    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. Joe on our list sent me the following site to check out. It is a list of all sorts of places that hold genealogical materials that you can search on the web. A few are paid sites which also have limited free searching capabilities. I haven't checked out all of them, but am familiar with many. I can't recommend the sites but I believe they will be interesting to you. 1. [SCKY] METCALFE CO NEWS
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. I don't fund raise on this list but one of our listers, Judye Hafling, wrote me of a worthy project going on in Metcalfe Co. She is a very active member of their historical society there and someone I've known for many years. Judye noted: " that the Metcalfe Co Historical Society is moving into our fund raising for the Old County Jail. We have just completed a 2013 Calendar with old pictures selling for $10. We are still trying to get old documents etc. removed from the jail so we can proceed with restoration. We are still "fighting the fight" of being allowed to protect and preserve documents over seventy years old and place them all together hopefully in the old jail." As a diehard advocate of saving these old documents, I not only wish them well but hope that funds can be raised to save them. If you have any interest, you can order the calendars at: Metcalfe County Historical Society P.O. 1. [SCKY] ROOTS & BRANCHES - CUMBERLAND CO
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. Joyce Stover mentioned in a post this morning about her writing a newspaper column for many years in Burkesville. As you know this is a difficult county for researchers due to Court house fires. I know Joyce to be a very thorough researcher and have chosen to include her the books she has available. I think they might be a great help to those researching in Cumberland. For pricing information and ordering details, please write Joyce privately at: [email protected] ROOTS AND BRANCHES, THE COLUMN - VOLUMES 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 The author, long-time genealogy researcher Joyce Stover, has been researching and writing a weekly genealogy column for the Cumberland County News since 1992. Joyce also has the following: Death Certificate Index of Cumberland County Deaths The new book from Roots and Branches Publishing is a comprehensive record of information taken from all available death certificates for Cumberland countians for the period of 1911-1953. The collection of 4127 certificates was compiled over a period of 2 years by Joyce Stover and a database was created with the basic information contained on the certificates. The entries were then supplemented by additional information as found by Joyce Stover and Joe and Mary Skipworth. The additional information is color-coded to show that it was not listed on the original document but came from other reliable sources. The book is divided into two different sorts of the information, each sort containing 115 pages. The first sort is by name of deceased. The second sort is by place of burial. Information contained in the database: name of deceased; birth date; death date; father's name; mother's name; name of spouse; sex, race and marital status; place of burial; and additions or corrections. Again, contact Joyce privately if these could help you! 1. [SCKY] Turners and research
    2. Ann M. Small
    3. Thank you, Sandi, and thank you, Joyce for all you do and all you share. Joyce, I particularly thank you for confirming the information I had on the Turners. I believe but I cannot prove except by circumstantial evidence that one of my ancestors, Susan C. Turner, b. about 1843 in Kentucky and d. July 18, 1868 in childbirth, was a daughter of Shadrach Turner and Ann Eliza (Elizabeth?) Hayes. She is listed as S. C. in the 1850 census. She married Whaley Jonas Bryant probably in late 1859 or 1860 as she is not listed in the 1860 census with her parents; however, I cannot find them anywhere in 1860. If you want or need any more information about what I have, I will gladly share. Thanks again for all you do. Ann

    1. [SCKY] A MOTTO FOR RESEARCHING
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. I want to thank everyone who have made posts to the lists or written me privately about the "unhappy camper" who wanted everything there was from two early census reports. There has been sufficient said I think and I do appreciate your most kind words. We can end the discussion here. I told one lister privately something that maybe you can use as a motto in this crazy thing called genealogy - whether you are doing research for someone else or working on your own family tree. I give you permission to use it anytime you need it. When I worked for the IL State Police, I had a sign over my desk which sort of sums up all the problems of life - and researching: "The difficult I do immediately The impossible takes a little longer Miracles by appointment only." Have a good rest of the week and again, thank you! 1. [SCKY] HART CO - THE L&N SUED AGAIN
    2. Sandra K. Gorin
