And, an self-addressed, stamped envelope. If Lucy is not in Tracy, then do the same for Liletown. Funeral home people are among the nicest in the world for helping family historians. Most of the time they will send what you need, sometimes more than you asked for, and often will return your check. Not that $5 or $10 is going to break anyone's bank account - not at the price of death certs in some states! Mine for one... Oh yes, the reason for the letter rather than over the phone information, is you want the documentation. :-) Good luck! 3. Little by little I'm conquering the new computer system with a couple of major problem areas. It's driving me slightly crazy and I wish I had an expert in Windows 7 in the area! Outside of that, Charlie has posted the puzzler for the week. Only a few of you were able to get last week's puzzler; let's see how you do this week! As a hint, I am NOT looking for a specific person's name - rather a characteristic. Have a great week with some great research! 1. [SCKY] BARREN CO ROADS
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. One of the most difficult tasks for the early Barren County researcher is attempting to find out where their ancestor lived. As you know, deeds spoke of land lying on the nearest waterway and the boundaries marked by trees long gone and stones now plowed under. The Barren Co Order Books indicate that one of the first things necessary was laying out roads and appointing men responsible for keeping the roads "in order". This meant creating the road, maintaining it (keeping trees, grass or trash etc.) off the road and widening it as necessary. Those roads were not pretty! References are given in the order books of laying out a road, appointing supervisors of certain parts or precincts of the road and the "hands" to work under him. Fines were often imposed when a certain road was unpassable or when a land owner did not want a road cutting across his property. Roads were also altered in where they ran. Starting in 1820, a "roads" book was kept. In it is laid out the various precincts and the location of the road and the names of the supervisor plus hands. I'll be starting a series for 1820 that shows these precincts and those involved in maintaining the roads therein. 1st precinct: Pikesville Road. From town (Glasgow) to Bell's. James DODD surveyor. 2nd precinct: Preston CONLY. Surveyor - Pikesville Road from Sarah BELL's to Skaggs Creek near GILLOCK'S. 3rd precinct: William FISHER. Surveyor of the Pikesville Road from Skaggs Creek at Lawrence GILLOCK's to the Caney Fork of Peters Creek. 4th precinct: James BARTON. Surveyor from the Caney Fork of Peters Creek to the Monroe Co line. Now, let's look at various roads. All these roads were also broken into precincts and the supervisor and hands would have lived along this road or close to it. Lovings Mill Road. 1st Precinct: James WILLIAMS, Surveyor. He was responsible from the state road to Skaggs Creek at or near the mouth of Boyds Creek. 2nd Precinct: John TILFORD, surveyor from Skaggs Creek at HAMMON's old place. 3rd precinct: Jacob PECK, surveyor from Hammond's old place to Peck's cotton jim (gin). Russels Road: 1st: Erasmus TRACEY, surveyor from the Caney Fork of Peters Creek to Reubin HOGG's. 2nd: Reubin HOGG, surveyor from his place to the Monroe Co Line. Scottsville Road leading to Pikesville: 1st precinct: Hardin SULSER, surveyor from the Allen Co line to the Monroe Co line. ELLIS's Mill Road: George YOUNG, surveyor from the north end of Joshua CROSS's land to the Pikesville Road. Martin's Cabin Road: 1st precinct: George DAVIS, surveyor from the State road to Peters Creek near Alexander DAVIDSON. 2nd precinct: Alexander Davidson, surveyor from Peters Creek to the Big Barren River near WIdow BRIDGES. To be continued next week. 2. Hello Listers, My gg grandfather, George Preston SMITH and wife, Lucy were on the 1880 Barren Co., KY (Tracy area) census living next to daughter and son in law, Eliza Jane and Richard Scarberry. George died in 1886 and I assume buried in the Tracy area. In 1890 my gg grandmother, Lucy K. Narramore SMITH died near Liletown, Green Co., KY living with her dau, Eliza Jane and son in law, Richard. Must have moved sometime between 1880 and 1890 to Green Co., KY I can't find any record of their deaths in Barren or Green Co., KY . My question/s : Is there any record of deaths then in a local newspaper for county deaths and if Lucy died after George in next county over, would her body be taken back to where her husband George was buried ??? Not sure if it was the custom to try and bury spouses together even if the deaths took place in another area of the state. Perhaps a church record would have some record of their passing, but have not found one yet. No record of George and Lucy in this 10 years time frame since they were not landowners. Any help would be greatly appreciated...........one of those brick walls that I can't seem to break down on my SMITH line. Thanks, Charlene Smith Lewis

