I just finished another book which will be my last for a time. I am going to be quite tied up on a large research job and a book order from the St. Louis Public Library for 65 of my books. This is the library, where, in 1970 I started on this crazy thing called genealogy! Here is the description of the next book; I'm working the old records right now. If you would like to see the index, as usual, write me privately. I'll reply as I can between copying books on a very, very old copy machine that - like the old airplanes which I piloted in the past - is held together with bailing wire and chewing gum! Sandi Barren Co Executor Bonds 1848-1860. The first book kept, these are photocopies of the original bonds for those dying with a will. Shown is the name of the deceased, the executor(s), bondsmen; some have the amount of bond which indicates the size of the estate. Has original signatures. An important research tool when relatives or friends are mentioned as the executor or bondsmen. It also gives a close date of death when none can be found in other records. 132 pages including a full-name index. ALLEN CO: Daniel STARK, of Allen county, died on the 10th inst., and was buried at the family burying ground at Ms. Mary MARTIN's in the Rocky Hill, Barren county, country on December 11. Mr. Start was over seventy years of age and had never married. (25 Dec 1895 issue) HART CO: At a dance given near Euclid, in Hart county, last Saturday night Henry MATHIS shot Tom MATHIS in the back, killing him instantly, and was instantly killed himself by someone shooting him. Alvin Mathis, a son of Henry Mathis, was also perhaps fatally shot. He is the young man who recently acquired notoriety by running away with the pretty daughter of Fielding BEAMS, of Hart county, but who was arrested in Louisville and the marriage prevented. Henry and Tom Mathis were not related. (1 Jan 1896). METCALFE CO: Mr. S D PORTER was married to Miss Laura May STOTTS last Sunday. They both live near Centre. Miss Stotts is the daughter of Wm Stotts, who was killed in the court house here during circuit court several years ago. (22 Jan 1896 issue) Mr. James HUNLEY, a clever man and highly respected citizen from Edmonton, died Sunday of pneumonia and was buried at Randolph Monday. He leaves a wife and two small children. Two of his sisters died in a few days of each other a few months ago, mention of which was made in the Times at that time.(22 Jan 1896 issue) Mrs. Laura PERKINS died at the home of her husband, Mr. C. A. Perkins, in Summer Shade, Monday of last week. She was a most excellent lady, loved and respected by all who knew her. Mrs. Perkins was a daughter of "Squire" J. H. McMURTRY. She was twenty-two years old and a consistent member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Wade SHIRLEY, who left the Summer Shame country for Nebraska with his mother when quite a small boy, and who has since resided near Salem in that State, met a tragic death on the 9th inst. Young Shirley, in company with a friend and companion by the name of Sam McCOOL, were out skating on the river when the ice suddenly gave way and they both went under and were drowned. Wade Shirley was a son of Mrs. Laura E. Shirley, one of the best ___ and esteemed ladies that ever lived in this section, and the news of the heartrending death of her son will be heard with genuine sorrow by all who knew her here. Her unfortunate son was eighteen years of age at the time of his death, and was a highly esteemed and promising young man. He recently concluded a successful district school, and only a month ago entered school in Salem for the winter, and was staying with the family of his uncle, Mr. R E GRINSTEAD. The sad ending of this bright young man calls to mind the fact that his father, grandfather and great grandfather all met with sudden and tragic deaths. (18 Dec 1895). MONROE CO: Mrs Martha C HILL, wife of Mr W W Hill, died at her home in Monroe county last week. Mrs. Hill was Miss Martha BEDFODRD before her marriage, and a most excellent lady. She was the mother of ten children; and was a lady beloved by all. (11 Dec 1895). Miss Louisa J. HILL died at her home in Monroe county last week, aged sixty-nine years. Since many of you are coming up with the same answer to the puzzler - let me give you a clue. There was nothing wrong with the Executor named in the will. He wanted to serve, he was qualified to serve. he didn't die or skip the country ... but there was something else causing an Administrator to be appointed instead. That's why I'm looking for - what could have caused it? Thanks, Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/
