    1. [SCKY] TIDBITS FROM THE GLASGOW WEEKLY TIMES
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Hart Co: (all 3 Jan 1899 issue) The farmers are done gathering corn, and the yield is better than was expected. Mrs. Cy SWINNEY visited relatives and friends in Horse Cave during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. John WILLIS gave a social to their many young friends Christmas night. Mr. and Mrs. Jake HARPER entertained quite a number of their friends during the holidays. The many friends of Mr. M T PEDEN will learn with regret that his condition is unimproved. Joe BROWN has just returned from Louisville, where he sold his crop of new tobacco for a fair price. Mr. FIERS, of Green County, was visiting his cousin, Mr. Drewey FIERS of this place, during the holidays. Rev. Solon EDWARDS, of Rock Spring, preached to an attentive audience at Cedar Cliff Church Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Tommie TOMS has built an addition to his home, and he now has the most beautiful residence in our valley. Mr. Toms has a fine farm, and handles the best of stock. Mr. Jimmie CRABTREE and wife, of Glasgow Junction, were visiting friends in this neighborhood last Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Arnold BURD, after being confined to her bed for several months with a broken limb, is able to walk about her room. Mr. James WANTLAND and son B Mills, of Rockfield, and Mr. Willie BRODY of Canmer, visited Mr. and Ms. E H PEDEN last week. Messrs Sam and Will LOCKE are feeding thirty head of fine cattle delivered at an early date. They will feed a lot of cattle for the summer market. Mr. and Mrs Wm. BURD entertained quite a number of their friends at their beautiful home Monday evening last. The occasion was in honor of their beautiful and accomplished niece, Miss Ida MILLER, of Larue county, who has been their guest for several weeks. The following couples eloped last Thursday to Jeffersonville where they were married: Bob LAFFERTY, of Uno, and Miss Josie HARDY; Mit HARPER and Miss Nettie LOVE, of Horse Cave; Ray HARPER and Miss Birdie KIRTLEY, of Rowletts. They are splendid young people and have the best wishes of their many friends. Metcalfe Co: (All from 4 Jan 1899 issue) Sanford WOODWARD, who has been in Texas, came home last week. Squire B C GREER, who has been critically ill for several days last, is better at this writing. M I N [sic] CRENSHAW and family, the Goodnight section, spent a part of the holidays with friends in this community. There has been a number of weddings in this and surrounding neighborhoods, during the past few months, and the prospects are good for more in the near future. Thomas BALL, of the Sugar Plant neighborhood (where was that?) and Miss GLASS, of the southern portion of this county, eloped to Indiana last week, and were married. They are nice, clever, young people, and belong to the best families of the communities in which they live. Success and happiness to them in married life, is the wish of the writer. There is soon to start in Metcalfe county, an institution that every right thinking business man will be proud of, as it is the first and only one in the county, and that is the opening, at Edmunton [sic] of a new bank, founded by C. W. THOMPSON who is widely known in Southern Kentucky. I hope the new bank will be of great benefit to the citizens of the county and elsewhere. 1. [SCKY] MONROE CO - STEAMBOAT ROAD
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. This was taken from the 18 Apr 1974 issue of The Tompkinsville News: In the long ago what gave the name of the road leading from the headwaters of Marrowbone Creek to a section of the country some six miles south of there, now known as the PALMORE settlement through what has always been called the big woods. In these days the farmers shipped their tobacco to New Orleans by barges, made by land. During this time one year, a man by the name of AMYX made a trip to New Orleans to try to get a steamboat to come up the river to get their tobacco. During the time he was gone to see after getting the steamboat, the neighbors on both sides of this big woods made arrangements and started on each end to open a wider and better road until they met. During the time the men were opening out the road said they were getting it ready for Louis Amyx' steamboat to come along and so it has always been called the steamboat road. On the west side of this road about one mile there stood a large beech tree and travelers cut their initials and date until the main trunk of the tree was about as full and high as one could reach and that was called the "Marked Beech" when they were trying to locate the whereabouts, etc., of their hogs and cattle, etc. Deer and wild turkeys and all game animals were in those woods and there were other noted places. One other steep hill, so steep that you could not ride your horse down, and the road was called the "Winding Stairs." Author was J. B. Harvey. Do any of you have other information you'd like to share on the list about this road or area? 1. Re: [SCKY] WARREN CO - ST JOSEPH CATHOLIC CEMETERY - PART #1
