Good morning from a very travel weary but happy list mom. I've put on a few miles since my Wednesday posts - one of my daughters and I traveled up to central IL for a 3 day visit to the land of my birth, Lincoln, Logan Co IL. Our purpose was not only to see my family there but to attend a family reunion on my daughter's heritage in Bloomington IL - the Sweeney family reunion. 86 years old, this was the first time we've been able to attend and it was a marvelous affair and my daughter was able to meet many of her family on the Gorin side including two 2nd cousins I hadn't seen since the 1970's. Good food, absolutely perfect weather, Irish dancers, lots of photo taking ... it was a ball. A visit to two cemeteries followed where we took a lot of pictures of the Sweeney graves next. Then on the way back home we stopped in Chestnut IL where my late Dad was born and raised and Elkhart IL where my Mom grew up. The trip was 637 miles each way and we reached south central KY at about 8:30 last night. So I am very far behind on reading my email! My other and newly married daughter and her hubby made it back from Halifax Nova Scotia just before we left - so after a marriage, a long drive, a family reunion .... I am ready for some R&R here in my own home! Charlie has posted this week's puzzler already - which I got to him very late last night - give it a try by clicking on the URL in my signature line called gensoup. See you tomorrow - a little more rested! Notes on the members of Blue Springs Church which I posted previously. William W CLACK is buried at the PETTY Cemetery, located in the Hiseville area. Stone indicates 18 July 1800 - 28 July 1853. This was accidently transcribed as CLARK in the original Peden cemetery books of Barren Co, but was corrected in the 1992 update. He is shown in the vital statistics as age 53, male, maried, farmer, born & resided Barren Co, s/o of J & E Clack, died of lung problems.'' Ralph PETTTY is buried at the same cemetery. His stone is now missing; it was engraved 20 Dec 1767 - 26 July 1851. He was a Baptist minister for 46 years. Also buried there was Bety Petty 23 Oct 1779 - 9 June 1844 - a member of the Baptist Church 60 years. And Martha Petty 10 Sept 1817 - 2 Oct 1839 (nee McINTEER). William TWYMAN's burial spot is unknown and his death was not listed in vital statistics. He is shown on the 1850 Barren Co census as age 84, farmer, born VA. His wife had predecesed him and in his household was daughter Emily 44; son William Jr, 33 (a miner), son Garland, 29 (a trader) and son John, 25 (trader.). "Whereas on the 20th day of July 1851 it pleased our Heavenly Father to call from time our one beloved Brother Ralph Petty who was a pastor of this Church from the fall of 1823 up to the December meeting 1844 he served the Church very acceptably & did as much for the cause of Religion as any Minister of the Baptist Denomination in this Region of Country. He was a Baptist preacher Forty Years, died at home in Barren County, Ky. With an abiding hope that he would meet God in Heaven with all the Ransomed of the Lord he joined this Church in. Testee: H. Petty, Clerk." "Whereas on the 23th [sic] day of June 1852 it pleased our Heavenly Father to call from time our once Beloved William Twyman a member of this Church in full fellowship, he died with a hope tht God for Christ Sake had forgiven his sins - Therefore Resolved that the Cause of God has Lost an Example on earth for the prosperity of his Cause and that we deeply Sympathise with his child & Relatives & numerous friends in their bereavement." "Whereas on the 6th day of Nov. 1854 it pleased our Heavenly Father to call from time our once Beloved Sister Elizabeth WOOD, a member of this Church in full fellowship, had been a member of this Church for forty odd Years. She died with her hope Steadfastly fixed in Christ as her Saviour - Resolved therefore that the cause of God Has Lost a bright example on earth & we deeply Sypathise with her Husband her CHildren & numerous friends. Test: H PETTY, Clerk." Her death is shown in the vital statistics, age 78, married, farmer, born VA, died Barren Co, no parents listed, died of old age. Can anyone provide any additional information on the following people? Jacob Lollar and wife Margaret Hamilton. They came to Cumberland County from North Carolina. Had several children, including a daughter Racherl, born