Greetings on the day following our remembrance of 911. We will never forget. Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week; let's see how you do on this one! This is an important thing for us to know. A little tip: When looking at the marriage records for your ancestors, consider the fact that they might have been married before and that the last name of the bride might not be her maiden name. During certain times frames in the past, there were forms that the clerk was supposed to fill out indicating if this was the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. marriage. But they weren't very good at keeping these records! If the clerk did not know the couple, he might assume that Jones was her maiden name - but she might be a Smith, the widow of a Jones. Double check! Sandi Sandi's Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php Sandi's site: http://ggpublishing.tripod.com/

EMONSON CO: Mrs. John Flora Seriously Shoots Her Husband in Edmonson County. Sometimes it is better to be an old man's darling than a young man's slave, and sometimes it is otherwise. The latter view is evidently held by Mrs. John Flora, of Sulphur Springs, Edmonson county, who yesterday emptied the contents of a double barrel shotgun into her husband's legs. She is twenty six years of age and Mr. Flora about sixty five. She is pretty and attractive and he is wrinkled and rather unpreposing in appearance. They have had one child born to them, but even this was not sufficient to cement the marital bond, and their lives have been anything but happy. It has been an open secret for some time that the marriage was a failure, and that contentment was a stranger to the Flora household and happiness an alien in the Flora family. Thursday last the husband and wife quarreled, with the result that Mrs. Flora took the child and went home to her mother. Mr. Flora did not object to his wife leaving, but he wanted the child, and yesterday went to the mother-in-law's to get it. Mrs. Flora was averse to giving up the little one, an a stormy scene ensued. After he had made two attempts to get away with the child, Mrs. Flora informed him that if he tried to carry it away again she would shoot him. Unheeding the warning, he took up the child and started off. The enraged woman quickly seized a double barrel shotgun and fired both barrels at close range at her retreating husband, the two loads taking effect in his legs. Mrs. Flora saying she fired at his legs in order to keep from hurting the child, and it escaped with out a scratch. Mr. Flora is seriously and perhaps fatally wounded, it being too early yet for his physicians to tell what will be the result of his injuries. The wounded man is a well-to-do Edmonson county farmer and a good citizen. Mrs. Flora has not been arrested. (from the Park City Times to the Glasgow Weekly Times, 29 Jan 1896). METCALFE CO: Since our last letter we have been summoned to witness the last hours of an expiring patriot and friend, Capt. J. B. Morris. A gentleman who was almost a pioneer of the county, who had weathered the storms of sixty-nine years has laid down his burden and retired to rest. The ever-changing and treacherous billows of time will sweep o'er his grave, but they will not disturb him not. His life had been busy and eventful, and accompanied with many hardships and privations. His ancestral home and birthplace was Patrick county, Virginia. He was the oldest child, born March 5, 1827. When ten years of age he accompanied his parents to Barren (now Metcalfe) county, Kentucky. He was reared on a farm, and received such educational advantages as the inferior log huts of the time afforded. He was a close student, however, and a careful reader during his life, and succeeded in become one of the best informed men of his community. He was married in 1853 to Elizabeth, a daughter of Wm. and Isabel Clack, of Barren county. This union has been blessed with eight children - five daughters and three sons. Alice is the wife of Ambrose King, of Hart county; Lizzie is the wife of Judge Pendleton, of Metcalfe county; Katherine became Mrs. Masters, of Metcalfe county; Mattie and Hattie are yet single, and remained with their father until his death. J. S. and J. B. B. Morris are at Hardyville in the mercantile business, and Wm. Leslie, another son resides in California. When Capt. Morris attained his majority he first engaged in the manufacture of tobacco, an enterprise which proved quite successful. I have done some research on the John Flora family for my Mammoth Cave area database. I think his wife was Ellen Hill and not only did he live but they reconciled and had at least 2 more children. Thanks for posting this Sandi as it adds some info to what I had. ________________________________ From: Sandi Gorin <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2011 9:46 AM Subject: [SCKY] TIDBITS FROM THE TIMES EMONSON CO: Mrs. John Flora Seriously Shoots Her Husband in Edmonson County.
