News tidbits from Metcalfe Co. Mr H S Vanzant and wife, of Edmonton, were visiting the family of Mr E W Duff, Coral Hill, last week.(30 Dec 1897) Mr Harrison West, of Savoyard, Metcalfe county, is dangerously ill with a complication of diseases. Mr. West is a half-brother to the late Mr. D F West, and brother-in-law of Messrs J W & I A Pedigo, of this place. (30 Dec 1897). From Smiths Cross Roads: We learn that Mr. Moses Martin and Mrs Eliza Nance, of Cedar Flat neighborhood were married yesterday. Mr. Cam McPherson, Jr., is assisting his brother, Mr. George McPherson, in his store and post office at this place. Cam, by his friendly and accommodating manners, will make a successful salesman and will be popular wherever here. Mr. E Witty has purchased a tract of land from Rousseau Amyx. This tract contains 75 acres and lies adjoining Mr. Witty's large farm on Marrowbone Creek. He now owns over 500 acres, containing a large amount of bottom land. Mr. P D Knipp has received a telephone message that his brother, Mr. James Knipp, of Burkesville, is very low with paralysis. Mr. Ed Garman, The Times correspondent, has closed his school at Good Luck and returned to reside with his parents, near Waterview. Mr. Ben Shirley Jr will, in a few days, move from his farm on the Horse Cave Road to Mr. E Witty's farm on Marrowbone. (first line missing ...)of Dr. Lindsay Watson, died at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. J. B. Harvey, on Marrowbone creek, December 17, and was buried in the Summershade Cemetery on the 18th. Though the weaver [weather] was extremely severe a large congregation gathered to attend the burial services, which were conducted by Rev M P Branstetter. Mrs. Watson died at the advanced age of seventy-seven. Her husband died twelve years ago. Her long life was full of kindness and hospitality. She raised a family of one son and four daughters - Dr. M. L. Watson, of Summershade; Mrs N W Tudor, of near Summershade; Mrs J B Harvey, Willow Shade; Mrs Holman of Perkins, of Hart county, and Mrs Wesley Williams, of Sumner county, Kansas. In the early history of Summershade, this family filled a very important place in the social life of the town. Mrs Watson was a sincere friend of religion and of the church. She especially extended her hospitality of minister of the Gospel and all workers in any good cause, and in her death the church loses a good and useful friend, whose place it will be hard to fill. She was a member of the Methodist church, and the way worn itinerate preacher always found a warm welcome in her home. The sorrow which her death causes her children and relatives is also deeply felt by the community in genera. (27 Dec 1897). From Summer Shade: Miss Maude Mitchell and Mrs Emma Hays are visiting friends here this week. Rev. Lyons made his regular appointment at the Christian church here Sunday. We are glad to say that Mr. Wm Gill is much improved at this writing. Prof White's school at this place closed to-day. He will begin another next month. We are very sorry to say that Mr LaFayette Bowles is no better at this writing. Mrs Wade, wife of Charlie Wade, died last week after a protracted illness. The good women of Summershade went to the home of Mrs Mary Warder Monday of last week with their big willow basket - (several lines missing) ... celebrated the ___ birthday of Nancy Warder. The weather was very unfavorable for the occasion, but no one failed to take advantage of the opportunity for brightening and making happier the days of this venerable old lady. I am informed that forty-one persons were present and all enjoyed the dinner, for it was one that a king might well admire had he been invited to dine. The dinner was wholly a surprise to "Aunt Nancy", as she is usually called. There is something remarkable in Mrs. Warder's history, she being 83 years old and the only child living out of fourteen children, and has only one child living out of seven children. /s/ Tyree. (28 Dec 1897). From Sulphur Well: Mr James Morgan closed his school here Friday. Miss Pearl Skaggs won the premium in the advanced spelling class. The Mormon conference was largely attended. There were present, 46 traveling elders, the President of the Southern States mission, and two apostles, besides many visitors from various sections of the state. Ed Hays, one of the men who made an assault on Sam Wells, had his examining trial Wednesday, and his bond was fixed at $500, which, failing to give, he was remanded to jail. Henry Hays, the other assailant, is still at large. Miss Helen Skaggs is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Louisa Skaggs, of Edmonton. Mr Junius Love, from Minnesota, is with us. He will remove to Alabama soon. Mr. Elliot Conyers, of Monroe, Hart county, was here a few days ago. The young folks of Sulphur Well enjoyed a gay dance at Mr. J E Love's Wednesday night. Mrs Andy Brown has just returned from Missouri, where she has been visiting her father, Mr. James E. Hardy, formerly of this county. He is in very bad health, having a cancer on his face. /s/ Dandy Jim. (24 Dec 1897). More next week - Sandi

Sandi - and list, This bit on the Madstones is great! And the morning post today reminded me that I'd been meaning to send this along as a little contribution. Found this researching my WATKINS family who lived in Hardin/Hart and other of our counties, then moved along to the Illinois Territory. "Uncle Johnny had a madstone, and could cure mad-dog bites. The stone was not much bigger than a dollar, and he kept it in milk to soak all the poison out. If a person had been bitten the stone would cling tight to the wound till it was full of poison and then drop off, when it was soaked in the milk again and this repeated until the poison was drawn out. The stone was given to Uncle Johnny by a friend in Pennsylvania when he started for Illinois, and kept getting smaller. It was also good for snake bites, though most people now use whisky instead, not realizing that whisky has bitten thousands to one it ever cured.” This John Watkins (brother of my ancestor James) married Mary Swearins (sister of my ancestor Christena). They lived in Hardin Co in the early 1800s, then moved on to Harrison Co IN and to Sangamon/Menard Co IL. This quotation is from a sketch of the Watkins