    1. [SCKY] GREEN CO BOOK FAIR
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Found it! The Green County Genealogical Society has set the date for their 4th annual Genealogy Book Fair. It will be November 4th, 2006, 8:30 to 3:00 (central time) at the Green County Fire and Rescue Building. If one of the Green Co people will write me privately, I'll give you more information on who they are expecting this year and directions. It's a lot of fun and some great people and books/supplies. 1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING MONDAY 25 SEPT 2006, PUZZLER & CORRECTION
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. On the previous post on the county farm/poor house, I note I had a typo that I didn't catch in time. Mary Elmore was on the 1900 census, not the 1800. Another sip of coffee time! After a stormy and very wet weekend, with Saturday giving us abundant rain and no phone service, it's time to get back to the genealogy world. Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week and if you'd like to give the question a try, click on the URL in my signature line called gensoup and see if you know the answer. Several have asked me; there will be no book fair in Glasgow this year. There were too many counties that were unable to participate due to a variety of reasons so I have decided to cancel. Green Co will be hosting their book fair the first Saturday in November and hopefully some of you will be able to attend. I will provide additional information in a few days - this is a great event and I hope to be able to see some of you there. 1. [SCKY] Jackson County Site
    2. I would like to address a problem brought to my attention: "Several years ago, I submitted information on my families in Jackson County, including marriages, births, and deaths, but they were never input. Looking through the records today on the revamped site, it seems that there are only records that have been submitted by you and two or three other people. Is that all the people that have tried to submit items or are other people not allowed to submit things?" First of all, Carol and I accept any and all information from anyone who is willing to donate it. We apologize if anyone has felt otherwise. Whether that information is just a picture or two, a family tree or biography, we are not picky and do not discriminate. We are always happy with everything we receive from you and don't care who you are, as long as what you send is accurate to the best of your knowledge. For all of you who have donated information in the past, please take a moment to visit the Jackson County site. If your information cannot be found, please let Carol or I know. We cannot stress enough how much the site relies on all of you out there and your generosity with your family information. 3. MORGAN: John, 12 hrs, s/o Asa & Louisa KEY (Buckingham Co VA-Hart), 10 Aug 1876. Note - it could have been John Morgan KEY??? Written strangely. This is probably John Morgan Key... On another death entry I have the following: Key, Henry M. July 26, 1874 Asa & Louisa 1 day. Parents b. Ky. Premature. Also shown as 8 mos. Old. Guess it's a little hard to prove they were of the same family...and apparently the register gives the parents birthplace different in both entries but thought I'd throw this out as a help in identifying John. ~Carol

    1. [SCKY] Update to my brickwall tumblings
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I meant to write this yesterday but I've had a couple of hectic days and have been away from the computer. My next lesson for you all! If something doesn't seem right, dig it to death until you figure it out! I told you about the site I found on the web called Find A Grave with the transcription of a Bowers-Templeman Cemetery in Logan Co IL - where was supposedly buried my ggg grandfather, David Laughery; a Thomas David Laughery with almost identical dates and "our" David's wife with a middle name of Birks on the stone. Well ... it wasn't so. I wrote to a lady who tied in with this line and the next morning she emailed me 69 pages of family data - and it was all on our family - down to almost the present generation. It was in depth and accurate, more than I'd had time to check. She told me that she was not at all sure that her Elizabeth Birks's marriage was to our Thomas LOWRY/LAUGHERY, but was going to leave it until disproved. I looked at her documentation on this first part and there was no way. Wrong kids, wrong dates, wrong everything - except when she traced from our David on down. I wrote to the gal who posted the cemetery records and she was thrilled - she had transcribed the data in the cemetery herself I thought. But something was sticking in my craw as they used to say back in IL. Too much of a supposition. I KNEW the David was ours and Elizabeth was his wife. But the Birks part didn't jive - and I wasn't totally ready to get rid of her as Elizabeth Williams. And - who was Thomas David??? So - I called my guru aunt in Lincoln; she had a complete and very accurate transcription of the cemetery and had been there (and was back there today for me). Guess what? There is NO Thomas David Laughery stone, only our David. And, Elizabeth's stone said "wife of D L Laughery" - it did not say Birks anywhere. Other family members of ours were there that were not shown on the webpage. One of our listers wrote me too; he had a transcription of the cemetery - no Thomas, no Birks. (Thank you again!) I contacted the list owner of the Logan Co IL website; a native of the same area of my family - and a distant cousin; she knew everyone in that cemetery it seemed and she told me the same thing - no Thomas, no Birks. So I wrote to the lady who sent