    3. I usually don't cross-post from other lists, but several of you have just subbed to the Research list. I know this would be available in the archives of that list, but several have asked to see yesterday's post. So I'm sending it here. I post every Thursday. Sandi TIP 1026 – NAMES MENTIONED IN THE CERTIFICATE BOOK OF THE VIRGINIA LAND COMMISSION, 1779-1780. In these records are contained names of some of the earliest settlers of Kentucky. They are a series of entries that perhaps every pioneer who actually settled in Kentucky prior to 13 Oct 1779 is cited. The Virginia Land Commission met at St. Asaphs (Stanford) Harrodsburg, Bryant’s Station, Boonesborough and the Falls of the Ohio. Every settler had the opportunity at these sessions to establish their claims to land in what was to become the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This was a time of confusion for the settlers when it came to receiving title to their lands. They knew that they had to build a cabin, raise a crop of corn and then most returned to Virginia to wait. When he came back, he brought his family with him. However, another settler might have come to the same spot and not known of the first settler’s intention to return and settle on the same land but likely not in the same area as he would have noted the cabin and the growing crop. Pioneers were seeking the best land – and that usually included a nearby waterway or a spring. It soon became more and more complicated as more people came in and many settled in previously claimed land. Virginia had to do something to straighten this all out. The Legislature of Virginia met in 1779 and passed an act authorizing the Governor of the state to appoint a special commission. He traveled to what is now Kentucky and sat as a Court. Here he heard proof and settled many titles by issuing certificates to the rightful claimants. The Act itself, very long, appointed four Commissioners who could not be a resident of Kentucky County. They sat at Court and heard the proof of claims. They had the authority to issue a certificate for 400 acres if approved. It could also include a preemption right of 1000 additional acres and adjoining the 400 acres. The fee per claim was 10 shillings for each 100 acres. An additional 10 shillings was charged as a fee for the clerk who issued the certificates. Most of the claimants were successful, but some were not when the settler exercised rare modest and declined to accept the preemption right. He was content with just the 400 acres. And, there were some instances when the claimant was only entitled to his preemption right and not to an actual settlement right. When this happened the certificate gave him a preemption right only. A few of the names of the original commission members included William Fleming, Edmund Lyne and James Barbour (sometimes spelled Barber in error). Then Stephen Trigg is cited who served “in room of” (instead of) James Steptoe. The list of names included in these record show almost every early settler of Kentucky. Other names of note included Boone, Kenton, Calloway, Harrod, Todd, Shelby, McGary, Logan, McAfee, Whitley, Clark, Floyd, Crockett, Whitley, Fields, Meriweather, Combs, Davis, Slaughter …. names well know in our early days. The entries showed a notion of the number of acres claimed, how the fees were paid, the issuance of the certificate and most often, the name of the person. For the next few weeks, and with the help of records kept by the Kentucky Historical Society, I will be listing brief information on the entries contained in the Commission’s report. Thomas Barton – 1400 acres as heir of law of William Barton, deceased. No date or location. Daniel Hawkings – 1400 acres, St. Asaphs or Logan Fort, 15 Oct 1779. Hugh Leaper – 1400 acres Philip Tramell, 400 acres, Waters of Paint Lick Creek, settled 1 June 1778. Thomas Lovell, 10 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, settled 1 Jan 1778, cites Hanging fork of Dicks River. Robert Todd, 10 Oct 1779, 1400 on Hickmans Creek adjoining lands of Col. John Todd and lands of Lt. Collins, Walter Overton. Improved the land in 1776. James Harrod, 19 Oct 1779, acted as guardian of James McDonald (infant). He heir of Patrick McDonald, improved land in 1776, Gilberts Creek, branch of Dicks River. Patrick was sick at home & died. Charles Cameron, 19 Oct 1779, an assignee of Henry Pawling who was assignee of James Dorchester, waters of Dicks Creek. Improvement by Dorchester in 1775. James Corbun, 19 Oct 1779, heir at law to Samuel Coburn (deceased), 1400 acres, on Mulberry Creek, adjoining lands of Squire Boone, improved in 1775. William Phelp, 19 Oct 1779, 400 acres, north of the Main North Branch of Green River, about 50 miles above the mouth of Barren River. Actual settlement Feb 1779. William Phelps, Jr, 19 Oct 1779, 400 acres, north side of the main north branch of Green River, about 50 miles North of Barren River; actual settlement Feb 1779. Nicholas Phelps, 19 Oct 1779, 400 acres, same area, 2 miles below the land claimed by Wm. Phelps, Jr. Julius Sanders, 19 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, Head of Boons Mill Creek, 4 miles from Dicks River, improved land in 1776. James Combs, 20 Oct 1779, 1000 acres, Howard’s Creek (about eight miles above Boonesborough), built a cabin May 1775. Cuthbert Combs, 20 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, at an Indian town on north side of Kentucky between Lulbegrud Creek & Howards Creek. Made corn in 1775. Benj. Pettitt, 20 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, on waters of the Hanging Fork, a branch of Dicks River & Green River. Improved 1775 and resided there 12 months. John Logan, 20 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, mouth of St. Asaphs Spring; raised corn in 1776. William Logan, 20 Oct 1779, 1000 acres, raised a crop of corn in 1776 and lived there 12 months. Benj. Logan, 20 Oct 1779, 1000 acres, St. Asaphs, waters of Dicks Creek. Settled and raised corn in 1775. David Barton, 26 Oct 1779, 1400 acres – postponed until meeting at Boonesborough. Azariah Davis, 26 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, Salt River, one mile from Harrodsburg, includes a spring, a large house that he built, he raised corn in 1775. George McAfee appeared then and contested this claim. Davis has a right to the land. Thos. Barton/Baston, 26 Oct 1779, Barton’s Creek (branch of Salt River). Improved the land and raised a crop of corn in 1776. Was ¼ mile from McAfee Station. Robt. McAfee, 26 Oct 1779, 1000 acres, Town Fork of Salt River which included his upper station. Raised corn at Boonsborough and improved land in 1775. Henry Wilson appeared and contested the claim since he had built a cabin on the same land in 1775 prior to McAfees’ improvement. Testimony given by many; decided that Henry Wilson is entitled to the land. Henry Wilson agreed that the inhabitants of McAfees Station would have peaceable possession of 100 acres of land and could reside there for seven years. They can use the timber for building cabins and enclosing the land & water for use of the garrison. Wm. McAfee, 26 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, Salt River adjoining where Harrodsburg is built. Raised a crop of corn in 1776. Azariah Davis appeared and contested the claim; witnesses sworn; Wm. McAfee has the right to the land. James McCowan, 26 Oct 1779, 1400 acres, Salt River between the lands claimed by George & James McAfee. Raided a crop of corn in 1776. To be continued next week. 1. [SCKY] CERTIFICATE BOOK OF THE VA LAND COMMISSION 1779-1780
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. Just a short note this morning as yes, I am still having difficulties in getting my system purring again. It all lies in the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit systems (I now have the latter) and two of my major programs not running. I am tired and frustrated to put it mildly. Plus I am having difficulties with dropped signals from my ISP which takes me off and on line. I know many of you are subbers to my KY-RESEARCH list. For those who aren't, just a note that I am running a series from the Certificate Book of the Virginia Land Commission 1779-1780. This is a marvelous record of the earliest settlers in Kentucky as they try to untangle already becoming confusing land claims upon which they had settled - and many times others claiming the same land. They had to prove they were actual settlers by building a cabin (or something resembling a cabin!) and grow a crop - normally corn. These records contain the names of those earliest settlers as they appeared before a commission appointed by VA Legislature; most describe where the land was, when they made improvements on the land (i.e., cabin and corn), how long they had lived on the land, etc. Last week's post resulted in 3 emails to me from people who finally found a record of their early KY resident. If you're not on this weekly list (closed to posts, read only) and would like to be; send an e-mail to: [email protected] and put the word subscribe in the subject line and in the body of the email. 2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. Good morning ... I think! Some general things this morning: I'm back on line but still 75% still totally confused at the differences between XP and Windows 7. I'm still trying to find where the system put files, where various controls are and how to do this and that. I've found programs that will not work, even in the compatibility mode and things look different. Myk e-mail program, which I love, is working - but in a reduced capability - I can't do all that I used to! Hopefully it will all fall into place and I'll be back to normal soon - whatever that is! So, if I stumble around a bit, bear with me please! Next - Charlie has posted the next puzzler on the website. Thank you for all the answers to the previous one, you did well! Go try this week's puzzler! Before the shut-down for computer change, I finished the Barren Co Male Marriage Index I through R, 1933-1983. As with the previous book, I made a female index - surname only. If you would like to see the female index, write me privately and I'll try to find it and e-mail it to you! Now to get a cup of coffee and tackle the rest of the unresolved challenges! 1. [SCKY] Epidemics
    2. I am currently filling in holes in my grand daughter's Meek family. I have found where this family (Knox Co TN) had 10 children with only 2 living in 1900. I have found the names of all but one male born Aug 1883. All these babies died by the time they were a year old with the exception of a 13 year old who had TB. One baby died from measles. I find it odd that so many children, in the same family, did not live beyond a few months. Two of the daughters died within 3 days on each other in 1904. I SUSPECT they both had TB as well as their father who died in 1912. (No death certificate for him.) I know typhoid and flu as well as cholera was prevalent in those days. Is their another explanation for so many dying so young from 1881-1900? Just curious. Mary June Foulk Knoxville Tennessee

    3. I finally finished the 1855 Barren co marriages. These were not in the best shape and I'm glad to get them copied while most is still readable. There are again 123 marriages this year, still the lovely 8 1/2x14 blue paper. All the names but two are readable and I found those names. Some of the witnesses names defy interpretation, but they're there, along with extra information on many as to age, where born, etc. etc. Again, these are the actual images, not a typed copy. 1. [SCKY] BARREN CO - 1854 MARRIAGES
    2. Sandi Gorin
    3. I knew I forgot something ... Over the weekend I also finished the 1854 marriages in Barren Co. I have reproduced copies of the original documents as with the previous ones. Instead of sending those interested an index which includes lots of names ... I prepared a list of the marriages included - surnames only - so you can see the name of the groom and the bride together. There were 123 marriages in 1854, many with supporting documents and added information. If you would like to see a copy of the names married this year, write me privately as usual.
