    1. WILLIAM JOHNSON MURDER 1875
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. WILLIAM JOHNSON MURDER - SEEKING INFORMATION I am seeking information on a murder. The victim was William Johnson who lived at Park, KY. The date of the murder was April 22, 1875. I am seeking the name of the murderer, where the murder took place, reason for the murder and the possible murder of the individual who killed William Johnson. The known facts are: William Johnson was born 12 March 1849; he was married to Josephine Creel/Creal who was born 13 June 1853, died 9 July 1876. William was the son of Jonathan Johnson who was shown on the 1870 Metcalfe County KY census, born March 1802, died 10 Jan 1893. He was married to Emily Yates Johnson who was born 29 Jan 1810 and died 3 May 1900. William and Josephine had three children; her will is on file in Metcalfe Co, Will Book 1, p. 25. The late Governor Louie Nunn knew about the murder and was planning on dictating this information to one of his relatives in Edmonton, but he moved from Park and then died. Governor Nunn's sister lives in the house where William Johnson bled to death and supposedly the blood stains are still visible. Since Park KY is located at the junction of Barren, Metcalfe and Hart Counties, I have been unable to locate any records to date or any family member who still has memories of the murder. It is not known in Metcalfe County and with the transfer of all Circuit Court records up to the 1980's in Barren and other counties, I cannot check for any trial information. If you have heard anything about this murder's details, I would appreciate your contacting me. Thanks! 1. FW: [USGW-Discuss] Petition on reduction in hours for National Archives

    3. Please help us spread the word about this. Mike St. Clair says it all, below. (Note that action needs to be taken by 9 Sep 06 or this will take effect.) Thanks, Sherri ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike St. Clair/TT Sent: 04 September, 2006 8:55 am Subject: Petition on reduction in hours for National Archives In late July, the National Archives announced they were planning to cut back the hours of the Washington DC area facilities of the archives. This would eliminate all evening and Saturday hours and greatly harm the ability of the average genealogist to access the records. For full details, see http://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2006/nr06-125.html While the Archivist of the United States was at the FGS conference he reported that they had received very little feedback from the country's genealogists asking for reconsideration. He was also presented with a request from the chair of the FGS Records Preservation Committee to consider some alternatives and a petition was started to allow genealogists to express their disagreement with the changes and to endorse alternatives that will allow the evening and Saturday hours to continue. You can see more details about that in Dick Eastman's weekly newsletter at: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/quick_please_jo.html The petition can be signed at: http://www.petitiononline.com/FGS2006 I would encourage each of you, as board members of The USGenWeb Project to use your influence to publicize this information throughout the project. Note that the deadline for receiving comments on the proposed changes by the archives is September 9, so there isn't much time. And I suspect that if they succeed in reducing the Washington hours, the regional archives will be soon to follow. I appreciate all that each of you do in support of the project membership and all genealogists with US ancestry. I believe that a little effort in support of this effort by FGS will pay off long term in enhancing our ability to deliver free information to our clients - genealogists everywhere. 1. IN CLOSING MONDAY, 4 SEPT 2006, PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Happy Labor Day! I hope you have a restful day with good weather! I was talking yesterday before church to our new Barren Co Circuit Clerk and got some bad news. She said that very recently, their office was ordered to ship all the "old" Circuit Court cases to Frankfort and they aren't supposed to become involved in genealogy; people will have to go to Frankfort to see the old records. The dates? 1799-1980's. This is happening in all Ky Circuit Court offices. I have heard a rumor (but have not confirmed) that the same demands will be placed on the County Clerk's office. Our County Clerk's office has, for several years, been photostating all the old deed books, will books, etc. and placing the photocopied books on the shelves - really well done and easier to work with as the books can be opened and individual pages taken to the copy machine. They have also had a young lady working with the marriages. She has been photostating all the old marriages (with all permisison slips, etc) and putting them in a book, indexed, and pulling the original documents from the files. I am 100% supportive of this and they have been trying to get this done for a long time due to the fragility of the old documents and to keep the originals from being lost or stolen. I am trusting that they will be allowed to keep the photo copied documents if they have to send the originals to Frankfort. However, there are a lot of books there I haven't transcribed (or others), including the Order Books (past book 5), etc. I will be checking with them this week to see if this transfer will effect them and how. Supposedly one can write Frankfort and get copies of the old documents but until they are all catalogued or if you have a file number, I'm not sure how this will work. If you're hanging around the house today, Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week, an easy one for a change! If you want to give it a try, click on gensoup in my signature line and give it a try. Have a good day - see you tomorrow! 