    3. Yes, I love stories like that, Sandi. Had one in one of my lines about a year ago when I found someone in a census record which I know good and well I had checked before. But I just spent time browsing through the original instead of the book transcription. Mike Vance

    1. [SCKY] Two success stories
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. First tho ... the KYBARREN server and the KYBIOGRAPHIES server seem to be down this morning, posts will go out later! There are 2 things I always recommend - take oral history with a grain of salt until it can be proven - and never stop looking - those brick walls can come tumbling down. In one of the cases below, it took 60 or more years; the other over 35 years. Forgive the personal references but I think this will encourage you (forget the length of time it took!). #1. I spent this weekend actually working on my own maternal line, a rarity. One of my dead ends had long been my gggg grandmother, one Dorothy Moody of NH to IL. My genealogically blessed aunt (yes, the one who taught me this biz 36 yrs ago), sent me a book on Unity NH where she was born and some miscellaneous family sheets. This took her back 3 more generations thankfully but ran me into a roadblock. Her ancestors did NOT hook up to their ancestors as shown. I spent hours reading censuses, ancestry.com, Family History, etc. etc and got into old books on the family. Bingo! There was the right line; she was not descended from one John Moody the Emigrant, but from his cousin, William Moody the Emigrant - they appear to have come to America together from England. But, that roused my curiosity. Moody. I remembered a Moody from my younger years - a very famous evangelist who died in 1899 named Dwight L. Moody. Just for the fun of it, I did some web searching and found his pedigree, published by his own family (son and grandson) and lo and behold, he was a descendant of William Moody too and a close cousin to my gggg grandmother, Dorothy. I called my aunt and she said something to the effect that my (Sandi's) grandmother and her mother always told the family that they were related to Dwight L Moody but we always thought it was just a tale of a family wanted to be related to someone famous. The family told this story back in the 1880's but no one bothered to find out if it was true or not. For a change, I didn't throw the baby out with the bathwater! So - do some investigating; the story might have been elaborated on over the years, or changed when passed from ancestor to ancestor - but maybe - just maybe it might be true! #2. Then, I was working on my Dad's family and a stumbling block has always been my ggg grandfather, one David Laughery, who was born "abt 1795 in OH" with his father born in northern Ireland. He is shown in many Logan Co IL records and his wife was always shown as an Elizabeth. On my records I have carried her name as Elizabeth Williams - and doggone it - I haven't the foggiest idea of where I got that name - I didn't document well in my early days. Last night, before calling it a day and quite tired of eyes, I clicked on one more site called Find a Cemetery. None of our families ever made it to sites like that but I typed in Laughery. Laughery can be spelled some 100 different ways - or more. Bingo - there is listed a cemetery that was JUST transcribed in July 2006 by a lady I don't know - on a cemetery I'd never heard up, basically in the back yard of where my Dad grew up - a big one. And there is my David Laughery and his wife. Now I have his full date of birth and problems. His wife was Elizabeth J Birks, not Williams, but I know it is my ggg grandfather. Buried with him is his son Nathan and the wife of my gg grandfather (who is buried in a different cemetery). I went back on the web and did a search for Elizabeth Birks - and there she was, neat as a pin, married to a Thomas David Laughery or Lowery. I wrote her; she just emailed me almost 100 pages of data. They had the Birks but no information on the Laughery - which I have. We have a problem as there are 2 stones there - one for David Laughery born on a certain date and dying on a certain date in 1795. He's ours. Next to it is a stone for Thomas David Laughery born on exactly the same day and month, but dying in 1794. Either a later stone was put up and and the got the year wrong, or the stones were mis-transcribed. The brick wall still has a few bricks standing ... I still can't find his parents or grandparents but from northern Ireland I know he came - the family "castle" is still standing! So this afternoon I'm sorting through wills, deeds and everything the lady sent me and helping her as she helps me. 36 yrs of looking - and I was likely no more than 2 miles from this cemetery when I was back in IL in early August. I'm bribing my aunt to run over there and shoot some pictures for me, but what a find. Don't give up!!!!!!!! 2. Sandi, I hope you don't stop the questions. I look every week and the question and the answer from the previous week and learn something. Most times I don't know the answer and don't have the time to look for it. Don't take the fact that I don't answer to mean that I'm not interested. There are probably plenty of others like me! Pat

"Was borned July 10, 1761. Was borned Feb 5, 1765. Gatewood was borned Dec 21, 1783. Oaths were taken of Fletcher Gatewood and Peter FISHBOURN who say that John Gatewood preceded the first entry and Nancy Gatewood the second entry and Dotia the third entry. There was also entered in the said Bible: John and Ann Gatewood were married Aug 22, 1782 and Fletcher Gatewood further said on oath that his mother, the said Nancy or Ann Gatewood was and now is indifferently called Nancy and Ann. Peter Fishbourn and Wm HATLER swear that they knew John and Nancy many years; they were reputed to be man and wife and knew their oldest child Dotia who appears to be the age stated in the Bible. The leaf of the Gatewood Bible appeared very old, faded, rather torn and badly defaced as though a child had written all over it but one can make out in addition to what had been given, the following: Pamela? Gatewood born Dec 2, 1785 Arstiley? Gatewood born Jan 11, 1788 Roland Gatewood born Apr 12, 1790 Wiley? Gatewood born Sept 16, 1792, died Aug 4, 1806 Richard B Gatewood, born Jan 5, 1795 Marah/Manah? 1. IN CLOSING MONDAY, 11 SEPT 2006 - PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. A day of remembering for Americans - our thoughts and prayers with those who lost family and friends 5 years ago. Today is the day scheduled for the "migration" of this list to the new mailman processor. Hopefully, you will not see any changes on your end; but as with the other lists, it will take me a little time to get everything set up on the administrative end here. The only change you will need to make after the change is that it will no longer be necessary for you to put the -L in the address when you are making a post. I will send out a msg if and when the list is moved to let you know it has been moved. If you have any problem (such as going on the digest mode when you were on list mode or vice versa), write me privately and I'll change it back over. Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week; last week's response netting only a handful of guesses and Charlie has put up the answer. For this week's puzzler, click on the URL in my signature line called gensoup and give it a try. It will take you to a safe website where you can enter your email addy and your guess and hit send. I am the only one who will receive your answer and I'll try to let you know yes or no the same day. See you tomorrow with some more tidbids of Monroe Co history from the 1950's. 1. Unidentified subject!