    2. Charles
    3. Sandi and all, St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery is located next to the older section of Fairview Cemetery. Fairview Cemetery is located on both sides of Fairview Ave. The older section is on the left as you are leaving town and the new section is located on the right. St. Joseph is located just past Fairview. When you see the drive for Fairview Cemetery, keep going and you will see another road. This is the road for St. Joseph. It looks as if you are going into a park. There are basketball courts on the right side of this side road. Hope this helps. 3. Good morning on a rainy day in Glasgow! Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week. Last week's puzzler had very, very few guessers again, so I hope this week you will jump in and give it a try. Remember - think older times in Kentucky and south central KY. Sometimes when searching for an answer, you will find current definitions which might not apply in the 1800s! Click on the URL in my signature line called Sandi's puzzlers - and good luck! In early childhood he removed with his parents to Barren County, and in 1860 to that portion which is now a part of Metcalfe County. His father, Jeremiah Franklin, was born March 21, 1801, in Henry County, Va., where he resided until about 1822, when he removed to Kentucky, where he now resides. He was a son of Lewis Franklin, who was born at Norvolk, Va., about 1755, and who was a soldier in the Revolutionary war under Gates, Greene and others, and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He was of English descent.  Jeremiah Franklin was twice married; first, in 1825, to Mrs. Lucy Rowland, daughter of Clem Murphy. She was born in 1798, in Patrick County, Va. To them were born Milley (Wells), Lucretia (Toomey), Virginia (Spencer) and George H. His second marriage took place in 1860, to Mrs. Amanda (Hutchens) Ritter. From this union sprang William D., Tabitha (Spencer), Caroline, (James) and Lewis. George H. was also twice married; first, March 2, 1854, to Mary M., daughter of William T. and Nancy (Spencer) Bailey. She was born February 11, 1837.  To them have been born Corilla (Feggett), Lucy (Chaney), Nancy (Locke), Virginia (Nunn), William B., George H., Ann, Cornelius, Albert and Mary B. (twins) and Milley. His second marriage took place September 1, 1881, with Susan N., daughter of Thomas and Zilpah (Deweese) McFelea. She was born March 9, 1848.  To them were born Zilpah and Clem.  By industry, economy and perseverence Mr. Franklin has become the owner of 310 acres of well improved and productive land.  He is a thoroughly self-made man, and in politics is a Democrat.  He loves his home, and with the exception of a seven month's tour through Illinois, Missouri and Indiana, he has always resided in Kentucky. 1. [SCKY] BARREN CO - HARVEST OF HISTORY
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I apologize that I have been remiss in posting information about this great event - I've been glued to the copy machine. The South Central KY Cultural Center will be presenting its 2nd annual Harvest of History program. It will be held Sept 23rd & 24 (Friday and Saturday), and will again be a walking tour of the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery with portrayers, in costume, representing the following people buried there. PFC Leon Atha will be portrayed by Dane Bowles; Miss Callie Beals will be represented by Patty Hughes; Major William Harvey Botts will be portrayed by John Botts; Mr Lucian and Mrs. Ella Carden will be represented by Todd & Ann Steenbergen; General Joseph H. Lewis by Brian Pack; Mrs. Flora Harvey Shannon by Barbara Pendleton; Mrs Indy Bass Weldon by Gina Lyon and John Wyatt by Danny Wyatt. Tickets are $10.00 each. Tours begin at the Cultural Center; people will be bused from there to the cemetery. There will be a limited number of golf carts provided for those who need assistance. Tour hours are both nights from 6 until 9 pm. You can pick up your ticket at the Cultural Center prior to boarding the bus. This will be very interesting; last year was a splendid event with a large attendance. I remember it well, portraying Miss Annie Gorin and attempting to sound, as a Midwestener, like a genteel Southern lady. If you get a chance, you WILL enjoy this! Sandi
