One of our subbers, Sam Terry, sent me this today, a story I had forgotten about over the years. I thought you might enjoy this as I posted his cemetery deed Monday. Thanks Sam for permission to send to the list! Sandi Sam says: James Chenault has an interesting story which I include on my Cemetery Walking Tours. As a young man, Chenault was an avid supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was one of a small group of renegades who devised and set into action a plan to disrupt the entire East Coast and, in their opinion, cause such devastation that the Confederacy would prevail. Their plan: burn down New York City! The group plotted and planned a scheme in which the participants would be strategically placed throughout the city and at the appointed time, would set fires, the plan being that they would set so many fires it would overwhelm any firefighting efforts and ultimately burn the entire city. Their feeling was that by destroying New York City, the entire country would be thrown into such a state of confusion that the war would be disrupted. (Does anyone see the similarity to 9-11-2001?) There were several fires set, but some of those appointed to set fires apparently did not follow through, many other fires were detected and quickly extinguished. Ultimately the plot failed. There is a book about this operation, The Man Who Tried to Burn New York, and Chenault is documented as one of the men involved in the scheme, though very little information about him is included. The book gives a summary of the lives of the men after the war, and in Chenault's case, it simply states that no further information is known. However, there is more information about James Chenault: he returned to Barren County, Kentucky, where he became a respected Baptist preacher.
Now, knowing these are also shown on ancestry.com, with errors, etc (see my previous e-mail)! I have finished the rest of the alphabet. There are 137 certificates in this batch. Some of the names are unreadable as many Barren Co residents were from other counties or states or married people from other counties or states and the doctor wasn't sure of the names (or wrote in their typical handwriting (sorry)). There is one from Germany with a wife from Switzerland in this batch. If you don't have ancestry.com or want to see the index on what I hope is the correct information (some were shown in Hart Co, Warren Co, etc. but died here), send me an e-mail. I indexed only those who had died and parents again - a small index. Thanks! In reference to Doug Moore's post about death certificates being available through ancestry.com for those who hold membership. Yes, I am aware that the death certificates are on line. However, I have worked for some time now trying to get the accurate certificates. Many on ancestry.com are out of order, in the wrong year, in the wrong county and a lot of the names are clobbered beyond recognition. They are transcribed by people who do not live in Barren Co and are not familiar with the names. In scanning their records, which are in basically alphabetical order, names were transcribed wrong and thus not searchable; babies were shown either with no name, stillborn, child, male, female, etc. I went through every one of them, 151 in the segment of A-K and 137 in the L-M and the African American deaths. Some names are still unreadable, but I double-checked them all. So, I do encourage you to use ancestry.com - but be aware that there are errors. If you have an Ancestry membership, Kentucky DCs are available by county starting in 1910 (but not much until 1911/12): http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1222 To get an alphabetical listing for a county in a given year: 1. Leave the names blank. 2. Enter the location county and year. 3. Leave everything else blank. 4. Click on search. Doug Moore

I just finished the Barren Co 1912 Death Certificates for surnames A through K. There are so many that I had to split them into 2 sections. Then I want to do the African-American death certificates. If you would like to see the index, write me privately and later tonight or tomorrow, I'll send it to you. Thanks, Sandi Barren Co 1912 Death Certificates, Surnames A through K. 151 certificates, copies of the originals. Information shown includes name of deceased, age, place of birth and death, cause of death, parents' names (with place of birth when known), physician, undertaker and place and date of burial. Many infants who would not appear on the 1910 nor 1920 census. These are all white deaths; African-American certificates will be available soon.157 pages including a full-name index of the deceased and parents only.
