Just a tip for this week of which I'm sure you are aware. Census takers, from the 1850 census on, were supposed to list names in a specific order - head of the household, spouse if applicable, then the children in age order with the oldest on down. Then others in the household - parents, married children, boarders, etc. Have you ever been confused or tricked up when there is an older child listed under a younger child? Why? 1 - the obvious reason is that the census taker just made a mistake and had to add a child later or the informant had forgotten a child and he just tacked them on the bottom. 2 - is it a single child, or is a married child living in the household with his his/her spouse? As an example: John 25, Mary 20, Peter 21, Elizabeth 19, then others. Could John and Mary be husband and wife or Peter and Elizabeth be married? 3 - Could a sister of the head of household be living there and fall in the age bracket of a child, i.e., much younger than her brother? Could a male or female be sister/brother of the wife? 4 - was an older child really living there or just visiting and you might find them in another census record someplace for the same year? That happened? I know that in later censuses, the census taker was to note the relationship of each person listed to the head of household. But they sometimes didn't indicate step-children, wards, etc. And sometimes they forgot to change the surnames, but continued with their " marks under the surname of the head of household. And, if you're missing a male head of household, was he dead, were they divorced, or was in fighting a war, out west looking for fortune, in another county or state looking for better land? We just can't always assume! It is only by comparing other census records or other sources that we can be sure that each child is a child of the head of household. For those of you researching in Metcalfe Co; I just finished another book. It contains the probate records index (not the actual records). Included is: Administrative Settlements 1896-1912 Bills and Sales 1893 - 1923 Inventories 1867-1908 Settlements 1868-1888 In these indexes you will find the name of the deceased (not always indicated as deceased), names of administrators or executors, wife (allotment of dower), guardians and most times the children's name (wards of the guardians) and other miscellaneous. Also the original book in which the documents appear and the page number. I believe all of these records are available at the County Clerk's office. As with transcribing any old document, some entries are faded, some handwriting is atrocious - especially when it comes to initials. The index was written by many clerks and deputy clerks over the years and some of them really needed help! So, in some instances an initial will look like one letter- and in another entry, the initial will look like something else - and it's impossible for me to know if it's the same individual. Spelling of surnames is pretty consistent but the reader needs to scan through all to be sure. If you would like to see the index to this book, write me privately as usual. I'm glad to provide it as a help to you! I'll reply later today. Sandi

I found a family member who had a wife and children in Pickens county, Georgia. He evidently decided to move to Alabama without his family. There he married and started a new family. A few years later, he returned to the first family. There seems to have been no divorce of either marriage. And it was after the Civil War. There was a large movement of population following the War. In Georgia alone, many counties experienced a major loss of population, sometimes as great as 30% or more. Within my own family, many moved from Kentucky to Tennessee or Texas and points west. Just to let you know about a book I finished before Thanksgiving. If you'd like to see the index, write me privately - it is a surname index only. It will be later today before I can reply; back before the Judge for the 4th time this afternoon over Mom's estate. This is getting so wearisome! Here's the write-up: Index of Wills Volume 1: Did you ever become discouraged attempting to contact individual County Clerk's offices to see if your ancestor left a will there? This index book contains five south-central KY counties. Each county is shown separately and shows the name of the deceased, the volume where the will is recorded and the page number. Allen Co: 1824-1934; Cumberland Co: 1815-1923; Edmonson County: 1826-1947; Metcalfe Co: 1865-1933 and Monroe County: 1861-1946.There is also an explanation on each county showing when the wills are no longer available and the dates each volume contains. 52 pages including a surname index. I trust you all had a good Thanksgiving - and now the rush is on to Christmas. It seems to me that Thanksgiving is often overlooked and Christmas sales slide over the real meaning of the holiday. Just me... Michael John Neill is an excellent and professional researcher from IL and a recent tip he posted gave me pause because it is true. He stated that there might not have been a divorce of our illusive ancestors. Paraphrasing his tip and expanding. When we find a male ancestor with a new wife, we assume one of two things - the first marriage ended in divorce or the first wife died. Well - there's a third which did happen. It is possible that the husband walked out the door, moved to a different county or state and re-married, without a divorce. Possibly he assumed a different name - possibly not. With the poor communication between states or counties in the earlier times, the spouse often just re-married, lied about his marital status and started his life all over with a new spouse. It is said that this was common after the Civil War; I haven't found the statistics - if there are any. In looking through quite a few of the divorce records of the mid 1800s, the neglected spouse (normally a woman) will state that he left her bed and board and ran off with Susie Homebreaker and moved to parts unknown ... In southern KY, a trip to TN; in northern KY - IN, IL, MO. In eastern and western KY, any border state would do. The new couple would become just another couple moving to their state or county and no one asked who they left behind. And yes, wives did this too! Thankfully, most marriages that did not work out ended in a legal divorce, but then ... Have a great day! I hope this is not off topic very much. BUT I want to wish everyone on our list a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! I am thankful that my many grandparents had the intestinal fortitude to make the journey into the new world in the very early days of our country.Leaving behind many family members never to see them again. Thankful my ancestors migrated from Germany to Russia and then to the United States. But for the grace of God, I could be living in the Ukraine. Thankful I live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I have always had a roof over my head, clothes on my back and I have never been hungry. I have good children and grand children. I am thankful!!! Mary June Foulk Knoxville, Tennessee
I had meant to send you this information earlier but plain forgot. I don't know how many of you have ordered Social Security applications before; they are to me, expensive. But, they are so chocked full of information. Well, there has been a change in the rules. Unless you can prove that the parents are dead, you won't find much. It is now limited to 100 years from the birth date of the individual. I am including a link to a Canadian site which explains it a little better and it definitely is a downer for the genealogy world. This is a safe link.
