    1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING MONDAY, 26 MAR & PUZZLER
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Good morning! Monday's roll around terribly fast don't they? I wanted to share a story that makes genealogy worth it all. About a month ago, I was contacted by a gentleman in Christian Co who had found my name on one of my Gorin books owned by a lady there. This lady and I had corresponded back in the early 1970's on the Gorin clan from Christian, Logan, Warren and Todd Counties. Over the years we had lost contact and this gentleman hunted around until he found me (I was in AZ when I published the book he had). The lady had died and was an outstanding researcher. She had willed copies of all of her materials to several of the family members who she knew would take care of them This gentleman sent me a cd with two huge gedcom files of her entire research and it is really good. One thing led to another and he spoke of a young man in TN who was tremendously interested in the Gorin genealogy plus other lines resulting from marriages of the Gorin gals. They knew that I, after many years of hunting, had acquired the Henry Gorin Bible which I think every Gorin descendant knows about and has been hunting for. (A story in itself!) This young man (meaning younger than me!) called and asked if he could come visit me sometime soon to see the Bible. I agreed although I seldom handled the Bible due to its extreme age (the Bible was published about 1800). Yesterday, as I started to stretch out for a nap after church and lunch, he called and asked if they could drive up from mid TN. Well, we spent about 4 hours visiting with he, his wife and two sweet children; taking pictures, swapping stories. He knew very little of the early days of the Gorin family or how we all connected. I took them out to Glasgow Municipal Cemetery to see the graves of John Gorin here - brother of his and my daughters' line. Last night, when they returned home, he e-mailed me pictures of the Harrison cemetery which I would have never found; put me in contact with other relatives who are putting all the families together and expanded my knowledge of the Gorin daughters and their spouses. Moral of the story. A simple letter I had written in 1970 resulted 42 years later if my being given 6,000 plus new kin for the family tree (fully documented), new friends - and resulted in their branch being able to see the family Bible that had taken me 21 years to find. Don't give up!!! Sometime I'll tell you about my quest for that Bible and the most unusual place it was found! Keep looking, writing and you'll never know what your research will result it! Now - Charlie has posted the answer to last week's puzzler on the website. I told you that I was going to give you an easy one to re-kick off the puzzlers. Now this one ... most unusual! I will be in total shock if any of you get the answer and there is only one thing I am looking for. Have fun! 2. Paul Gaines
    3. Here's the scenario. Single mother JONES gives birth to a son. It is later determined through DNA that the true father is a SMITH. People change their names all the times, (see pro athletes). This same SMITH family has found that there are no more male's to continue this SMITH branch of their family tree. Can the JONES son of the unmarried mother change his name to SMITH legally and be recognized officially as continuing this particular SMITH family branch?

    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Several of you have asked for this. This is the same book I mentioned last week which lists all the marriages 1933-1983, surnames A-H, with the book showing bride, groom and year of marriage. I offered the index to that book which listed the surnames of the brides. To make it easier for you; this book is done in female order (i.e. bride!). The index, which is a surname index, shows all the grooms. If you would like to see this index of the groom's names, write me privately and I'll provide it as soon as I can! 1. [SCKY] OF SPAM, FORWARDING LINKS, JOKES, ETC.