about 1803 in Kentucky. The families eventually ended up in Missouri, many of them appear on the Bon Homme Township, St. Louis County, Missouri census in 1830. Rachel Lollar marries a Samuel Steel, I assume in Missouri about 1820. I do not know how many children they had, only a daughter, Susannah, for certain, born by 1824. Samuel Steel dies around 1824. Rachelappears as head of household in the above 1830 census. In 1833, Rachel (Lollar) Steel marries John Green in St. Louis--their children are Lydia, Mary, Ruben, Abborilla, John Woods, and Noah W. John Woods Green and family end up in Texas. I have not found John Green and wife Rachel after 1860 in Missouri. John Green does not appear individually on the 1830 census, but I believe he is the other adult male living with Zedekaih Green (his brother) in Bon Homme Township, St. Louis County, Missouri. John and Zedekiah, as well as two daughters, reportedly named Susan and Elizabeth, are the daughters of Robert Green and wife Nancy Woods. I am trying to prove that these are the four oldest children of Robert Green, who appears on the 1810 census of Cumberland County, Kentucky. Nancy Woods supposedly shortly after 1805--the year the family supposedly came to Kentucky from North Carolina (don't know what county they came from). Robert Green's second wife was Elizabeth Farmer. I descend from the second son of that marriage, Robert Robinson Green. The Greens andFarmers left Cumberland/Monroe county around 1821 for Sangamon County, Illinois, where Benjamin Farmer (Elizabeth's father) died in 1824 and Robert Green, Elizabeth's hiusband, died in a826. Zedekiah Green's name appears in both of their probate files. The signature of oneReuben Lollar appears on one of the land records I have for Robert Green from Cumberland County, I believe the date is 1817. This document is difficult to read. This Reuben could be Rachel Lollar's brother, or possibly an uncle. One other question regarding John Sconce's mother. John Sconce married Catherine (Citty or Kitty ) Farmer, she being Elizabeth's sister. I believe John Sconce's mother was a Murley. Robert Green's neighbor was William Murley, whose second wife was Jane Green--posibly his sister. I figure these two Murleys are related, but I don't know how? Thanks for any answers. Joni Vella
Can anyone tell me where Barton Chapel is? My great grandmother was buried there. She died in Metcalfe County Ky.Her name was Nancy Smith and she was buried there in 1914. I plan to be in the area this weekend and would like to find that grave yard. I feel like it may be a grave yard next to a Church??????????? It would be in Metcalfe county, possibly Barren??????? Sandi: LEECH: Lilly, 45, d/o James & Celia, typhoid, 29 Nov 1852. These names written poorly could also be LOCK/LUCK??? I have Lillie Ann Leech, b. August 04, 1839, as the daughter of Joseph and Celia (Turpin) Leech. This is from a family bible, it seems, that went with Joseph and Celia (my 3Ggrandparents) to Iowa. Lilly is in their household, age 10, in the 1850 census. So it's actually her age and her father (Jas vs. Jos?) where the poor writing is causing transcription errors. Sarah Light (who should be in next week's post) is almost certainly Joseph Leech's sister. I just sent through Thursday's post a day early as I'm going to be away from the computer for a few days. Just a note - with changes coming to ancestry.com (who owns rootsweb) there will be a period of time tomorrow that all the boards will be down. They are saying hours .... it could take longer. So if you try to make a post or check a post and can't get to the board, just give it some time. See you all Monday! It's 10:12 central and I just got back from my daughter's wedding. It was a total success, no glitches at all and my daughter and her new hubby are on their way up north - way up north - to soak in some cooler weather. I might not be posting tomorrow - I need to go back to the church and finish the clean up... the legs, feet and brain all gave out about the same time. We had a large turnout - everyone was on time, everyone was happy - especially the bride and groom. I'll see you Wed until I get a good night's sleep and a fast pick-up tomorrow. Now I'm down to 2 cats .... but have two precious beautiful daughters and 2 wonderful sons-in-law! William Henry Clark, in his 1905 Genealogy of the Clark and Pace