1. ELZIA & ELIZABETH DOUGLASS ARTERBURN OF MONROE CO KY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I received this week a delightful book that was compiled by one of our list members, Charles Arterburn. I'd like to tell you about it because it might be of interest to some of our readers. Charles did a wonderful job in telling the story of Elzia and Elizabeth Douglass ARTERBURN of Monroe Co and drew from many sources - deeds, wills, marriage records, Methodist Church records, etc obtained frm the KY Methodist Heritage Center, Thomas D Clark Center for Kentucky History, Research Library of the SAR, University of Kentucky Libraries and The William B Harlin Memorial Library in Tompkinsville. Charles covers topics such as On the Waters of Indian Creek, Methodist Love and Charity, Personal Glimpses of Elzia and Elizabeth, the Crisis and Tragedy of War, Aftermath and the Struggle For Unity, Gone but Not Forgotten, Notes, Bibliography, Appendix and Index. He traces from Peter and Sarah Arterburn's son James who migrated to Washington Co TN about 1850 and their son Elzia who married Elizabeth Douglass Arterburn and came to Monroe Co about 1833. His footnotes are covered in the Notes section where Charles has typed out the entire, deed, will or historical citation and the location where he found it. If you are an Arterburn descendant, you might want to contact Charles about this book; it is extremely well done. His email address is: crart02@yahoo.com Charles is a frequent contributor to "Traces", the quarterly of the South Central KY Historical and Genealogical Society. 1. PROGRESS OF MIGRATATION
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. A rare Friday post, but I wanted to update you on the migration of lists on rootsweb. So far, all is going well with a few glitches. The KYBARREN list, KYBIOGRAPHIES and KYRESEARCH lists have been switched over and the SCKY list will be moved on the 6th of Sept. Here are the only differences I've encountered. 1 - you don't need to put the -L in the address anymore when posting which was the way all but the Barren Co list was set up in the first place. The Barren Co list required the -L, but no longer does. The SCKY list will still require the -L until this list is migrated. 2 - On Research and Bios: These are read-only lists which means these lists do not take queries. At the present time, rootsweb hasn't devised a way to keep these closed to posting so I am handling it from this end on a temporary basis. When I make the daily bio post or the weekly tips post, I have it set as "emergency moderation." This means that when I make the post, it will not be sent until I go to a web site and release it. A little extra work for now, but hopefully this will be changed soon. 3 - on KYBARREN: This is a gatewayed list. This means that when someone makes a post to the Barren Co board, it has been cross-posted to the KYBARREN list. This still is happening ... but .... the submitter of the post is receiving an email saying that they have to join the list first. This is not true. I receive the email and again, go to the administrative tools page and release the email. This also is being worked on but will take some time until all the remainder of the lists are migrated. 4 - Once in a while, while the lists were being migrated the mode in which you receive your posts became changed. In other words, if you were on the digest mode it might have gotten switched to the list mode or vice versa. If you notice that you are receiving the daily posts immediately and want to receive the digest mode or vice versa, write me privately and I'll change the settings for you. This will only have to be done once. If you are receiving duplicate posts, let me know that too. If there are temporary glitches, I'll try to get them worked out! Have a wonderful weekend and I'll see you on Monday! 1. From the Gorin Book!
    2. Tom or Betty Dotson Renick
    3. You have plenty of time to plan ... but I promised to send out this information! Sandi Page 55 -- Henry Renick, who lived near the Buck Knob, was the first sheriff of this county. Richard Garnett, from the law establishing this county, could not determine whether he ought to give an official bond as Clerk of the Quarter Session Court. He consulted with his father, Judge John Garnett, and they concluded it would be most prudent to give a bond. Accordingly they prepared and executed one. Renick being a litigious man, and always in debt, concluded he would bring a suit against Garnett to recover the penalty of three hundred pounds, which the law gave for failing to execute a bond. He brought suit against Garnett to recover that penalty, thinking no bond had been given; but greatly to his consternation and disappointment, the court dismissed the suit and made him pay the costs. We have thought proper to give this explanation in order that you may understand the following poetry, composed by Abner Bowen in the year 1799, a copy of which having been sent to us, we now give you in word and figure. "To describe the pike Buck I mean to do Keep truth on my side and modesty too. This stag, I am informed, lives near Buck Knob, And has lately been striving his neighbor to rob. I have sued the Clerk of our County, And three hundred pounds to be my bounty, And if that my debts won't pay, I will distance all and run away." Col.Henry Renick was the infamous brother of my ancestor James Wright Renick b.1776 Va. -You can read what happened to him after he went to Missouri on the Reunion web site page 2. <http://home.att.net/~sy13/Pioneers.html>http://home.att.net/~sy13/Pioneers. html The Renick clan is having a national Reunion July13-15 2007 in Lewisburg WV and we would appreciate your help in posting our web site around the Glasgow area.