me all the information on my family and she was sweet about it; she had this knawing feeling too that her family had just copped on to ours to solve a puzzle for them. The Birks family was in the area, but are buried in other cemeteries. I wrote back to the lady who transcribed the information - asking her if she had physically copied the cemetery or had gotten the information from someplace else. I explained that the transcription was in error - and she was related to the Birks also. She did not write me back. Today my aunt and uncle shot pictures of the cemetery and everyone of our kin there and I'll have the pictures by Monday or Tuesday. I've placed post-it notes on the websites that hook these families together but I don't know if it'll do any good. What I learned? (1) where my ggg grandfather and wife were buried. (2) where my gg grandfather's first wife is buried and her maiden name (she was from Canada). (3) where several other of my missing ancestors are buried, (4) not to believe everything and to question everything. When names and dates don't match and you know the children's names - when it's too good to be true - it might not be. I've enjoyed all the success stories that were posted. It takes guts sometimes to keep pushing, asking, tossing out, accepting, deleting, and adding but it feels good when a mystery is pretty well solved! 1. [SCKY] Calculus Kills
    2. Doug Moore
    3. This Fall I am teaching a section of the first semester calculus course at ASU. A young lady stopped by my office after the first test to seek my help. "Why did I do so poorly", she asked. After looking at her test paper, I suggested that she was not prepared for the course and should drop back to the algebra and trig course. She thought about it, but decided to stay with the calculus course. "If I work hard", she said, "I may be able to pass. It won't kill me to try!" She might not have been so bold had she known of the fate of poor Henry Donaldson. The link below will take you to a page from the Warren Co mortality schedule of 1880. On line 28 you will find young Henry Donaldson, who died in March 1880. 1. Re: [SCKY] SOUTH-CENTRAL-KENTUCKY Digest, Vol 1, Issue 3
    2. I have recently found on the Internet some information that I am trying to check out. I was wondering if anyone can help? Long story short: I found listed a James Martin that died in Barren County on Sept. 13, 1848. I've checked SCKY archives and have found a handful of Martin's listed in Will Book 3 (which would include 1848) but no James. I've e-mailed the person who posted the info. but have not heard back yet. They have listed three children for this James: John D. born 1803, Mary Ann born 1824 and Merideth born 1831. There's a large gap in years... I think my connection is the John D. born 1803, although I've never seen him with the middle letter D. only J. The information goes on to list John's children's name which is almost the exact info. that I have. With having an exact date of death for James, I'm wondering if perhaps, I should be looking somewhere else other than the Will books. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Chrystal

    3. I caught this today and a couple others did too. In the past, when you replied to an email on the list, the email went to the poster. I hadn't noticed, but when the migration took place, it was pre-set to go to the list instead. I just made the change and now, if you reply to someone, it will go to them and not to the list - the way it should be! Tomorrow - another story about my interesting find of this weekend - and verification of another rule I always try to follow - quite interesting and I think you will be helped. Thanks for all the neat emails of your own encouraging triumphs - we all need to hear good news! The KYBARREN and KYBIOS server is still down - hopefully by tomorrow! In her book a very short paragraph address's Callum Holman Bailey son Jesse Bailey and his marriage to Elizabeth Mattox Woodson of Va. They left Barren Co. in 1811 after marriage and moved to Clarksville Tenn. In May 2006 I found the cemetery of Jesse and the land where his 400 ac plantation existed. Since then I have found living descendants of Jesse and Elizabeth and we are sharing our research findings. Callam Holman Bailey was an American Rev. War patriot and is honored fro his service on a plaque on the Barren co Ky courthouse square. 3. Okay, Brec. I do indeed show Carlton Nunn, son of John Nunn and Susannah Southard, to have been born 26 Oct, 1808 and died on 8 Nov 1864 in Lincoln Co, MO. I have him married to Permelia Holloway in Caswell Co, NC in 1836. But I sure don't have much else on him and nothing on his family. And like you, I don't show a primary source for him either. I must have had this for years since I didn't take good notes. I think I will spend a few minutes browsing some census records before I leave for the Astros game. I look forward to exchanging info. 3. Had one myself not too long ago. I had a Calton Nunn in Lincoln County MO. Listed in the transcript of the cemetery as born in 1811 (he was listed as so many years months and days old at death). I suspected that he was the same man as Carlton Nunn listed in many trees as born in 1808 in NC. (The month and day of birth for the two men were very close). Not too long ago I shared a treasure trove of pictures on the Nunn board. I recieved a reply from a man who had a drawing of Calton and his wife and he had met Calton's grandaughter and found that her Great Grandfather and g grandmother were the same as the parents of the Carlton Nunn listed in dozens of family trees. Still need documentation if it can be gotten but at least I have a second hand confirmation. Brec
