    1. [SCKY] TIDBITS FROM THE GLASGOW WEEKLY TIMES
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Monroe Co: The following account of the killing of Mr. Chas. SEAY, formerly of Fountain Run, Monroe county, but lately of Berlin, Ill., is written by Mr. E. A. COFFELT, of that place. Mr. Seay is, we believe, a half brother of Messrs. John and Oscar Seay, two young business men well-known here, and is himself well remembered by a large number of our citizens. BERLIN, ILL., Jan. 19 - Editor Times: A former correspondent of your paper, Charles Seay, proprietor of a feed store at Springfield, was killed by being run over by a train. He was run down by the north-bound C. P. and St. L. train shortly after 7 o'clock, Jan. 15, 1897. He lived for an hour after being struck by the train. The circumstances surrounding his death indicate that it may not have been accidental. The last seen of Seay alive was about five o'clock in the morning, he was then in McHales store near the Fair Grounds. He left the store and started in the direction of the railroad track. Mrs. McHale says he was in the house but a short time. As the train neared Sangamon avenue, Ray KELLY, who was a half block away, saw the train strike him, he told his mother and she notified the neighbors. The train was stopped and the injured man was carried to McHale's. The Coroner was notified and as soon as he could went to the place. Medical aid was summoned and everything possible was done to relieve the dying man. He lingered until 8:45 when he died. The remains were taken to Bisch's undertaking establishment. The head and body were badly bruised and crushed. Sheriff BAXTER learned that the father of the dead man lived at Fountain Run, Ky., and wired him. In the afternoon the sheriff received an answer asking what condition the body was in and Sheriff Baxter informed the father. Late at night the sheriff received a telegram instructing him to bury the body here. Some residents of the village are of the opinion that Seay was thrown under the train. The trainman say they did not see him until he was struck. He always had money. There was nothing found on his clothing when taken in charge by the Coroner. LATER. The remains of Chas. Seay were taken from the undertaking parlors of Chas. T. Bisch, yesterday morning at 9 a.m. to Berlin, Ill., by his former schoolmate and companion, W. A. THOMAS, formerly of Fountain Run, Ky., the home and birthplace of the deceased. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. HADLY, of the Christian church, at Berlin. The interment took place in the family lot of Willis A. Thomas. Mr. Thomas himself came from hear Fountain Run, Ky. in 1887. He is now city marshal, and is a fearless officer. Chas. Seay had many friends in Berlin. All who knew him knew him only to like him. The church was crowed [sic] to pay their last respects. (27 Jan 1897 issue. NOTE: Having lived in Springfield, IL, I am very familiar with the location of this death and crossed those railroad tracks daily. The Bisch Funeral Home in Springfield, is still operating and I've attended several funerals there. Warren Co: Mrs. Lee RADFORD died at her home in Oakland Station, Friday of last week. Mrs. Radford was the daughter of Dr. J. W. HACKNEY, a prominent physician and citizen of Oakland, and a granddaughter of Mr. Jere JORDAN, now one of the wealthiest and esteemed men of Warren county, but for many years a resident of Barren. Mrs. Radford was a most excellent Christian woman and was greatly beloved and esteemed by all. The remains were interred at Oakland Station Saturday last, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends of the family. (27 Jan 1897 issue). Mr. Scott ISBELL, of Bowling Green and Miss Sue STONE, of Galloway's Mill, Warren county, will be married today at the residence of the bride. There are few Warren county men better known in Barren that Scott Isbell, and in all his wide aquaintance there is no living man who will deny that he is the whitest sort of a white-man. He is prominent as a farmer and as a stockman, of the salt of the earth as a citizen and an all-around splendid gentleman. His bride is a popular and accomplished lady, a fitting help-meet for her excellent husband. Mr. and Mrs. Isbell will make their home at the residence of the groom near Bowling Green. (27 Jan 1897 issue). 1. [SCKY] McLean/McClain
    2. Joyce Stover
    3. My John McLean/McClain/McLain is a mystery man. He showed up in Barren Co. in time to marry Susan Jane Frank in 1836. Susan was d/o Peter Frank, one of the two brothers who were early settlers in Glasgow. They had a nail factory but reportedly it was too modern for the times so they became blacksmiths instead. I have many documents pertaining to their activities from Barren Co. records but very little on John McLean. >From the city council records of Glasgow, I know that he ran a grocery store. He also did street repair for the city, as there are several mentions in the council minutes of paying him for working on the streets. The 1840 Barren Co. census has two men in his household: one aged 20-29 and the other aged 30-39. I don’t know which is John. I am carrying him in my database as the one aged 20-29 but somehow I have a feeling he may be the older of the two men. If so, he was born 1800-1810. The council/trustees meeting of 7 January, 1847 is the last mention of him being alive. Susan Jane was head of household when the 1850 census was taken. I have the guardian bonds for when Wm. Frank was appointed guardian of all 4 of John’s children. The bonds were executed in 1856. Perhaps this is a clue to when Susan Jane died. I haven’t been able to locate graves for either John or Susan Jane, although her parents are in the older Glasgow cemetery. At any rate, sometime in the late 1850’s, Caroline and John T. “Jack” came to Burkesville to live with another uncle, Josiah P. Frank who was a saddler and who had moved to Burkesville. Josiah had married Amanda Williams and Caroline was courted by Amanda’s younger brother James Osborne Williams. They married in 1861. Capt. Jack McLean/McClain was a Civil War officer who committed suicide and is buried atop the Alpine Hill at Burkesville. Family lore says that Caroline’s sister Sarah Jane married a man named Rainbolt and settled in the midwest. Near the end of Caroline’s life, her youngest son Tildon “Dick” took Caroline to see her sister. Reportedly the visit didn’t go too well because although they were blood sisters, their lives had been spent apart and they had little in common. I never have found what happened to the younger son of the family, Joseph H. The last I found of him was the guardian bond in 1856. If anyone else is researching this family, I would love to hear from them.

