This Thursday night, 22 Feb, our South Central Ky Historical & Genealogical Society meeting will be held at 7 pm, at the South Central Ky Cultural Center. Our speaker will be the charming Jimmie Lowe who will put on an interesting program. Jimmie, who is know by about everyone in the area, is a columnist for the Glasgow Daily Times, author, humorist, teacher ... we are really looking forward to his presentation. There is no charge for attendance, lots of free parking. If all goes well, next month we will have Lynwood Montell as our speaker - he is a gifted author of folk lore, professor emeritus from Western KY University. I have heard Lynwood many times - he has many books on superstitions, hauntings, music of this area, a wonderful book of interviews from the old time lawyers in south central KY and their strangest cases and is soon to release a book of interviews on the old-time doctors. Lynwood is much in demand as a speaker and loves to kid me as a former Yankee who knew nothing about the superstitions of this area! Other speakers coming this year include Scotty Fife speaking on the Confederate Soldiers in the Barren Co area; Joy Lyons with some fascinating updates on Bell's Tavern in Park City and others. If you're in the area - come out and join us! We meet every 4th Thursday night of the month except July (our picnic to which all are invited), November (Thanksgiving meeting) and we don't meet in December. Keep searching for your ancestors - I know many of you are under the weather with various flu bugs and colds - so am I - we're ready for spring so get well! Just a guess, mind you, but could the original, which looked like death by "tight loving" actually have said "tight lung"?? Asthma? Some other medical condition involving pulmonary failure? As I said, just a guess. Nonetheless, I'd rather think it actually was as transcribed. Maybe there would be an exotic ancestral story after all…. The Southern Kentucky Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, February 19 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held on the first floor of the Kentucky Building on the campus of Western Kentucky University. There is visitor parking available in the lot adjacent to the building and also across the street. This month's speaker will once again be the professional genealogist and lecturer, Mark Lowe. Mark will be continuing last month's series of lectures on genealogy with the topic, "Government Claims and Unusual Military Pensions." He will include many case studies which should help you in applying the topic to your own genealogical research. We hope you will join us for an evening of learning and congeniality. I have been trying to track down my gg-great-grandmother. Her name was Sarah Elizabeth Peters Turner. She went by Elizabeth, Lizzie and E.P. She was born Aug. 1841, Monroe Co. Ky. Im wondering if anyone can help me with the following Elizabeths? I havent seen actual census info., only whats online at Monroe Co. site. I havent seen 1870 census info. 1850 Monroe Co. There are three Elizabeths Im interested in. (1) 9 year old Elizabeth in the household of Jefferson and Mary Turner. (2) 11 year old Elizabeth in the household of Elizabeth Kirkpatrick (Ive done a little research on this line and found her maiden name to be Gee.) (3) 10 year old Elizabeth in the household of Robert J. and Elizabeth Turner. 1860 (1)The closest to the Jefferson Turner family I can find is J.J. Turner with a 17 year old Elizabeth in the household. (2) 20 year old Elizabeth in Elizabeth Kirkpatricks household. (3) 20 year-old Elizabeth in Robert Turners household. The earliest known child of Elizabeths was born Jan. 1863. She married John Akin (Fitz) Gerald, unknown marriage date. I have a copy of Elizabeths death certificate and parents are listed as James M.O. Turner and Elizabeth Webb. I have gotten nowhere trying to find these parents. So Im trying other names just in case the death cert. is wrong. In 1850, there are three James Turners: 30 year old James Turner, no female children in household. (but there is a 6 year gap between two male children). A 28 year old James Turner one male child in household and a 31 year old James M. with a 6 month old Sarah. In 1860 there are two 41 year old James Turners with no matching females. I know this quey is long, but I must add that the names of Elizabeth Turner Fitzgeralds first three known children are as follows: James T. (Turner?), Robert Jennings and John Gee Gerald. I mention this because of naming patterns. Any help would be appreciated, Chrystal B. Talbott
I sent this a couple of hours ago but for some reason wasn't delivered to either list - so try, try again! Before toddling back to bed to shake the flu, I thought you might be interested in this abstract from today's Rootsweb Review. I went to the site and am so pleased. Here is the abstract: "The official Nationa Park Service website honoring veterans of World War II This website is connected to the World War II Memorial that opened 29 April 2004 on the mall in Washington, D.C.--right between the famous Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Memorial. Unknown to mostAmericans, there are very few surviving records concerning World War II veterans--most of them where lost in a storage warehouse fire decades ago. The government has records on service men who died during the war, but almost no records on who fought and survived the war. This site allows family members to register their veterans by following simple guidelines posted on the site. It is free to register veterans. The only cost is $10 if you would like to upload a picture of the veteran to the site. The site can be accessed and searched by anyone from either the Internet or from a kiosk right a the Memorial in Washington, D.C. Except for registering at this website, there is no other way that their service will be officially remembered as the records are gone. We are losing hundreds of veterans every day. Their sacrifices for our freedoms were and still are important. It is very important to not let those sacrifices be forgotten after they are gone. "To register a World War II veteran or to look one up, go to http://wwiimemorial.com and follow the simple instructions. You will need to know their full name, their home state, and something about when, what branch (Army, Navy, etc.), and where they served. Your submission will be reviewed and needs to be approved before it is posted to the site. To upload a picture for $10 you will need a credit card. Pass the word. Most people have no idea there are no surviving government records of World War II servicemen who lived through the war. It is a simple, but meaningful way to say thank you." >From Sandi: This is a free site and as noted, there is no charge for honoring a veteran of WWII - only if you want to put out a picture is there any cost. No charge for searches. There is a search function on the main page so you can check for any family member or friend who served; if found, it will bring up a list (I searched by surname), which has the name of the soldier, who registered them. Click on the link and another lovely page comes up with the name of the soldier, branch of service, hometown, honored by, and activity during WWII. I found several of our family there. Enjoy - Sandi SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/

Sandi, Thank you for letting us know about Jim. Although I never met him in person, he was the first genealogist I corresponded with when starting to research my Poor line and I will always appreciate his time and willingness to help. I am so sorry to hear of his death. My thoughts and prayers are also with his family and friends. It is with great sadness that I announce that our dear friend, Jim Poore, died Sunday morning. He had been fighting cancer for some time and his death will leave a great void in the lives of his family and all his multitude of friends on this list. Jim was a long-time subscriber to SCKY and other lists, maintained web sites, and helped people constantly. His friendship meant a lot to my family as we were blessed to have met he and his sweet wife Judy. He was an avid genealogist, had a wonderful sense of humor, and a willingness to do all he could to help others, as well as being active with his church and being with a singing group - he had a wonderful voice. Our sympathy to Judy and family; you will be in our thoughts and prayers and we share your loss. Sandi SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
