till love you.
