    1. [SCKY] Cumberland County - Norris marries Walker
    2. Hi all, It was during one of these "posting" periods that SKS pointed me to this couple on the IL census that allowed me to connect Samuel W. Norris to the Norris' of Cumberland Co. Now I'm hoping someone can help me find his wife, Emma Walker Norris who was born in TN [parents also born TN] in Dec, 1865, all according to the 1900 Census of Wabash, IL. Their children were named Lula Belle[m. Kenneth Ward], Sallie [m. D.J. Carter], Ethel [m.Wheeldon and Gossett ]; Beulah [m. Tucker ] and Jessie [m. Sherrod]. There may also have been a son Jesse James, enumerated on the 1900 Census where Jessie, the daughter with a different date of birth, was not enumerated. I have not found dates or places of death for them either. This family was enumerated on this census only [married in 1880-no census in 1890]. The girls were born in various KY counties as Samuel seems to have been a wandering blacksmith. Ethel, Beulah and Jessie ended up in Central City, Muhlenberg Co. Samuel and Emma are my husband's great-grandparents and Emma my brick wall. He is the grandson of Lula Belle Norris and Kenneth Ray Ward. All hints appreciated. Jane

    1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 21 NOV 2011 - ROLL CALL, TIP, ETC.
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good morning; it's Monday again! I won't be posting on Thursday and Friday of this week and in case I forget, I'd like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! This year I'll be spending a quiet time alone for the holiday and it will be a little harder on me due to the loss of my Mom and my family being so far away. But, I am thankful for many things. On the roll call - it's open now for the rest of the alphabet and any I've forgotten along the way. I hope you've possibly had some help with your brick walls along the way. Don't be a stranger in the future; feel free always to post your queries to the list; that's why we're here! As a quick tip; splitting hairs on the meaning of two words that we don't often think about. There is a difference when the word heir is used vs the word legatee. Legally, an heir is someone who is entitled to a part of someone's estate if the deceased did not leave a valid will and testament. A legatee normally is someone who is given property in a will. We seldom think of there being a difference and call both an heir - but there is a difference. Have a great day! 1. [SCKY] TIDBITS FROM THE GLASGOW (KY) WEEKLY TIMES
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Hart Co: DIED - At his home near Uno, Hart county, Kentucky, Isham H GALLOWAY, on the evening of December 16, after an illness of four months and one week. He was in his forty-fifth year, and had been a consistent member of the Christian church for nineteen years. He leaves a wife and two children (daughters), besides many friends and relations to mourn his loss. To know him was to love him. He was a good citizen and neighbor. Funeral services were conducted by Eld. J. C. HALL, at the residence on Thursday following, at 12 o'clock, after which the remains wee laid to rest in the Horse Cave Cemetery. During his illness he was a great sufferer, but bore his suffering with great patience, scarcely uttering a murmur of complaint. What a lesson of patience God has given to us in our dear father! He realized his condition, and often spoke of his coming departure, assuring those about him of his willingness to go, as he had made preparation. Oh, death is not the end but a beginning! In the goodness of God there is never so dark an hour but that there is a light ahead. It will take time, but bye and bye our hearts will be able to feel the balm sweetness of His promises. Over in the deathless land, greeted by the welcoming smile of a loving Master, a new life is their's for joy beyond all we are able to conceive in all the promises of the Gospel none are more precious than that we shall see him again, glorified, immortalized. May the comfort of the Gospel and the benediction of the Spirit abide in our hearts in Christian sympathy. (lengthy poem follows) His Daughter. (30 Dec 1896 issue). Metcalfe Co: On Thursday of last week, at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. Chas BRANSTETTER, near Summer Shade, Mr. Lemuel GLASS and Miss Tom Branstetter were united in marriage. Both are excellent young people and have many friends who most sincerely hope that all their beset wishes may be realized. (20 Jan 1897 issue). On the 6th inst., at Mt. Carmel church, three miles east of Edmonton, an immense throng was congregated to witness the marriage of Mr. J. P. YATES, of Edmonton, to Miss Anna B. JEWELL, of the Mt. Carmel community. Promptly at 11 o'clock ushers W. R. OLDHAM and R. C. GALLOWAY threw open the doors, announcing the arrival of the wedding party, which passed slowly up the aisle to the altar, where Rev. B. D. PORTER stood awaiting them. Attorney M. O. SCOTT and Miss Beaulah ANDERSON led the way, followed by Mr. Othello CUMMINS with Miss B. Oldham and Mr. J. W. Galloway with Miss Lillie Anderson; then came Mr. J. P. Yates, with his soon-to-be bride. Hundreds of admiring eyes looked fondly on while in tones of softest melody the Rev. Mr. Porter sealed the bonds of the union of two hearts that shall henceforth be inseparable, with an appropriate benediction. Mr. Yates is one of Metcalfe's very best young men, and the social circle in which he moves recognizes him as a fixed star around which they admiringly revolve. The bride he has won possesses all the attributes pertaining to the model woman. Reared from earliest childhood in the atmosphere of love and luxury, the bud expanded into the perfect flower whose purity and sweetness has won and retained the admiration of all who know her. After the benediction the happy bride and groom, accompanied by many friends returned to the home of the bride's step-father, Mr. M. L. DOUGHERTY, where dinner was served in that elegant style which has always characterized the royal hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Dougherty. Their many friends feel that the future of this happy couple will perfect the love, confidence and congeniality that has brightened their youth, and hope that this may lead them on to that more perfect life which we are all seeking in the infinite and beautiful beyond. A GUEST. (16 Dec 1896 issue). To be continued. 2. Bill & Ila
    3. Peter Price wed Nancy Arnett in Caswell Co. NC in 1805 then moved to Pulaski Co. KY shortly thereafter. By 1812 they had moved on into Green Co. where their children -- John (1810), Joseph (1807), Peter (1812), Nancy (1814) and Moses Calloway (1816) -- were apprenticed starting in 1821. It is assumed that Peter had died prior to that, but there are several possibilities: (1) both Peter and Nancy died prior to 1820 (not in census report); (2) Peter died and Nancy could not support children; (3) Peter abandoned family and Nancy died; (4) Peter died and Nancy wed again to a man who did not want the children; etc. Descendants of Peter's children have put together this information, finding each other through DNA testing. We are still seeking information on the fate of Peter and Nancy Arnett Price circa 1820 in Green Co. KY.

