I should also mention, Doug has good reasons besides proximity for his belief that Abe & Elizabeth are buried in the center of Mount Poland cemetery. (there are about 50 unmarked graves that only a few have been identified) Abe was the clerk for Mount Poland Church as early as 1875. I too am interested in this line, Although not related per se. His wife is a second, 3x removed. I have sent Doug snips of info on this line over the years as I acquire it and have found nothing to date to relate Abe to any local Moore line. I know that's not saying much, but in all the Moore research I have read to date, similar families followed similar routes. This Moore line along with another in Barren line I am interested in don't fit the mold. Also, the Rev. Goad diary Doug speaks of is that of James Harvey Goad. I have pics of him, but my favorite is when he traveled to the John Simpson Emmert farm with a photographer so he could have his picture taken with a man he respected. I'm not looking for him, I know where he is. This concerns George Washington Emmert s/o Phillip Emmert and Deborah Lyon. He is buried at Old Mulkey with his parents and some siblings. (although not recorded or honored with a marker) He was born March 18, 1834 in Monroe and died in a Glasgow Hotel Aug. 26, 1861 that was being used as a Confederate Hospital. I own the family Bible giving his birth. I have acquired his estate settlement. No records or newspaper articles exist to tell of his service other than an article from the Glasgow Republican of May 4, 1898 that will follow. My question is, How do I prove this man served when he died before he fired a shot? He enlisted but died before he was issued a firearm or uniform, if uniforms were issued at all. I have failed to find any record whatsoever. I welcome any response. The article reads as transcribed by Martha Harrison: "Some days ago it was our privilege to enjoy the hospitality of our old friend, John NETHERTON, who lives on the farm which was once the property and home of General Philip EMMERT, a pioneer settler who entered and patented land about eighty years ago. After a pleasant conversation with the family and partaking of a good dinner, we, in company with Mr. NETHERTON and his son, took a stroll over the farm, the home of our youth, in search of old land-marks and old associations. Our first visit was to the location of the tanyard where many days have been spent in company with fathers and brothers, when we were at work in the yard, and when we were engaged in childish play. But, alas! father and brothers, all except one, are long since passed into the world beyond, and very few things are left to indicate that a tanyard ever existed on the spot. Forty to seventy-five years ago, EMMERT's tanyard was one of the best known and oftenest visited places in the community, being the only tanyard for several miles around, when shoes and harness were not bought at stores, but hides were carried to the tanyard and worked into leather, and made into shoes and harness by the journeyman shoe and harness maker in his annual visit to the families, or the leather was made up in the neighborhood shoe and harness shop. But we not live in a better day, where these old trades and professions are not needed. Near by the old tanyard is a large beech tree inscribed "G. W. E.", 1850. G. W. EMMERT was a son of Gen. Philip EMMERT, who left the parental roof about 1854 and for a time made his home with the late Jacob DILLON, of whose death we had an account a few days ago. When the conflict of war came on in 1861, he was living somewhere in Allen county, taking sides with the Confederate army, but lived only a few days after enlisting. We have been told he died in the old building which is used as a hotel near the Glasgow hotel - that being used as hospital by the Confederates then organizing at Glasgow. He was a member of Gen. Joe LEWIS' regiment, and his death was probably the first death in the regiment. James SMITH, late post master at Glasgow, a member of his company, carried the news of his death to his relatives, and his remains were carried to Monroe county, at Old Mill Creek Church. While rambling over the grounds, we measured some sugar trees that G. W. EMMERT planted near the old tanyard, and found one to be three feet six inches in circumference, another sugar tree standing in a field nearby, which we have been told was so small when the field was cleared, that it was bent over and covered to protect it from the fire of the clearing, we measured and found it to be eight feet and seven inches around, about three feet from the ground. We lingered several hours around the old premises but found everywhere the ravages of time and custom had wrought their many changes. The orchard, one of the first planted in that part of the country and once was one of the largest, is now almost destroyed; the houses have been changed; the barn is rotted down and hauled away; the meadows are cultivated in corn and other crops; the roads are all changed; we met only "Abe" MOORE and M. K. HAMMER of the old citizens of the neighborhood while visiting in the community and we thought that like poor Rip Van Winkle there would be no one to know us or give a friendly home greeting." Randy Jobe > ==================================================================== Randy mentions Abe Moore above. I have been seeking his ancestry for decades, so here is some info on Abe. For a long time I have been studying a number of Moore lines in the Kentucky counties of Allen, Barren, Cumberland, Metcalfe and Monroe; but mostly Monroe. Several of these lines can also be found in Clay, Jackson and Overton counties in Tennessee. I have done some work on the family of an Abraham Moore, but have never been able to tie him to any other Moore line. I want to say what I know about Abraham Moore and see if someone can help. I first found Abraham Moore in the Monroe Co marriage records. His marriage to Elizabeth Ford was recorded in 1853 and Abraham was listed (in the marriage record) as a resident of Jackson Co, TN. I have done a lot of work on Jackson Co lines, but