    1. [SCKY] IN CLOSING 4/30/2012 - PUZZLER
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. As we say goodbye to another month in 2012, why not try your hand at the puzzler? Thank you for all your guesses last week; only three got the answer for which I was looking, but you all worked hard! This week's puzzler likely will be quite easy. I know all of us are looking forward to having the 1940 census indexed! I am starting to receive notices through ancestry.com (I have our family tree there) of "possible matches" - but let's hurry up and get to Kentucky!! Have a great week and happy researching! I know some of you are experts on Monroe Co and thought you might be able to help Mark. He included some attachments which I of course, can't post to the list. If you have knowledge of this Louisa Goad, would you write Mark directly? He is not on the list. His email address is: [email protected] and he gave me permission to post to this list. Thanks, Sandi Here is what Mark said: It was brought to my attention the URL http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kymonro2/folklore/fountainrun2.html. The birthday of Louisa Goad is what I'm questioning. Many of the details look correct, Mother, father, husband, death date, residence, but the birth date seems way off. It says she was born in 1884, but one of her grandsons (my grandfather) was born in 1881. :) The information I have for her, found from a death record (which I believe was mis read by ancestry.com as Good instead of Goad) and census records put her birth somewhere closer to 1832. Is there any way you can help me confirm or disprove that? If there's more information you need, please feel free to ask.. I'm just in rush right now to get to work. 1. [SCKY] A TERRIBLE LOSS TO GLASGOW'S HISTORY
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. A friend of mine called this "murdering history." On Tuesday the historical Zion Huggins home was hit by arson. The Huggins house, located on Cleveland Avenue in Glasgow, was rocked by an explosion late Tuesday afternoon. The house was vacant, lately owned by the late Frances Rootes Edwards. It was being readied, along with its contents, for an estate sale on June 9th. Heirs to the property, which includes Sam Terry IV, had been working in the house, inventorying the contents. At first, nearby residents thought they had heard a clap of thunder until flames were seen and the fire department was called. The home has long been known as the Zion Huggins house; a portion of which was built of log in 1810 - making this house one of the oldest in Glasgow. Huggins was a well-known nurseryman and had extensive orchards covering most of the neighborhood near his house. He was also a distiller and stored brandy in the basement of his house. According to Sam Terry, when Gen. Bragg's troops moved through Glasgow in the Civil War, the soldiers learned of the contents of the basement they were reputed to have had a brisk business there and confiscated the brandy and were selling it out of a basement window. The Edwards family had owned the home since 1945. According to officials, this is definitely arson and started in the front foyer. The Dickinson house was afire on April 20th and sustained damage from a fire that has also been deemed suspicious. It also was unoccupied and is on West Washington Street. We can only hope that the arsonist is found soon. I would like to thank Sam for permission to run this story and for his history of the Huggins' home. 3. Rachel (Parrish) Bevel   What happened to her after 1880 census?   Rachel was born about 1846 in Kentucky. In 1850, her family lived in Division 1 of Barren County. I found her marriage in Warren County 1878, to John Bevel, born in Virginia.  He died 15 months later.  He had been a resident of Warren County, KY for 2 years at the time of his death.  His parents/family is unknown.   She is a widow and living with one of her brothers in the 1880 Smith's Grove, KY census.  I have not been able to find any record of her after the 1880 census.  Her father was a farmer and they lived in Allen, Barren, Monroe and Warren Counties.   Looking for any clues about what might have happened to Rachel.

He died in Page Co on 10/5/1779 . (See Trimble). I don't know if anyone knows exactly what happened to Abraham. I think he may have lived with son Daniel in the Hestand area of Monroe Co and was probably buried in a family grave around 1806-1810. That's my 2 cents worth. 3. Hello Listers, I recently came across some information about the Wheeler and England families in Monroe Co. They lived there from the mid 1830’s to beyond 1870 and I am hoping that perhaps someone on the list might have some additional information to add to what I have learned. My ggrandfather was Richard Wheeler, born 1837 in MC, the son of Lewis Wheeler and Rhody Gentry. I was given information recently that he might have been the natural father of Thomas B Wheeler b 1855, daughter of Nancy Creek (later married to Barton England). Richard left MC after 1860 and moved to Kansas, where he enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War. Two of Richard’s brothers – James and Simon married sisters to Barton England – Nancy and Melinda Jane. There were other connections to these families as well. The information I was given recently suggested that the Wheeler and England families were not well liked in Monroe Co. There was also a suggestion that daughters or female descendants of Thomas B Wheeler were involved in witchcraft. Does anyone have any information about these family stories? I recently sent an email to Dayton Birdwell in care of the Tompkinsville Library and asked if he knew anything about these stories, but I haven’t received a reply as yet. Thanks for any help, Colleen Lill Canada

    3. Just a head's up. For many of you who have been on the list some time; you know that periodically a book company spams the rootsweb lists. The sender is always different and telling how they were able to get wonderful genealogy books from this site etc. It is impossible to block them; with a constant changing of the sender's name, it's not caught. Well, they're at it again. Volunteers are trying to get ahead of this; as of last night, they were spamming any list beginning with "D" - there must be several of these individuals. Others spam the various lists like ours. If a message gets through to these lists - don't respond. It's just pure spam and the company doesn't have the best reputation. Just delete the message.