Court records prove one brother, John Lee of Wayne County, married to Tabitha Francis 1810. Robert married Leutitia Rountree in Edmonson County in 1832, had children William, born about 1833, md Margaret Blair; James Louis, born 9 June, 1835, md cousin Tabitha Frances Lee, then Lizzie Pulliam; Claranda born 1839, married cousin John L. Lee; Mary Jane born about 1847 in MIssouri, married William Adwell; Joseph Francis born 1849 in Missouri, married five times; and Thomas Edward, born Jefferson County 1852, md Mary Ann Kenedy in Edmonson County. Also any information about Daniel Kenedy, Irish immigrant carpenter brought to Edmonson County by Larkin Proctor to work on a hotel. He was born in Ireland in 1822, married Mary Hogan. They came to America in 1848 with one daughter, Margaret, who evidently died shortly after arrival in Boston. Daughter Catherine married James Morris Hunt in Edmonson County; Mary Ann married Thomas E. Lee; son Michael never married. The children are buried at the Mammoth Cave Baptist Cemetery. They were made wards of O.P. Shackleford in 1867, listed as orphans, but we have found no record of the deaths of their parents. We would appreciate any information about these families. 1. [SCKY] Roll Call - James MATKIN (Warren & Edmonson County)
    2. mkbourgeois
    3. I'm looking for the father of James MATKIN (sometimes shown as James MADKIN), b. 1796 - 1798 in either VA or KY, died between March and May of 1871 in Edmonson County, married to Mary Ann Chastain (daughter of John Chastain and Elizabeth Clark). In 1820 I find James and family living in Warren County, KY and by the mid 1830s with the change of the borders between Barren/Warren/Edmonson Counties, he was show in Edmonson County until he died. I suspect that James was the son of Daniel Matkin (b. 1766 - 1784) and who lived in Warren County in the early 1800s. I also suspect that James had a brother (also named Daniel Matkin) who is also found in Edmonson Co., KY. He was married to Martha Moore and they moved to Macon Co., MO sometimes in 1850 as he is shown in the 1850 Census in both Warren County, KY and in Macon Co., MO. James and the younger Daniel had several property transfers around 1850. I have a lot of information on James Matkin and his family and will be glad to share with anyone. I am hoping to verify the parents of James Matkin and any help would be greatly appreciated. Mary Kay Bourgeois

    3. On our roll call, if you have missing ancestors in south central KY whose surnames begin with K through M, please feel free to post to the list. If you have information to help this individual, please post your reply also to the list. Just send your query or reply to: [email protected] My tip for today is in reference to the old indexes found in the County Clerk's office (and Circuit also). Many of these over-sized and extremely heavy old books have an original index prepared by the clerk. Remember that the only name indexed is the major party involved. As an example: In the probate records, the only name indexed is likely the name of the deceased. But, in looking at the actual file recorded in that book, you will find the name of the administrator/executor, the commissioners appointed to sell the estate, the names of family and friends who bought items from the sale, etc. See you tomorrow! GREGORY, formerly a citizen of Monroe county, Ky., died at his home in White Mills, Hardin county, Ky. on the 28th day of January, 1897, in the forty-third years of his age. Tiney Gregory, as he was familiarly known in Barren and Monroe counties, was born in Green county, Tenn., in 1855, and in 1866 removed with his parents to Barren county, Ky., and settled on Nobob Creek, where they lived for several years. He commanded the confidence and respect of all who knew him, and, as to enemies, he had none. He had the kindliest attentions during his sickness from his brethren and friends. The remains were interred in the cemetery at White Mill, on the 30th of January; Elder G. G. TAYLOR, of West Point, conducting the funeral services. (17 Feb 1897 issue).
