    1. Re: [SCKY] BOUNCED EMAILS ON PUZZLERS
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. Taint Sandi's fault. The form is set up to send her your response with the email address you provide. If you mistype it, it's gonna bounce (or worse, end up in someone else's mailbox). Now I can't guarantee that the server might not eat your response, but it's unlikely that if it sends it on to Sandi that it would somehow mess up what you typed. I don't know if you've noticed, but a lot of places on the internet require that you type your email address twice so that it can compare the two and see if they are the same. The form I use (it comes from Rootsweb) doesn't do that, so you have to be careful the first time. ;-) Charlie At 2:58 PM -0500 7/17/06, Sandi Gorin wrote: >If I don't answer you back on your puzzler guesses - it's because >thanks to some fluke in the system; when I hit reply to give you yes >or no, your email address bounces. 2. Chrystal
    3. Hello, My mother has recently gotten a copy of an old photo from a cousin of hers and she has sent me a copy of it. Someone has attempted to identify the women in the photo, we don't know who, and I'm confused about the orientation of the rows they have listed. From what we understand, it is a group photo of a quilting club. The lady in the very front, in the dark colored dress is my great-grandmother, Annie Gerald Martin. The photo is pre-1934, Grandma Annie died Feb. 1934. The following is what is on the back of the photo: 1st row: left to right: Ms. Sartin, Amanda Dooley, Ms. Dunnigan 2nd row: Dora Johnson, Ms. Isenberg 3rd row: Alene Thomas, Mary Johnson 2 missing not sure who they are. Ethel Lyons Martin (top right half hidden) It is unknown to us what two people in the photo are missing, or even what row they are in. I have uploaded the photo and it can be viewed at http://cbt2.tripod.com/martinalbum/page6.html any help would be appreciated. Chrystal

    1. MEMORIES OF GLASGOW & BARREN CO
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I'm batting around an idea and would like your feedback. There are several old historical accounts of Barren Co - Times of Long Ago by Franklin Gorin (written 1870), Cyrus Edward's book published back in the '40's, Vivian Rousseau's, Background of a Bank (ca 1970's), The Allen newspaper articles (early 1900's), Backroads of Barren Co (William Daniel Tolle's writings up to 1920's), and two books by the late Jimmy Simmons dealing with the Civil War and a look around Glasgow. There is a pictoral history book "Barren County Heritage" with minimal stories and a lot of great pictures - and several books by Cecil Goode which deal primarily with the early days also. C Clayton Simmon's Historical Trip Through Barren Co fills in a few more gaps. But - there isn't a book of remembrances by people who lived here. Stories of their family (not particularly genealogical but can be included briefly) ... but the every day lives. Storms they survived, how the Great Depression or the wars affected the family; old automobiles that the family owned; church memories - the oral tradition type of stories. Robberies, ghost stories, occupations, school memories, epidemics, pets, funny stories, sad stories ... anything that would preserve the everyday life of our citizens. Stories that you remember your parents or grandparents telling you. I'm thinking of putting together a book like this if I can get enough information. The contributor doesn't have to live in Glasgow or Barren Co, but have family from here who just have stories they'd like to preserve. I will be putting a notice in the fall issue of Traces (the quarterly of the historical society here) also to pull in information. Would any of you be interested in sending along tales? The contributor would be given full credit for their stories with their name - address by permission only (if you want to remain anonymous.) If you have a story, or interest in submitting a story, please write me PRIVATELY, not to the list as that could generate a LOT of email that some won't be interested in wading through. Let me know - was just thinking on a Friday! 2. Lyn
    3. My first programming job was in 1964 for General Dynamics/Astronautics. About 15% of the programmers were women. Women were allowed in the computer room if they had a legitimate reason for being there. Generally no one was allowed in except the operators. The first core dumps I deciphered were in octal. Don't recall doing hexadecimal until the IBM 360 came out. And Sandi forgot to mention the joy of reading the holes in paper or mylar tape. I wrote my very first program in college & our keypunch machines had no printing & we had to do our own keypunching so you can imagine the fun. Had to run the cards through a lister to see what they were. If you put them in backwards by accident - tough cookies - go back to the back of the line! If they were OK then the next line to stand in was to run the cards through a compiler/assembler to produce an "object deck" - these were cards in a binary format of the compiled/assembled code. Then stand in another line to run your object deck through the computer to run the program & hopefully get some output. I'll never forget my first printed sheet of output. It was blank!!! What a hoot....lyn Sandi Gorin <sgorin@glasgow-ky.com> wrote: > > Subject: > HOW FAR WE'VE GONE! - NON-GENEALOGY

    1. Re: [SCKY] HOW FAR WE'VE GONE! - NON-GENEALOGY
    2. I believe that one of the great improvements is online research. I used to have to go to the library and read microfilmed articles for my research papers, now I sit at my computer and get full articles through ERIC and never move. No more double vision when I leave and I can save the articles ot my hard drive. It is a different world. My college students are young and do not realize how lucky they are. Thanks for the great historical perspective, Jennefer ----- Original Message ----- From: Sandi Gorin <sgorin@glasgow-ky.com> Date: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 10:14 Subject: [SCKY] HOW FAR WE'VE GONE! - NON-GENEALOGY To: SOUTH-CENTRAL-KENTUCKY-L@rootsweb.com > This is not genealogy, but without it, none of us would have > access to > the web, belong to research lists, etc. > > 25 years ago this year, IBM introduced the 5150 home computer - 1981. > Big deal?
