Chuck Despain wrote me and gave me permission to forward his request to the list. He is not on either of the lists, so if you would like to contact him, please write him privately. I hope you can hellp him. Sandi cdespain@cwnet.com Hi Sandi, I have been studying the DeSpain name for about 10 years. Do to new information I am trying to find out when James DeSpain (Spain) lived in Cumberland or Monroe Co, KY. James married Margaret Matthews 6 Sep 1807 in Cumberland Co, KY. It is known that this James is in the 1811 Green Co,KY tax list. However it has been learned that there is another James DeSpain in Green County in the 1810s and the two can not be separated. This James Despain (Listed as James Spain.) is in the 1820 Monroe Co, KY census living among his in-laws. By the 1830 census he is in the Shelby Co, TN listed as J. D. Spain. I would like to know if he can be found in Cumberland or Monroe County records for any of the years between 1811 and 1830. Chuck Despain
As I think I've told you, all the old Circuit Court cases that were housed here at the clerk's office have been sent to Frankfort for storage. They will eventually be available there but it will require a trip to Frankfort to the Dept of Archives and Libraries to see them. The late dear Gladys Benedict Wilson gave me hundreds and hundreds of cases that she had transcribed from the oldest of the Circuit Court cases and over the years I have been trying to get them all typed up and published. I have just finished Volume 9 of the series, leaving likely one more book to come. This volume has 32 cases, ranging from 1809 to 1877 (only 3 cases after 1858) and includes land disputes, slave settlements, murder, patent disputes, a problem with a raffle for a watch, a lunacy hearing, fights over horses, bad bookkeeping at a mercantile and many other cases - including a gal who couldn't handle her late husband's children, her children and disobedient slaves. Among the cases are: John Forbis vs Clement Lee; Wm Jewell vs John Crozier; Jesse Thomas vs Benjamin Eaves, Jesse Rowland & Hudson Martin vs Leonard Garmon, Thomas Staton vs Zacharah Emerson, Richard Mitchell vs James Jeffries, David Richardson vs Elizabeth M Richardson, Obadiah Wade vs William B Wade & William Holder, Lewis Smith vs Harlow & Kimble, J B Jamison vs Jno Garrison, Jose Philpot vs John Gum, Polly Threlkill vs Edmunds, Solon Thacker, Lorenzo D Peck for keeping the peace, F F Holder vs A Holder, Malachai Francis (lunacy), John Francis vs Francis, Martin, Bridges & Beam, Joseph Warder vs Warder & Evans, James Whitlow (murder), Leonard Edlin vs James Morgan Heirs, Jefferson Fulcher vs James Gillock, Frances Wheeler vs Rigdons, Jeff Stone vs Rufus McPherson, John Dickerson vs Valentine Dickerson, John McDaniel vs John C Hall, Sebert Wilson vs Glovesr, Ritter, Wooten & Goodal, and M Delph vs Presley Self and the Monroe heirs. These cases are interesting not only in testimonies, but all the known heirs (and their locations) are usually shown. If you would like to see the index of this book, I again will send it to you via a Word document if you will ask - write me privately, I cannot send it on the list as rootsweb strips off attachments to prevent viruses from getting through. I am trying to locate as many of the Old Finney School group pictures as possible. I attended this school from about 1953/1954 - 1957 at which time it was closed and we were then were bussed to Red Cross Elementary for grades 1-6 and Park City for the 7th grade through high school. I had six older brothers who also attended Finney School and would love to hear from anyone who may have knowledge of/or how I might obtain copies of same. I am guessing the oldest dates would be abt.1931 through about abt.1946. I have two brothers who are deceased, James Richard Nuckols b.2 Oct.,1927 and Kelly Mitchell Nuckols b.12 Apr.,1931. We were the only NUCKOLS family to ever live in Finney as far as I know. I would really appreciate anything you would like to share about the school. Thank you in advance, Judy Nuckols Lowe Barren Co KY
Anne, This may not be useful, but in the interests of full disclosure wanted to add: Last year, I had occasion to read through 38 years (1845-1883) of quarterly conference minutes of the Tompkinsville Circuit of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for some research I was doing. These conference meetings were attended mostly by the clergy and lay officers of the Circuit, and these were the names most likely to be listed. I don't recall ever seeing William Howard's name mentioned. This presents several possibilities: 1. Howard could have been a Methodist, but not an elder or preacher or steward. 2. He could have been performing marriages as a JP rather than as a clergyman. 3. He could have been a Methodist clergyman, but have left the M.E. Church, South at the time of the 1845/46 split over slavery. The William Howard who freed his slaves in 1846 in Monroe County might fit this scenario. 4. He may not have been a Methodist at all, but a Baptist or Church of Christ (Campbellite) clergyman instead. I hope you'll share with us your findings, if you do eventually turn-up the truth about William Howard! best wishes, Charles R. I really appreciate everyone's help on this. Thank you very much. I think I have found some good leads. Ann > >
