    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. For those of you who are Civil War buffs, this is an interesting story of the proposed raising of the CSS Georgia. The Confederates, lacking money and experience, attempted to build a warship; the North had the funds and expertise. This is the story of the Confederate warship Georgia and the expensive efforts to raise it. This is a safe site. 2. Charles
    3. Everyone, I'm on on the Mammoth Cave Area website and Norman Warnell posted that he was commissioned to make a map of the entire park and plot the former landowners. I found my ggrandmother's land, some of which I knew about and some I didn't. I sent the link to Sandi first because of her cautioning us about clicking on links. This is legit and Sandi has checked it out and heard the presentation about it. So if your ancestors owned land at Mammoth Cave before it became a park, it's worth checking. http://161.6.109.206/mammothHGIS/ Charles

    2. John D. Sissom
    3. I may be crazy for looking for a SMITH, but Jeremiah Moulton Smith, the first child of William Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth (Betty) Street was born ca. 1765, in Cumberland County, Kentucky, married (1) an Unknown lady, ca. 1789.  He married (2) Diana Henson, in Barren County, Kentucky, ca. 1806.  The first marriage produced 7 or 8 children and his second marriage 3 children. Jeremiah Moulton Smith died after March 25, 1817, and before May, 1817, in Barren County, Kentucky.   I am seeking the name of his first wife.  Anybody interested in this line?   John

    1. [SCKY] 1856 BARREN CO MARRIAGES
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. Finally, after learning how to do a few things on my new system, I finished another book. These are copies from the original documents at the County Clerk's office. Many are torn, frayed and faded; they've existed many years. I've cleaned them up to the best of my ability and all are readable. If you would like to see a copy of the surnames (bride & groom) marrying this year, send me an e-mail. I'll send it to you later this afternoon. Thanks, Sandi Barren County KY Marriages, 1856. Photo copies of 150 marriage licenses and certificates, along with permission slips when needed. Scanned from the original documents. Contains bride and groom's name, date of bond and date of marriage, witnesses and minister. Many show place of birth or residence, how many previous marriages, age and some show parent's names. 168 pages including full-name index. 1. [SCKY] 1940 Census
    2. Sharon Clark
    3. Hi Linda and everyone, I am not sure about how to make corrections. The spelling is horrible on some of the pages - along with the handwriting. Two different people type up the same page, and then they are sent to someone else to see if what we typed are the same. We have to type them up the way they are spelled on the page. Even when I find the name in a previous census - or in TX, maybe on the TX Birth Index - and type it the way it should be, the person [arbitrator] who checks what I did will change it back to the way the census taker spelled it on the 1940 census. I was reading something that said after it is all done that they may eventually display all three pages in the index: what I type and what the other person types and what the arbitrator submits. Hopefully there will be a way to submit corrections. Good luck on your research. I haven't looked for my folks yet but I am hoping to find them. I asked my sister where they were living in 1940 and she thinks they were living in Dallas. When I download something to index, they come alphabetically by county. Last night I downloaded 6 pages and they are from Dallas. My family probably won't be on those pages, but someone might index them today. I am excited. Best wishes, Sharon [email protected]

    2. Hello, I think the address below works; I originally clicked on a link on one of Richard Eastman's newsletters. Try going to: https://ident.familysearch.org/cis-web/pages/registration/registration.html? lng=en&referrer=FamilySearch%20Indexing%20Client Then click on register for a new account or something like that. If you already have a Family Search user name and password, that will work. You have to download and run a program on your computer and then you are ready to go. Last night I said it was fairly easy - that was before I did a page where the census taker had terrible handwriting, but I finally finished it. Good luck. The more people who are indexing the census, the quicker we will find our folks. Best wishes, Sharon Clark Fort Worth, TX [email protected]

    1. [SCKY] WHY YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL CLICKING ON LINKS ETC.
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. This has nothing to do with genealogy but everything to do about clicking on links or being tricked into supplying information without checking first. Lately, there has been a lot of "hacking" of passwords and likely you've received an e-mail from someone you knew with some unrelated message with a link to follow. Every time that happens, I try to inform that subscriber (or friend) that his password has been hacked and that the hacker is sending out e-mails that look like it comes from the individual, but doesn't. I have to put that person's e-mail address on "moderation" which means all their posts will come to me and I decide if they are legit or not. If they are ok, I release to the list; if not, they are discarded. Last May, as careful as I am, I had my computer system lock up and a message that I had been infected with a trojan. There was no way to get out of their site; no matter what I did, I was trapped in their site. It looked totally legit as the computer appeared to be doing strange things. They offered a program which would clean the system of this trojan and, without thinking and just shutting down the computer, I downloaded the program for a mere $59.95. Guess what - THAT was the trojan and my system continued to go "wild." I shut down immediately and called and then drove to the bank as I had put the price of the program on my credit card. Within 10 minutes, my card was cancelled - but they had already tapped into my account and would have had a field day. They had my credit card number, name, address - everything. Thankfully, my bank was very, very alert but in the time it took me to go one mile to the bank, my card had been compromised. The bank refunded my money on my request only - and a print out I'd provided about this trojan. Today I received an email from a security system company (four in fact) which are totally legit; I have checked them out. They informed me that my credit card had been hacked by this group and that they were under federal investigation. There were 3 people, all from Moscow, Russia. To prove that this was a legit e-mail, they listed the information on my card including name, credit card number, amount, my address, etc, all except the security code. All this was in the hands of this group.! They said (a little too late) to cancel this credit card account. It took awhile! Since my money was refunded, I am giving this e-mail to my bank if they want to investigate further and try to get their money back. Thankfully, I'd contacted my computer tech who came in and deleted the trojan before it did any damage; shutting down immediately had stopped its spreading throughout my system. So, this is just a warning. These crooks are getting very sophisticated in getting your information. If you shop on line as I do, be careful. I had my password hacked on Face Book; they caught it and locked my account - someone in Mexico was trying to get to my account! I have learned again that even though it's frustrating, change your password on a regular basis. Make it harder for a hacker to figure it out - another thing I must rectify. So - even though you get an e-mail from a friend and it looks suspicious - don't click on it. Write that friend and ask them if THEY sent the e-mail. If not, delete it. Some are just spam, some are very serious. Rootsweb does a good job of catching spam and spoofed e-mails to the lists. If in doubt, the message comes to the list administrator and we have to go to the web site and look at it. We can then release it to the list or discard it. But - they do sneak through as the hackers make them look more and more legitimate. I have been sending an e-mail to the individual to whom I'm forwarding something (involving a link to a website) and alerting them that it really is from me or a personal message so the receiver knows it's me!
