Hoping someone on the list can tell me if an entry in Sandi Gorin's "Monroe County Vital Statistics, Vol. 2, relating to a death of a William Butler on 5 Jan 1852 is the husband of Josephine and son of James. Entry is as follows: age 56, male, married, tavern keeper, MC, MC, MC (born-lived-died), parents not shown, suicide. This man would fit nicely with Wm., son of James and Fanny Ussery, except for the born in MC part.......I've seen a 1854 death date for him too but was in IL. Anyone know for sure?
Mary on the list alerted me to the following site which has a great little write-up on Barren Co and about 8 photos of our countryside and people. For those of you whose ancestors came from here or you've been wanting a visit - take a look! This is why we love it! I have not read this book yet but have been corresponding with the author. I'm anxious to get a copy and thought some of you might be interested also! Karolyn Smardz Frost is a Toronto-born archaeologist and historian whose 1985 excavation of the Thornton and Lucie Blackburn site made history. I've Got a Home in Glory Land is the fruit of more than twenty years of historical detective work into this fugitive slave couple's dramatic escape to Canada via the Underground Railroad. Karolyn is the Executive Director of the Ontario Historical Society. She divides her time between her Collingwood, Ontario, home and an oceanfront cottage on Nova Scotia's South Shore. Synopsis of the book: "It was the day before Independence Day, 1831. As his bride, Lucie, was about to be "sold down the river" to the slave markets of New Orleans, young Thornton Blackburn planned a daring-and successful-daylight escape from Louisville. But they were discovered by slave catchers in Michigan and slated to return to Kentucky in chains, until the black community rallied to their cause. The Blackburn Riots of 1833 was the first racial uprising in Detroit history. The couple was spirited across the river to Canada, but their safety proved illusory. In June 1833, Michigan's governor demanded their extradition. The Blackburn case was the first serious legal dispute between Canada and the United States regarding the Underground Railroad. The impassioned defense of the Blackburns by Canada's lieutenant governor set precedents for all future fugitive-slave cases. The Blackburns settled in Toronto and founded the city's first taxi business. But they never forgot the millions who still suffered in slavery. Working with prominent abolitionists, Thornton and Lucie made their home a haven for runaways. The Blackburns died in the 1890s, and their fascinating tale was lost to history. Lost, that is, until a chance archaeological discovery in a downtown Toronto school yard brought the story of Thornton and Lucie Blackburn again to light." It's a real Kentucky story and the information about the lives of fugitive slaves Thornton and Lucie Blackburn came largely from historical societies, courthouses, libraries, archives and other repositories in Kentucky. First - a note on my post about the census sites with additional info I posted last night. When you get to the page, spin down a bit - the first spot to enter names is for ancestry.com. Go on down the page to try your searching! In emailing with David yesterday re my posts on the Black soldiers of the Civil War - I noted that the dates of enlistment and discharge weren't shown. Well, they are, but when I printed off the chart he sent me - something about Excel - it just showed x's. He sent me the list in a different format and I'm going to give you the dates as I know this is helping some. I will just show the name and two dates. Of course, the dates are in the 1800's! David P. Shaffner" <dshaff@bellsouth.net) has done all of us a major favor, and worked very hard in the process. Even if you are not researching African American roots, what he has compiled will show much information as to the slave owners, etc. His data came from a scan of the USCT files newly posted by ancestry.com. These names were located by entering "Barren" as a key word search. The one thing they all have in common is their enlistment papers indicate they were born in Barren County, Kentucky. Divid did not extract the names of military officials, although they are replete with the names of recruiting officers, some medical officers etc.A few explanations: HA = Heavy Artillery. LA = Light Artillery Mustering out place doesn't always indicate where the individual actually phycially left the service. All the Devalls Bluff musters probably were physically done somewhere in Kentucky. The documents were all sent to Devalls Bluff Arkansas for processing by the War Department.Where an application for compensation by the slave owner was filed, David tried to extract all the names, including the name of the notary, the two witnesses required for the proof of loyalty affidavitt, and the two witnesses required for proof of ownership. The compensation allowable was $ 300. None of the documents indicate the outcome of the submissions. There is much that can be written as to why these men enlisted and fought bravely for their country. I will begin with a post to follow of the information that David abstracted from these records of Barren Co. I will continue at a regular schedule, there is a lot of information for each soldier. I hope this will be of interest! Sandi SCKY Links: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/Gorin.html GGP: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
Carol Stinson of our list informed me that she lost her father, Ransom Hall, Tues. Feb. 20th. He was born and raised in Pulaski County and was a member of the Kentucky Colonels. The family moved to Ind. in 1951 and her father retired after working 33 yrs. at Chrysler Corp. They still have many family and friends in southern KY. Our condolences in her loss. I just finished Circuit Court recods #10; attempting to get all of Gladys Benedict Wilson's old records transcribed! There are 26 cases arranged chronologically from 1813 through 1849. These cases include charges of stealing, buying land before of legal age, lunacy and many land and slave disputes in re settling estates - dividing the land and slaves among the heirs. They are interesting in many ways including naming of the heirs, who they married, where they moved - and that these records are no longer available locally. As usual, if you would like to see a copy of the index, write me privately and I will attach a copy of the index as an attachment.