Ann, Kathy and list- I believe that William and Christopher Howard are very likely sons of Obediah Howard and Priscilla Avery Breed who are reported by other researchers to have been married about 1758 in Orange County, North Carolina. William was born March 4, 1772 and Christopher in 1774. Their older sister, Nancy, said to have been born October 16, 1759, was married to the Rev. Jonathan Mulkey. Nancy and Jonathan were the parents of the Revs. John and Phillip Mulkey who were born while in Fair Forest, South Carolina where their grandfather Phillip Mulkey had established an early Baptist Church. They are the Mulkeys who established early churches in Kentucky and central Tennessee. John is associated with the historic Mulkey Meeting House now in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky and Phillip established the Brimstone Church just across the border in Jackson County, Tennessee. There is a great deal of information on the web about the Mulkeys and the Restoration Movement in North Caroli! na, Sou th Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Here is one summary of early family information: In the fall of 1759 Stephen Howard (son of Joseph, Onslow)(who was son of John Howard, Esq., Blue Creek Onslow Co. N.C.)...and his family left Orange County, N.C. with a traveling Baptist missionary group under leadership of Shubal Stearns and Phillip Mulkay, members of the Deep River and Sandy Creek congregations and went in South Carolina, stopping first at Little River, where they formed a church. In 1762 several families under the leadership of Philip Mulkey, their minister, moved again and settled in Craven County, S.C. on branches of Fairforest Creek and Tyger River, in present "Union Co." S.C. where they established a church, and entered claims for land. According to church histories, these heads of families were: Stephen Howard and Wife Obadiah Howard and wife (son or nephew of above Stephen) (wife Priscilla Breed) Philip Mulkey and wife (Anna Ellis, dau. of Jeremiah Ellis of Lunenburg Co., Va.) Joseph Breed and wife (Priscilla Avery, dau. of Christopher Avery of Groten, Conn. Jos, Breed of Stonington, Conn. and Groten, Conn. Benjamin Gist and Wife (Mary Jarrett, dau. of Thomas Jarrett of Lunenberg Co. Va.) Charles Thomson Thomas Thomson Rachel Collins All these persons had lived before 1759 in Orange Co. N.C. for a few years, and their names appear on the tax lists of this county, with the exception of Obadiah Howard, who may have been too young to have entered claim for land at that time and date. The tax lists of Orange Co. N.C. in 1761 show the names of Edmund Howard, Nehemiah Howard, Nathaniel, and John Howard . Of those, Nehemiah Howard later moved to the Fairforest settlement in South Carolina and took up land near Stephen and Obadiah Howard and their neighbors. Stephen (2) Howard wrote the first will filed in present Union County, SC dated Dec. 24, 1777. Date of probate is not shown. As Union Co. SC was not organized until 1785, it can be assumed that he died in that year, as otherwise it would have been filed in Charleston, SC with other county records of the period before formation of Union County. Rev. Jonathan Mulkey moved from South Carolina to Buffalo Ridge, Tennessee where he headed a congregation for years but his sons and members of the Howard and Gist families were very early settlers in Barren/Green County, Kentucky and adjacent Jackson County, Tennessee. I hasten to point out that I am not a Howard researcher but I know a good deal about the Mulkeys and the migration of families from Camden and Pendleton Districts in South Carolina to south centrasl Kentucky and Tennessee. >Kathy, > Thank you for your response. I wish I knew the answers to your questions. You did not mention your Hardy Howard ever being in Barren or Monroe Counties. Researching the ministers made sense. Thank you for that suggestion. I looked on the Barren County GenWeb site under Barren County Land Grants to find the time frame of the ministers you mentioned. If William Howard was about 20 (just a presumption) in 1816 then he would be in his 40s when he married James P. CONKIN and Hannah H. DICKERSON making him a good candidate for being the brother of Harriet HOWARD. Rev. John Longdon, - I think the listing below may be the same man. Logsdon Jno 200 22 6-27-1804 Green River Rev. John Mulkey, - Mulkey John 50 P 4-21-1819 None Rev. Jacob Chism.... - Chism Jacob 50 A 1- 9-1816 Gills Creek Wiliam Howard, - Perhaps the William Howard referred to below are two different men - two different generations. Howard William 100 B 3- 8-1816 Fk Big Howard Wm 200 5 9- 1-1799 E Fk Big River Howard Christopher 150 7 11- 9-1804 E Fk Big River Rev. Philip Mulkey - Mulkey Philip 76 23 3- 7-1808 Mill Creek I found Harriet Howard when I was researching my Hannah H. DICKERSON line. Hannah was born about 1825 in Kentucky and died in 1904 in Gainesville, Ozark County, Missouri. At this point, I do not know who Hannah's parents are. When I found a marriage on the Barren County GenWeb site for a "DICKESON, James to HOWARD, not given, 30 Jan 1816," I checked Rootsweb World Connect database and found a file which indicated the "HOWARD, not given" was a Harriet HOWARD and the DICKESON (sp?), James was James DICKERSON, son of Solomon DICKERSON. Now I never take World Connect files as gospel, but I figure if the person who listed the information found that information, then so can I - if I can't then I go back to ground zero. The interesting thing about this find and what makes it plausible in my research is James Patterson CONKIN and Hannah H. DICKERSON named their first child, a daughter, HARRIET CONKIN, born 28 July, 1839 in Kentucky. This could mean that Hannah was following a normal naming pattern of naming her first daughter after her