Families, made this statement: "Lucinda S. Clark, daughter of Nancy and Samuel Clark, was born March 3, 1824, and was married to William Bowles [26 Jan] 1841. He [was born 2 Nov 1818 and] died in 1867 and she in 1868. Both were buried at the old Bowles place near the head of Fallen Timber creek. They had nine children, Samuel, Jefferson, Crittenden, Te, James, Marcellus, and three daughters whose names I do not know. Jefferson died about 1853 and was buried at the old Bowles place. All the others, if living, are in Kansas and the west." Later he said, "Nancy Hayden Clark, daughter of Nancy G. and Samuel Clark, was born Sept. 9, 1827. She married Austin W. Bowles Jan. 1, 1846, and he died July 4, 1863 and was buried at the old Bowles place. Nancy H. Bowles, died Feb. 19, 1875, and was buried at the old Bowles place." We know that Austin and Nancy Bowles' tombstones are located in the Metcalfe County cemetery designated as the Nunnally Cemetery which is located off Wilbur Glass Road. Also buried there with identifiable tombstones are Silas B. Nunnally and his son Crittendon Nunnally. Siles is said to have died in 1877, and Crittendon died on 1 May 1894 at the age of 22. Silas was a son of John B. and Elizabeth (White) Nunnally. Elizabeth was a sister to Celia White who married John Bowles. That would make Silas Nunnally and Austin Bowles first cousins. John B. and Elizabeth Nunnally were living in the Sartain District of Barren County in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. In 1837, John Bowles, father of Austin Bowles, purchased 458 acres of land on the waters of Fallen Timber Creek in Barren County (now Metcalfe County). In 1852 Elzy M. Bowles, Austin's brother, purchased 28 acres of land from his brother-in-law and sister, Thomas and Elizabeth Shockley, which was also on Falling Timber Creek. We know where this site is because the original home built by Elzy Bowles is still standing and is located north of Wilbur Glass Road and east of Highway 640. This is just north and slightly west of the location of the Nunnally Cemetery. In 1857 Austin Bowles purchased 101 acres from the Witty's. This was located on Glover Creek which is south of Falling Timber Creek and just north of Summer Shade. We have located this farm. About the same time, John Bowles sold 122 acres of his farm to his son William. The deed again indicates that the land was on Falling Timber Creek. We know that Celia White Bowles died before 1850. Her daughter Rhoda, who married Stephen White, died on 14 Apr 1850, leaving an infant son with her father. It is not clear if she died in Illinois or Kentucky, but her son was born in Illinois. It is possible that Stephen White buried her in Illinois, and returned to Kentucky with his infant son. It is also possible that she is buried at "the old Bowles place." Then John Bowles died in either late 1860 or early 1861. Next was Austin Washington Bowles who died on 4 Jul 1863. We know where he is buried. Then William A. Bowles, Austin's brother, died on 30 Mar 1867. Clark tells us that he is buried at the old Bowles place. His wife, Lucinda Clark Bowles, died on 18 Feb 1872 and she too was buried at the old Bowles place. By the way, Lucinda was sister to Austin's wife Nancy who died on 19 Feb 1875 and is buried in the same place. All of this suggests that the present cemetery named the Nunnally Cemetery might contain the unmarked graves of the following people: John Bowles Celia Bowles William A. Bowles Lucinda C. Bowles Rhoda Bowles in addition to the marked graves of Austin and Nancy Bowles. It also suggests pretty strongly that the land purchased by John Bowles in 1837 surrounds the present location of the Nunnally Cemetery. Comments are welcome. Charlie
There is a Dewees family in western NJ. They were in what is now Warren County, the earlier was Sussex. Rachel Dewees married Thomas Stewart who was a secretary to George Washington during the Am. Revolution. Stewartsville, NJ is named for his family. Judy Arthur Williamsville, NY
In Sandy's recent report she mentioned that "the marriage was performed by Rev. Cornelius Deweese." Does anyone know this name/family? Martha in VA
I've been attempting to contact Phil Rhoton, a Monroe Co researcher and the messages have bounced back from 2 different addresses. Does anyone on the lists have a current email address for Phil? Thanks, Colleen Lill