She married Robert Edward (Bobby) Lee in Edmonson County in 1832. We have found no record of her mother. Family legend says that she was walking in her garden, smoking a corncob pipe when she tripped over a cabbage plant, fell, and the pipe stem went down her throat, rupturing it and causing her death a few days later. We have found no record of her death, either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dan & Alice Lee

    1. [SCKY] PARRISH ... William

    3. Looking for dates, parents, siblings or any other information about William PARRISH.   William PARRISH born abt 1808-1810 died 1873-1880 Elizabeth GARMAN born about 1814 died 1855-1860 They had nine children   Hoping to learn the idenity of the parents and any siblings for William PARRISH.   There was more than one William and Elizabeth Parrish family about the same age in the area. This one was a farming family and they lived in Allen County, Barren County (Glasgow to Fountain Run), Monroe County, and Warren County (Smiths Grove - Elk Springs).   There was a death date of 13 Nov 1857 for one Elizabeth Parrish but not sure if it was this Elizabeth or the other Elizabeth Parrish. After Elizabeth died in the 1850's, William married Sarah "Sally" Ann Goad and they had two sons in Warren County (moved to Kansas after William's death). William died between 1873-1880. There was an 1876 death for a William Parrish in Warren County, but don't know if it was this William or one of the others.   William and Sally owned land in Warren County identified as "land Known as the Thomas Mason tract". I did not find any information about the "Thomas Mason" mentioned and did not find anything in the records showing what happened to the land when Sally and her sons left for Kansas in the mid 1880's.   William named his first son John Anderson and his second son Isaac G. Because the mother's maiden name was Garman and her father was named Isaac, I wonder if Isaac was named for her maiden name and her father. If they did name the children after relatives, maybe John's name gives a clue to William parents. I did find a Parrish female from NC married an Anderson and they came to Ky, but have found no connection to them.

    1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 14 NOV 2011
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good morning! I hope that if you see something I have posted and you have additional information that you will reply to the list. It just might help someone else on the list! Secondly; if you are looking for information on an ancestor who lived in the counties covered by this list with surnames beginning with N through R, feel free to post it to the list. Also, if you have information that could help this individual, please post your replies to the list - and you of course can write the person privately too. Tip of the week: Many times the only place where you can find information relative to the death of one of your ancestors is with the funeral home. Now - there were no funeral homes truly operating as such until the 1900s and many of these funeral homes have changed ownership over the years and the earlier records might not have been preserved. Most funeral homes maintain their records in either oversized ledger books or on index cards. They have no obligation of sharing information with you from their records; these are private records and could contain confidential information as to costs, payments, etc. However, if you contact a funeral home, many are very helpful in supplying information that would help the researcher. This could include: Name of deceased, date of death, location of death, cause of death, birth date, place of birth, occupation, whether served in the military, occupation, how long a resident of the state, how long a resident of the county, name of parents, place of birth of parents, and the names of wife/husband, children, brothers and sisters - sometimes with their locations. It can also include church membership. Finally, the records will show the date and location of the funeral and place of burial. If you do contact a funeral home, don't be pushy! You can explain to them that this was your so and so relative, you are a genealogist and have no interest in the cost of the funeral, whether they paid or not, the type of coffin, etc. If you write, enclose a SASE. Many funeral homes today are entering all their records on the computer and it might be possible that they can send you the information via e-mail or an attachment. Thank them very much. I have worked with our two major funeral homes here and established a good working relationship with them and they have opened up their records for me. I have finished transcribing through about 1961 for both. But again, if they say no, accept it and thank them!