mother. Also Hannah's middle initial is H. which could stand for Harriet (her mother) or Holland the maiden name of her great grandmother, Hannah HOLLAND who was married to Surratt DICKERSON. Now if William HOWARD is the father or brother of Harriet HOWARD Dickerson (she married in 1816 so she was probably about 20 years old), it would make sense for him to marry his niece or granddaughter. Are any of you researching these families? Any help would be very much appreciated. One last tidbit on the Dickerson Family: | 18-03-1835 | Hix James | Dickerson Mary R | Howard, William | Maybe Hannah and Mary are sisters. Thanks again for any help. I read this on another list, ADVRES and checke dit out - I like it. As you know, our names could have really have been clobbered in spelling on older records. Even the shortest names could end up with unknown variants of spellings - depending on how they wrote the name, how it was heard by others and the nationality. Then was introduced soundex to help us and I really hate it. It serves its purpose I know but as an example with the name Gorin - it brings up Green (of which there are millions) and many others that I don't need. Metaphone is another system - so so. Then there is Thesaurus at http://www.namethesaurus.com/Thesaurus/Search.aspx This is a site that I'm just starting to investigate but it looks good. When you enter a name, it will give you the Thesaurus names (which SOUND like your surname), and also shows the soundex and the metaphone. As an example again for the name Gorin - soundex comes up with 1816 possible matches (99% of which are of no use); Metaphone has 1944 possibilities - again, not much of a help - and Thesaurus has 177 names - the majority of wish would be variant spellings of Gorin or sound alikes. Some I would never have thought to search for. It also shows you what "it" thinks is the match score - or the possibility of that being an alternate spelling with the highest percentage at the top. You might enjoy trying this out. Have a great weekend; we're supposed to have a 70% chance of freezing rain tomorrow/Sunday too. Re: [SCKY] William Howard Ann, William Howard may have been a Methodist. I don't have documentation for it, but some circumstantial evidence suggests this: 1. Howard performed marriages for some known Methodists in Monroe County. Whether he was acting as a minister of the gospel or justice of the peace, I'm not sure. (Paper form of published Monroe County marriage records by Marcella Headrick might indicate this, as would the original records.) 2. Isaac Dickerson, who lived in District #1 (Turner District) near Jeffrey and Mud Lick communities, was a licensed Local Preacher (LP) of Bethel Methodist Church, at old Pikeville--the community that later became known as Flippin--during the 1850/60s. Isaac may have been a relative of Hannah. 3. A "William Howard," who built the "Old Brick" house near Emberton, KY, on County House Road (Hwy 1366), freed his slaves in 1846, around the time that the Methodist Episcopal Church split over the slavery issue (1845)--if this was the same William Howard, as seems likely. http://kentucky.gov/kyhs/hmdb/MarkerSearch.aspx?mode=County&county=86 Hope this helps. best wishes, Charles R. A little of this 'n that... If you are are on the KYBIOGRAPHIES and/or KYRESEARCH lists, your posts from me might be delayed. They are "housed" on what is know as List3 and this server has been having some problems. It locks up somehow - a techie term I have no idea of what it means. These two lists are "read-only" lists meaning they do not take queries. With the recent changes in rootsweb, I now have to go to an administrative page and release the messages to go to all of you. Somehow List3 locks up and won't let me (and others) in to do anything. So bear with me please - I've made the posts - they're just behind locked doors right now! Secondly, thanks for all the updates on those of you who are stuck in the winter storm misery. I promise not to complain that it's 26 degrees in beautiful south central KY! Our thoughts and prayers are with you. On the KYRESEARCH list (whenever it gets unstuck!) there are some interesting tips and data coming up in the next few weeks. I'm sharing about some of the speciality mills that existed in the early days of KY and employed a lot of our ancestors, there are some strange mills of which you might not have heard. There is an eerie post on the Black Mariah, one on the first constitution of KY, another one on what was the militia in KY - what was it, what did they do, etc. If you're not on this once-a-week list you can subscribe by sending an email to KYRESEARCH-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com. Thirdly, I will be going back to Monroe Co on the Tues posts with more of the newspapers. Lastly, thanks for the input on the obituaries I'm posting on the Barren Co board. Please remember something. If it is posted on the Board, it is automatically cross-posted to the Barren Co list here. But, posts to the Barren Co list are NOT cross posted to the board. So, if you have information on something I (or anyone) has posted on the board - no one will see the information on the board if you post it just to the list. It needs to be posted to the board site. Hope I haven't confused you! If you are overwhelmed with the 10 or so obituaries I post almost daily ... let me know and I can switch you to the digest mode of the list so you will get only 1-2 digests a day instead of individual posts. Stay warm! Sandi SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