Good morning and happy Columbus Day! A few things to cover this morning. First, if you haven't heard: The annual Green County Genealogical Society Book Fair will be held 5 Nov 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. CST at the Greensburg Fire & Rescue Bldg in Greensburg, KY. They will have several vendors selling genealogy books so it will be an exciting day. Come and join them if you can. I regret that for the 3rd year I won't be able to participate in the fair barring a miracle; with many things still hanging pending in my life right now reference my Mom's death, sale of her home, etc. etc, and a copy machine that is getting old - I doubt if I can make it. This is a fun event, well attended, well planned out and some wonderful people there. If you can make it - do! Now to the puzzler - Charlie has it posted and I hope you will give it a try. I try to make these puzzlers a teaching tool - some are harder than others. Thanks to those who participated last week! Now - go get a cup of coffee and I'll see you tomorrow! This is a cemetery deed - not seldom seen. The Odd Fellows Cemetery is the old name for Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. There is now an Odd Fellows Cemetery on W. Cherry Street in Glasgow which is African-American. This is a pre-printed form. The Odd Fellows sold the cemetery to the City of Glasgow. ODD FELLOWS CEMETERY In consideration of the sum of thirty five Dollars, paid by James CHENAULT to the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Odd Fellows Cemetery, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, I Theo. GOLDNAMMER, Noble Grand of Glasgow Lodge No. 65, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, do hereby, for and on behalf of said Lodge, convey to James Chenault one Lot No. 57 in said Cemetery, being 28 by 28 feet in size, as can be seen by reference to the plot and survey of said grounds on file in the office of said Board of Trustees. To have and to hold the same unto him and his heirs forever with covenants of general warranty. But it is expressly understood that said lot is never to be used or improved for any purpose inconsistent with the purposes for which it and the grounds connected with it have been set apart and dedicated; and further, that the entire sole government and control of said lot and grounds for the purposes aforesaid, is reserved to said Lodge and its said Board of Trustees under such by-laws and regulations as they may adopt. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, and caused the same to be attested by the Secretary under the seal of this Lodge. This the 4th day of March 1889. /s/ Theo Goldnammer, Noble Grnd. Attest: C. D. DICKEY, Secretary. Rev. James Chenault is buried at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery; born 1842, died 1915; Masonic Emblem. Many more of his family are also buried there. And, when I bought my plot there, it was just quite a bit more than it was in 1889! Joyce Stover on our list caught an error on the news items from Cumberland Co. I dated it 21 Dec 1899. It wasn't. The public library staff typed these items up many years ago and gave them to them; each column is dated - and from several years of papers. This one was in error. Joyce noted that: The T.A. Cary who was mentioned was Turner A. Cary who died in May of 1898. His appraisal and sale were listed in Cumberland Co. Will Book I, pp. 85 and 86, dated 26 December, 1898. Also, John Philpott's; death of 27 Dec. probably came from a different issue. So, I apologize; I don't have access to the papers so cannot double check. If you will go to: http://glasgowdailytimes.com/local/x1225298631/Help-needed-to-save-piece-of-history you will see an article in tonight's paper (Glasgow Daily Times) that is most interesting in the history of this county. This is an extremely historical site here and this article deals with efforts to save it. Dr. Henry Clay Morris was a prominent Methodist preacher, and J. L. Piercy, another minister from here held services there. Gary Bewley and others are trying to preserve this site before it falls into ruins. This page will change likely tomorrow when the next issue of the paper comes out, so read fast!! CUMBERLAND CO: (all Dec 21, 1899) Cloyd's Landing: Miss Carrie STEWART of Judio is very low with consumption. Mr. T A CARY is still very low and not expected to live long. Mr. John GRAVES is visiting relatives in Barren county this week. Mr. John PHILPOT, of Judio, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, of consumption. Mr. Waller BAKER of Bakertown, visited in Salt Lick Bend Tuesday and Wednesday. Quite a number of young folks visited at Mr. L A CARY's Tuesday night and had a social and a good time in general. Misses Cora and Daisy GENTRY, of Black's Ferry, visited relatives and friends in Salt Lick Bend several days this week, returning home yesterday. Several of the young folks, of this community, will attend Prof. A A HUDDLESTON's school at Burkesville this winter and spring. It appears that Cumberland County is going to have an over-supply of teachers next fall. The examination should be very rigid next year so that the wheat can be separated from the tares. Mr E P HUTCHENS sold all of his personal property, consisting of stock, farming implements, household and kitchen furniture, at public auction last Tuesday. Mr. Hutchens sold his farm some time ago to Mr Bob TAYLOR for the sum of $3,000. Mr. Hutchens will leave in a few days but we are not informed as to where he will go. Many years ago, the late Eva Coe Peden copied all the cemeteries she would find in Monroe Co; her native county. She printed 2 volumes of cemetery records which I now publish. I'm sure by now that many of these little family cemeteries can no longer be found and of course, at the larger cemeteries, more burials have occurred since her transcription. For a time, I am going to do what I have been doing in Warren Co - give you the names of the peoples she had entered as buried in various Monroe Co cemeteries. I'm sure, like all of us, there might be errors here and there; it is difficult to read old stones that are covered with briars, dirt, poison ivy .. and stones might have been missed that had sunken in or covered by brush. Many times, before GPS, Eva's directions are minimal, but we owe her a great debt of gratitude for the hours she spent recording these burials. AKERS Cemetery. I was recently reminded of something while tracing one of our family back to England. When I found a confirmed line in England, I delved in. Did you know that when seeing a death date in old English records - it is not really the day the individual died - it is the date of burial! Certainly it would be shortly after the individual's death, but it can throw off one's records. Charlie has posted the puzzler of the week - are you brave enough to try to guess? Click on the URL in my signature line as usual. I have also added the URL of the SCKY archives for those of you wanting to check back through about 16 years or so of posts.
