With the cooperation of the Barren Co Clerk's office, I am copying the marriages licenses with minister's returns. I'm starting with 1851 as 1799-1850 have been previously done. The original licenses prior to 1851 have been copied with the copies placed in acid free sleeves and put into books which are on the shelves at the Clerk's office. Thus, the precious originals will be stored safely away to prevent further loss or deterioration. Researchers can make copies from the copies in the books. I have just finished copying the 1851 marriages and put into book form, both paper version and e-book format. If you would like to see the index to this book, write me privately and I will send you the index at no charge later today. I've explained this in the past but a refresher course might be called for. In yesterday's post on Pioneer Cemetery the term was used many times that a lady was the consort of so and so. Not to fear; this couple was legally married! Terms change over the years. Here is the definition again: If Mary was the consort of John - she died, he was alive. If Mary was the relict of John - she died; he had predeceased her. Just old terms that we don't use today! Unless you, the researcher, were physically present at an event, it is difficult to know if the record was correct. We have discussed errors made on tombstones, newspaper obituaries, marriage dates and much more. Being human, records can be wrong. So, we need to check and double check to be sure the information we are reading is correct. As you know, deeds recorded at the County Clerk's office, wills bound in those huge old volumes and probate records can contain errors and are not the originals. They are handwritten copies of the original document, written by the Clerk or Deputy Clerk. They could have written something down incorrectly. The signature is not that of the original signer in most instances either. Normally, the information recorded is correct but mistakes can sneak in. Take for example depositions taken in a court action. Unlike what we are used to, the parties involved did not all show up before a judge on the same time and give testimony. Instead, the parties were summoned to appear before a justice or other court appointed officer or lawyer at a certain location on a specific date and time. There they gave their deposition reference the case in front of the official. Several could be called to appear at the same time. Then, as the depositions were given, they were written down - the questions asked by both sides (plantiff's and defendant's lawyers), and the response. These handwritten depositions were then added to the stack and transported to the court. When all the depositions were taken (sometimes taking months), the court read them and made a decision. Therein - errors could be made. Names could be spelled incorrectly, children or heirs forgotten, dates wrong, money amounts incorrect; varying testimonies from observers ... and the clerk writing it down not getting all the testimony correct. So, you might find a child, who you know was a child, not listed. Or the wrong location on an heir who lived out of state (who might not even have been found). We have to take the information contained in these depositions and counter check them against other written documents to see if everything matches. But, these depositions are full of gems. It shows the age of the deponent, his location, his occupation, where he lived relative to the parties of the case, how long he had known them, his relationship to the parties, etc. They are very important in our searching. Next: I have finished another huge book but cannot really offer the index as usual. I have transcribed the Barren Co male marriage index book, 1933 through 1983 Surnames A through H at the County Clerk's office. It's hard to think that 1933 is old but ... well it's getting there. The index book contains the year of marriage, the groom's name and the bride's name. In Barren Co, there are 8 index books: Male index 1798-1932 A - L, same M-Z, Female index for same period (2 volumes); then Male 1933-1983 and Female 1933-1983 (2 volumes). I have previously transcribed all the records up through 1932. This book contains 7,326 marriages and covers male marriages surnames A-H. I wanted to run it through the L's, but there were just too many! The marriages are shown in alphabetical order by the grooms name. It does have a surname index for the bride's - to have a full-name index would double the size of the book. It is 156 pages plus the index. I can send you the surname bride's index. I have flagged possible typographical errors (the book is typed not handwritten). African American marriages are noted through the 50's; after that date, no designation was made. I found marriages of individuals that appear to be from Monroe, Hart and Metcalfe counties based on the surname. I even came across one of our family from Green Co who headed over to Glasgow to be married! No place of residence is shown however in the records. If you'd like to see the surname bride's index, I will send that to you; e-mail me privately. Lastly, I am going to try to go back to the Puzzlers. Many of you have written and asked for this again. So, if Charles Hartley is willing to start posting the questions again on our website, I'll give it a try! I have to appear before the Circuit Court Judge on Wednesday to see if I am going to be called for jury duty for April and May - if I am, my postings might be a little more random! Have a great week! Pioneer Cemetery is located on College Street and Sixth Street in Bowling Green. It was a public burial ground. Looking at the history somewhat, in 1817, a one-room building was located in the cemetery which became