Family in Onstot's "Pioneers of Menard and Mason Counties" (1902). I'd love to connect with other listers researching these Watkins. Scottie, Have you checked the Monroe Co Tax records that are on microfilm from the FHL? Using those records I was able to narrow down an ancestor's death to a 2-3 year span. Mind you, I was using the tax records from the late 1840's and I realize that's before the time frame you are looking at. Good luck in your hunt! regards, Colleen Lill Sorry Doug, that makes sense. What other records can I look for that might help indicate when a person died in Monroe County between 1860 and 1870? and between 1870 - 1874? I have two ancestors that I can not find information on when they died. He was in the 1860 Census in Monroe County and in the 1870 Census, he is not listed but his wife is listed as a farmeress in Monroe County. His wife disappears after the 1870 Census. I know in 1862 Kentucky quit requiring the counties to keep the death records until 1876(?) when it was reinstated. Does anyone know if Monroe County still kept the records during 1862 - 1876? I know some of the records were lost when the courthouse burned. I can not find any record of him or his wife in the Monroe County, Ky, Clay County, TN, Jackson County, TN, or Barren County, KY cemetery books. I can't find them in Kentucky death records that are at the library. I have searched all the Civil war records I can find and can not find anything on him. All their male children were in Clay County, TN in the 1880 census so I checked the probate records for her in Clay County and found nothing. The female children are in Barren County in the 1880 census. I still need to check the probate records in Monroe County and possibly Barren County...are there any other records I can research in that might help me in this road block on these two? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Scottie Arnett
Scottie, You should give us their names. Also their children's names. Some list member may very well know them by name. Always provide as much information as possible. Good luck. Articles from our neighboring counties on this list. ALLEN CO: Gainesville, KY. Miss Belle Pope's school closes Friday with an entertainment. Mr J E Lovell, of Pope, KY is visiting the family of Mr T C Oliver here. Prof W R Taylor, our county superintendent, was here last week, working in the interest of the school at Douglassw Academy, this county. Prof Taylor had charge of this school for three terms, and will again take charge on January 10. We are sure he will have a good school, as he has taught all over the county with eminent success. It is safe to say that three-fourths of the teachers of Allen county have attended school under him. /s/ It's Me. (16 Dec 1897) Scottsville: Hatton Johnson and Miss Delia Hood were married a few days ago. Oscar Patton and Miss -ettie Pope will be married on December 22. While out hunting recently, Porter Read killed one large red fox, crippled another, and saw a third - all at the same time. Ed Quessenberry and Vernon Morgan have gone to Memphis, Tenn, to engage in the lumber business for the Gladden Lumber Co. John H Page, a former Allen county boy, who was elected Circuit Clerk of Louisville and Jefferson county at the recent election, was married yesterday to Miss Lily Mahoney, a most estimable young lady of Louisville. Mrs. W H Read has returned from a two weeks' visit to Bowling Green. (all of the above from 16 Dec 1897 issue) CUMBERLAND CO: (first line missing) ... on the head by a railroad mailhook, at Dodge City, Kansas, while making his regular run as a trainman, and his skull was fractured so that he died Monday morning. Mr. Alexander married a daughter of Mr W R Davis, of Marrowbone, and leaves a family of several small children, besides his wife. Mr. J I Alexander, the Marrowbone merchant, a brother of the dead man, accompanied by his wife, came over Monday and left Tuesday morning for Dodge City. (undated paper) HART CO: Munfordville, Ky., April 19 - Quite a sensation was developed here when Mr S G Wilkerson, a prominent attorney of this place, was arrested on a warrant sworn out by his brother, James Wilkerson, charging him with the betrayal of the latter's daughter. James McCorkle is also implicated in this matter. When McCorkle heard of this he boarded a train for Louisville, but was apprehended at Elizabethtown and returned here for trail. (Louisville Times to the Glasgow Weekly Times, 1897 or 1898). MONROE CO: Mr Jack Bowman, of Monroe county, was in the Bend last week, seeing about the school. (16 Apr 1897 issue) Mr Joe Pitcock and wife, of Monroe county, visited relatives and friends in the Bend Saturday and Sunday. Della who is a subscriber asked if I would forward this on to the lists. Is there anyone that can help her? If you have any information, you can write her privately. Thanks so very much. Many times when we find an ancestor's will, there will be a codicil or more than one. The ancestor could have re-written the entire will, but normally, they just made changes to the will's provisions by adding one or more codicils. What could cause the need for a revision to the original will? The spouse had died A child had died A married son or daughter had divorced. A child had disappeared into parts unknown There was a wayward child. He/she was written out of the will. A child had married and had children who needed to be added to the will A child had become disabled and needed a guardian appointed The ancestor had bought more land which needed to be cited in the will. The ancestor had sold land which had been given to a child or spouse. The ancestor's health had become impaired and he/she needed one or more of the children to live on the land and take care of them. Slaves had been bought, sold, died or had more children An heir had moved out of the area and didn't want what was given him. A business possibly co-owned with another had gone out of business. A guardian appointed in the will had died or refused to quality. An executor named had died or refused to quality. I'm sure you can think of many more reasons. When you read your ancestor's will and there is a codicil, try to determine what had happened in this individual's life that caused the need to revise the will.