    2. Charles R. Arterburn
    3. DNA discussions are generally discouraged from the rootsweb lists but Sandi has given me permission to post the following information. If you have any questions, please contact me privately, off-list, to keep a discussion on DNA from getting started on this list. I can be reached at crart02@yahoo.com. An Arterburn DNA Project has been launched at Family Tree DNA with the goal of attempting to determine if Arterburn, Otterburn, or Arthaber surnames/family lines share a common ancestor. The project page can be visited at: http://www.familytreedna.com/(vtiiyz30tywqvl55unef5e45)/public/Arterburn/index.aspx Thanks, Charles R. 1. Google newspapers and books on line.
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I recently learned of google placing thousands of newspapers on line. It was discussed by Eastman in his daily column (get on his list, it's free and it's good). The link to his website is below. http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/google_offers_o.html He explains the new google service and has a link to googlenewspapers. In brief, it's great, but partial. You can do a search for a name and it will give you an abstract of part of the article. To get the entire article, you have to pay $2-5 dollars from the paper it appeared in. Sometimes the abstract gives you a lot of info, something just a blurb. I did a quick search on Gorin - 12,000 some entries and I found a lawsuit in Jefferson Co in 1865, a divorce in the early 1900's, and several other great articles. But, I couldn't afford to order them all - I THINK once you submit payment on line, they'll open up the entire article for you online. I don't like the paying part but it's great to know if someone you're looking for is listed - then it's up to you! Now - another "goodie" Google also has thousands of books on line! Go to: http://books.google.com/ I had to work my way through this one. IF the book is out of copyright, the entire book is there and you can download it to your computer and/or print it off. If it's still under copyright, they will just show you the page(s) where your surname is listed, but many times that is enough. When you do your search (under the box where you type in the surname) you can have it search for ALL references to that name (or location or event likely), or just for the ones that are downloadable. I did my Gorin search and found about 7 hits that I could print off. I didn't need the whole book at this time, just the citation. Some of the books go back to the mid 1800's. Just for your info ... 1. UPDATE
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I just wanted to take a minute and update you on the progress of migrating all the rootsweb lists; it has been rather a confusing time but we're all muddling through. Since many of you are on my other lists, I'll cover them too. KYBIOGRAPHIES was migrated safely. However, until rootsweb gets the time, this "closed list" (not open to queries) has to be moderated so it is not overwhelmed with queries or spam. Once I make a post and send it out, I must go to the administsration pages for the list and "release" the email to the list. This list no longer requires the -L in the address which I had to do temporarily during the switch. KYRESEARCH was migrated safely. Same thing as above. Thank you also for all the kind words on my current series of posts on 20 Lessons Genealogists Need to Know ... this seems to be hitting home with a lot of us! KYBARREN was migrated safely. It no longer requires the -L in the name when you make a post to the list. The KYBARREN board is still "gatewayed" to the list meaning that when one makes a post to the board, it is automatically posted to the list also. Sometimes this does not work and I need to go to the administration site for the list and release the email so it will go to the list. SOUTH-CENTRAL-KENTUCKY was supposed to be switched over on the 6th, but due to the holiday and fixing problems, this migration has been delayed now until the 11th. I'm hoping there will be no problems with it! After the migration, it will not be necessary for any of us to put the -L in the address (which was just temporary during this transition). I have set, on the administration side, the maximum number of "bounces" before one is removed from the list at 5. This means if an email is refused by your server because of various problems 5 times, you will be unsubscribed. This can include things like your mailbox being full, closed accounts, temporary glitches, etc. I set it at 5 (it was set at 4 previously) which hopefully will catch temporary problems which will be solved before your name is removed from the list. Digest vs list mode. As you know, you can subscribe to any rootsweb list in two modes - either digest or list. Digest means that you will receive fewer posts with several emails in one post, rather than receiving each post as it is made. On the list format - you receive the posts as they are sent. Sometimes, in this migration, some have been changed accidentally from one mode to the other. If you are now receiving posts in list mode where you subbed in digest mode or vice versa, let me know and I will switch you back (on all but the SCKY list which hasn't been migrated yet). I think that covers it - for now! There are always problems in such a massive conversion (many of you have worked in the computer/programming field and know this!), but all in all, I think this has gone smoother than I anticipated. No posts tomorrow on Friday so I wish you all a great weekend and if you haven't tried your hand at the puzzler for the week, try it! The response has been very low this week during a long holiday.