I could find no trace of Abe Moore in Jackson Co. Other Jackson Co researchers (including several who work on Moores) had no knowledge of Abe. So I assume that he had come to Jackson Co shortly before his marriage. After the marriage Abe and Elizabeth always lived in the Hestand area of Monroe Co (this is where Elizabeth Ford's family resided). They had 10 children, with 9 living to adulthood. All 9 married, had children and (more or less) remained in the the counties touching on Monroe. In two of the birth records of Abe's children, Abe's birthplace was listed. In one it was Hawkins Co, TN, and in the other it was Greene Co, TN. I have done some (but not intensive) research in those areas and I have not yet found anything on Abe Moore in east Tennessee. The death of Abe's wife (1907 in Monroe Co) was recorded in the diary of Rev Goad, but Abe's death was not in the diary. I presume that he died between 1900 and 1910. In 1900 Abe, Elizabeth and son Roddy were shown in the census in the area where Abe had always lived. In 1910 Roddy was shown living alone in (probably) the same location. If Abe were still living in 1910, he probably would have been with Roddy. I don't know where Abe and Elizabeth are buried, but I would guess that they are in the Mt Poland Cem, which is located in the Hestand area by the Mt Poland Church. Abe and Elizabeth were among the founders of the church in 1875 and Abe served as the church clerk. Four of their children are known to be buried in the Mt Poland Cem. Listed at the end of this note is a chart showing the children of Abe and Elizabeth Moore. You can find a complete listing of their descendants that I know about at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/files/moore/AbrahamMooreDesc.html You can find much more by accessing my WorldConnect database at the URL below and typing in Moore, Abraham : http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dougmoore My primary question is about Abraham Moore's ancestry. Not my line, but here are two tidbits of Davis info that might help someone. Daisy Davis, b. 30 Dec 1875 in Cumberland Co, d. 12 Mar 1952 in Cumberland Co, md. James Edward Pace. She was a daughter of George and Sarah Ann (Beck) Davis. John B. Davis md. Elizabeth Williams on 3 Sep 1868 in Metcalfe Co. He was born in Cumberland Co. She was daughter of Jabez and Mary Ann (Wade) Williams. John and Elizabeth had a daughter, Mary, b. Feb 1870.
This is a note about Jonathan Davis, but it starts with Joel Moore. Joel Moore (and wife Regina Hestand) came to Monroe(Barren) Co in the summer of 1800. He settled on 400 acres which touched Mill Creek and contained the Harlan's Crossroads (HC) cemetery. Joel was dead by 1840 and at that time his original land grant was shared by his sons Jeremiah and John W Moore (my ancestor). In the early 1850s Jeremiah migrated west (to Missouri and then Kansas), but John W Moore stayed. Not long after Jeremiah left, a Jonathan Davis appeared (from east TN) and occupied the land vacated by Jeremiah. There are no Monroe Co deeds that would show the transfer of Jeremiah's land to Jonathan Davis (these were burned in the war). The Davis's and Moores lived next to each other on this land well into the 20th century. Two of Jonathan Davis's children married children of John W Moore and the families were close in many ways. For example, The Davis family buried their dead in the old Moore family cemetery, which eventually became the Harlan's Crossroads Cemetery (circa 1900). I have often wondered if there might be an early TN or NC connection between these two families. For example, did Jonathan Davis show up in Monroe Co at the time of Jeremiah Moore's departure because he knew that the land would be there for him? I have done just a little research (census only) on the Davis family in east TN. I find Jonathan Davis in Knox Co in 1850, living next to a Joshua Davis (probably a brother). In 1840 Jonathan and Joshua can be found living next to each other in Greene Co. Prior to this they would have still been in NC, their birth state. You can see what I have on Jonathan Davis in my WorldConnect database at the URL below: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dougmoore&id=I13201 Does anyone know any more about this Davis clan? I'm a descendant of Moses FERGUSON & Sophia PHELPS -- of near Rock Bridge / Sulphur Lick area -- son Sparrel P. Ferguson (1818-1888) and Charlotte T. Harris (1821-1889), and their son Samuel Turner Ferguson (1864-1927) & Lou Ella "Ellie" McPherson (1867-1949). These Fergusons and a few others founded Skaggs Creek Church (1840); and Sparrel as a minister married many couples of this area. They petitioned to leave Mill Creek Church to establish a new church in the Old Stephens Meeting House. Later in 1859 Sparrel P. Ferguson helped to organize the Monroe Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. They first belonged to Mill Creek Church, where my ancestors Francis Harris, Sr. and Sarah Kays were married Feb. 14, 1805. This FERGUSON family was from Bedford / Franklin Co.'s, VA and earlier from Chesterfield / Henrico Co.'s, VA, where they settled in the 1650s. My southcentral ancestry includes: Walker, Smith (Schmidt), Hayes, Emberton, Harris, Ferguson, McPherson, Goodman, Waldrop, Hamilton, Phelps, Moulder, Evans, Guffey, Coffelt, Luster ... So sorry, I forgot the subject line. I am always interested in info on Denisons related to Benjamin and Drucilla Denison from Barron, and then Hart Co. Kentucky and especially concerning his nephew Zadoc Denison who moved to Pulaski-Phelps Co area of Missouri. Thanks Joyce Wilson

Tip for the week: In reading the old deeds one might find the term: "for love and consideration" and a nominal fee listed for the land sold, normally $1.00. This indicates a relationship between the grantor and the grantee, likely a close family member. In most instances, that relationship isn't stated. Sometimes this is deeded with a requirement that the grantee perform some duty such as taking care of the grantor and/or his wife, or returning to the state and county, etc. See you tomorrow!