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Since we had the unfortunate event of getting spam forwarded to the list, let me toss out a suggestion or so. I trust you all. However, when my name is in your address book and you send out a joke, cartoon, a link that has to be clicked on ... no matter how much I trust YOU, I almost never click on any link or forward on what has been forwarded to me. Why? Because names in address books in your e-mail program can be hacked very easily. The spammer or the virus bearer then sends out e-mails to everyone in your mailbox and it looks totally legit because it has your "return" address on it! "Why, this e-mail is from Cassandra; I've known her for years, it must be safe." But, lo and behold, it's not from Cassandra (made up name of course!); it's from a spammer and that link might open me up to a virus, trojan or whatever. Even in the most beautiful of forwards - pass this on to your best friend, it's friendship day, etc. etc. there can and often is, embedded a virus or a door thru which a spammer can get your e-mail address and password - and those of everyone in your mailbox.. Now - what I do which helps eliminate most of the fake e-mails. If I need to forward a picture or an article (or an index to my book), I announce it in the email (or you have requested it), and many times, I'll send an e-mail and said - "I will be sending you an attachment in the next e-mail. It is clean." That way the receiver is much more secure. I run a virus program, a firewall - everything possible to be sure that my system is clean. I keep it up to date, check it frequently to see what it has caught. None of us ever mean to send out spam or a bad link but it does happen. If it does, we need to change either our e-mail address (which is hard when we're on hundreds of lists) or our password. I would also like to recommend a safe search engine that I've used for several years - and of course, I get nothing for the recommendation. I got sick of the ads popping up for my local area on the sites and knowing that the major search engines track you. I use Startpage.com as my search engine. It works just like the major ones, has the same hits and advantages. And, it does not track you. Experiment with it - go to a site thru the regular search engine and see ads for your town or you suddenly get e-mails from a place selling things you were searching for. Then go to Startpage.com and go to the same site. Bingo, the ads are gone and you are anonymous. Even if I know the URL of a regular site I use all the time (outside of the rootsweb sites), I'll log in on Startpage.com and then type in the sites' name I want, click on it. It's just a little extra protection. That's it for tonight - just be careful with attachments, forwards, links and searches. It'll keep you safer! 2. Sandi Gorin
    3. Just some miscellaneous items on the last day of winter. 1 - Over the weekend I finished the 1853 Barren Co marriages, copying the original images. I am going to likely do two more years and then take a break for a tad. This year was particularly interesting. Clerks were in the process of changing from the 1/2 page cream colored license with notes on the back to a 8x14 blue paper. At the top is the license; the bottom half is the marriage certificate signed by the minister and witnesses. One thing I will say - the Clerk wrote a lot better than the latter! The minister wrote all over many of the certificates showing the ages and places of birth of the couple, sometimes with additional information. Not all have extra information but there are two that I love. One minister wrote, after listing the major witnesses, "and all the other boys in town"!. Another wrote after the witnesses' signatures "and 100 more for whatever good that does." They had a sense of humor! There were 132 marriages in 1853 and sometimes the spelling of names in the license is different from what the minister wrote. Some are faded, many torn from years of handling. But I have tried to edit each page and bring out the information as clearly as possible. These are copies of the actual image. If you would like to see a copy of the index to these marriages, write me privately as usual. 2 - There will be no posts tomorrow. I am going to be touring western KY for the day. 3 - By popular request, today begins the Puzzler series again. I have started you off with an easy one. If you would like to take a guess, click on the URL in my signature line called "Sandi's Puzzlers". The web site to which you will be taken is safe, enter your e-mail address and your guess and it will come directly to me. I will respond as I have time. 4 - A little tip for the week. How many times have your read old correspondence, newspaper articles or depositions and someone refers to another person as "cousin" or Grandma/Grandpa. I've found that in the south, no matter how close or distant the relationship, one is considered a cousin! This does not always mean that this person is a close cousin! The same with Grandma/Grandpa ... it was often used as a term of respect for an older person. Another term used a lot is referring to someone as aunt or uncle. This is also a term of endearment used by a white person for an African American. Possibly a freed slave who stayed with the family or some other close bond of affection. People called these dear people aunt or uncle to show their feeling of respect and fondness of them. 5 - For those of you in the Bowling Green area, remember: The next meeting of the Southern Kentucky Genealogy Society will be held Monday, March 19, 2012, in the Kentucky Building at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm. The speaker will be Sue Forshee Cooper who will discuss Researching Across the State Line and Other Borders. Sue is a native Kentuckian who now lives in Tennessee. She helped establish the Simpson County (KY) Archives and Museum and served as the Director for over 10 years; editor of the "Jailhouse Journal" newsletter. Sue was commissioned a KY Colonel in 1992 for her preservation work. She also is a member of Association of Professional Genealogists, Simpson County Chapter DAR and the Middle TN Genealogical Society and has been doing professional genealogical research for about 15 years. 3. Jim, Not sure if this will be of any help to you, but here goes. The surname Van Hooser sounds very similar to the name Van Deusen, or Van Doozer or Van Duzen, plus other variations. This family were one of the original settlers of New Amsterdam (later New York state) and lived in the Albany Co area for years, from about 1630 onward. The various family members spread out to New England and beyond from there. regards, Colleen Lill I am looking for the names of the parents of Sanford Walker born 1815 in Kentucky. 1. [SCKY] BARREN CO 1852 MARRIAGES
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I just finished the 1852 marriages for Barren Co also. As a better explanation if I confused you, these are the actual images of the licenses, not typed copies. There were 94 marriages in 1852 and also include the marriage return from the minister. Many of these also show the witnesses' names (some totally unreadable) and some have information on the back from the minister showing the name, ages and place of birth of the bride and groom. Again, if you'd like to see the index - just write me privately. I'll send as soon as possible; we're having a severe thunder storm with some intermittent hail right now!