the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Joseph B. Lapsley came to Bowling Green to pastor the church. He was from a noted VA family and had been the pastor at the Big Springs Presbyterian Church in Bardstown, KY. A cousin of his, William McDowell was the Sessions Clerk (he the son of Judge Samuel McDowell who had served as a Colonel in the Revolutionary War). Rev. Lapsley died in 1823 and was buried at Lapsley Hall, his home in Bowling Green. Oral tradition says that the home was designed by his good friend, Thomas Jefferson. Later, his body was re-interred to the Pioneer Cemetery where a table-topped tomb marks the location. This grave was located exactly where the pulpit had stood during his preaching years. Something happened to the church after his death - it either burned or was torn down and all the church records were lost. In Dec. 1831 a call was issued to Rev. Samuel Wilson Calvert to preach and he was able to locate 43 of the charter members. John Marshall, the current Session Clerk at that time, found most of the church records and re-copied. A new church building was begun. According to records, the first funeral held in the new church was for the pastor, Samuel Wilson Calvert. The charter members were: Andrew Wardlaw, William McPheeters, William McDowell, Benjamin H. Hall, Agnes Cowardin, Elizabeth Reece, Margaret Caplinger, Sally Barclay, Susanna K. McDowell, Samuel McDowell, July Cook, Mary A. Harney, Elizabeth C. Hall, Margaret McDowell, Lucinda Brashear, Ann Graham, Mary Russell, Susanna Campbell, Jane Barclay, Anna Brannon, Peggy Wardlaw, Elizabeth Howorth, Polly Morehead, Martha Ransdall, James Harney and James and Patience - slaves. The first Elders of the church were: William McPheeters, Benjamin H. Hall, William McDowell and Andrew Wardlaw. Next week, I will begin a listing of the burials in Pioneer Cemetery as of about 1970-71. I believe, and some of you Bowling Green researchers can confirm, that there has been a book published on the burials of the cemetery that might be more detailed and contain more burials than those I have listed. DEATH CLAIMS HON. JOHN W. JONES Prominent Citizen and Leader of Men Passes Away Tuesday Morning. WAS A PROMINENT LAWYER. Hon. John W. Jones died at his home on Maple Driveway, Tuesday morning at 7 o'clock. This means that one of the most prominent citizens of Southern Kentucky has passed away. Mr. Jones had been in poor health for several months and a few weeks ago he was accompanied to Chicago by his brother, Judge Sam E. Jones, where an operation for removal of the prostate gland was performed. This was a success and in due course of time Mr. Jones returned home with the trouble removed and on a fair road to regain his wanted strength. But made bold by his fast recovery, he was not temperate either in diet or exercise, and his strength was soon taxed beyond its power and death was the result. Mr. Jones was a man far above the ordinary in several respects. He had the power of leadership to an unusual degree. He was a member of the Baptist church and the Masonic Fraternity, and in both of these he led. He was the recognized leader of his party in the county, if not in the Congressional district. He probably came nearer knowing everybody in the county than any one else. He had been in the insurance business for a generation and for many years had been a leading attorney. It is probable that in this his kindness of heart was shown more clearly than elsewhere. It has been said that he did more charity practice than probably any other three lawyers in town, and this gave him great popularity. He was born in Edmonson County September 27, 1847, and came with his parents to Glasgow in 1859. His father, Judge Veachel H. Jones, was county judge for several years. John W. has held the office of police judge, county treasurer, and for many years has been master commissioner, which office he held at the time of his death. His wife, who was a daughter of the late Meredith Reynolds, survives him, as does six children, Messrs. Curtis, Veachel, and Vincent Jones, and Misses Sarah, Mary, and Emma Jones, all of whom live in Glasgow. His brother, Circuit Judge Sam E. Jones, and one sister, Miss Sis Jones, both of whom live at this place, also survive him. Funeral services were held at the residence yesterday morning at 9:30 o'clock, by Rev. A. Paul Bagby, pastor of the Baptist church, after which the remains were interred in the Glasgow cemetery with Masonic honors, all the business houses in town being closed from 9:30 to 11 o'clock as a mark of respect.(Glasgow Republican, Aug. 6th, 1908.) I need help with research in Barren County because I live in California. I understand that my 4th great grandfather, John Logsdon, was granted a tract of land in Barren County in 1804. I would like to have a copy of that record. In fact I would like to have copies of land grants, other land records (deeds etc), and marriage records on any one named Logsdon between 1798 and 1819 in Barren County. The reason I need to see the originals is I need to see the full names listed, correct dates, witnesses and in the case of marriages the person who bonded. I only have a few abstracts that were given me years ago but information was left out of the abstracts. Anyone out there willing to let me hire them to do this job please email me personally at [email protected] Also I have been trying to find tax records online for Hardin County, KY and I have had no luck. I can't even find the list online for Hardin County. Does anyone know where I should look for these things. I am very computer literate but have not used Rootsweb a lot and I'm lost. I'm sure a lot of you people working in South-Central Kentucky also are searching in Hardin Co. Thanks for your help. Gloria