    3. As the railroading industry grew, so did lawsuits against them. There is found in "The Southwestern Reporter, Volume 146, May 22 - June 12, 1912, a lengthy case involving one Joseph AGE of Hart Co. The decision reached by the Hart Co Circuit Court was appealed to the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Abstracting from the case at the Court of Appeals: S. M. PAYTON of Munfordville spoke for the appellant; Benjamin D WARFIELD of Louisville; SIMS & RODES of Bowling Green and WATKINS & CARDEN of Munfordville represented the appellees. Joseph AGE was an employee of the L&N as section foreman at Glasgow Junction. On the afternoon of 8 Oct 1910, he was run over by one of the cars of the L&N and so seriously injured that he died the following morning. His death as charged to the negligence of the L&N in the operation of its train. Age's administrator sued to recover to recover damages. L&N denied liability and pleaded contributory negligence. The case had gone to trial and when the evidence had been presented, the court instructed the jury to find for the defendant which was done. What happened. On the afternoon of that fateful day, a south-bound local freight train, No. 31, arrived at Glasgow Junction (Park City) about 4:30 and for about 10-15 minutes after its arrival it was engaged in switching around and through the yards to unload freight. It took on some empties that were there and left off some cars that were to remain there. In order to do this, the caboose and two freight cars were left standing on the mains tract almost opposite the freight depot. It was noted that the passenger depot was south of there. At this time there was what was known as the "house track" where four cars were standing. After the caboose and two cars had been cut loose from the train, the conducted went into the caboose to make out his report. The engineer, fireman, two brakeman and a flagman were left in charge of the rest of the train. There were between 24-25 cars. One of the brakemen walked down the track to the south and after the train had passed beyond him, he threw the switch so as to let it in on the house track. After throwing the switch he passed over to the other side of the track and stood there for the purpose of transmitting to the engineer the signals from the rear brakeman who was between him and the freight depot. The flagman was near the freight depot for the purpose of seeing that the four cars that were standing on the track were coupled when the train backed into them. When he was ready, he signaled the brakeman next to him to back up. This signal was transmitted by the rear brakeman to the head brakeman who had thrown the switch. Then the engineer was signaled and the train was immediately backed up at about 2-4 miles per hour. It backed down on the house track and against the four cars that were standing there. Immediately following the impact, the flagman heard some one halloo. He looked and saw Age down in between two of these cars. He immediately gave the stop signal and it was passed on as rapidly as could be by the other employees back to the engineer. The engineer at once stopped the train but not before it had gone about 2 car lengths and dragged Age along the ground and run the wheels over him. He was so seriously injured as to cause his death. To be continued next week. 1. [SCKY] Turner questions and Sandi's experience
    2. Joyce Stover
    3. In regard to the Turner questions submitted, the Shadrach Turner who married Rebecca Page was the son of Jeremiah Turner and Rachel Ross who settled on Mud Camp Creek in Cumberland Co., KY. Jeremiah was the son of the older Shadrach Turner who died in Henry Co., VA, ca. 1784. The exact location of old Shadrach's holdings has been determined and may be found on various site on Internet. That line of Turners lived on Town Creek just at the edge of Henry Co. In regard to the Shadrach Turner-Rebecca Page marriage, it was the groom's second marriage. His first wife was Ann Eliza Hayes. That marriage produced at least 8 children. I have two John H. Turners in my database, one being John H. Turner who was born ca. 1840, son of Wyatt N. Turner and Louisa Clarkston. Wyatt was the son of the William Turner who was born ca. 1788 and whose wife was Frances. The other John H. Turner was born ca. 1844 and was the son of Jesse Jefferson Turner and Mary Lane. Joseph Jefferson was the son of William and Frances Turner also. I don't have a spouse listed for either one in my database so can't help there. Some researchers claim that William (b. 1788) was of the Shadrach Turner line but I've never been able to prove any connection. On the contrary, I've found more clues to dispute the claim. I hope this will help Dean and Kathy a little with their questions. And Sandi, I sympathize with you completely. For the listers who don't know this, I consider Sandi to be a very valuable friend and we often help each other. We understand the problems of researching for others because we have both done that for years. Also for listers who do not know, I have researched and compiled a genealogy column for Cumberland Co. News for 20 years as of the first of July, 2012. The columns are mostly about Cumberland Co. pioneer families. My gripe is people who contact me, demanding that I give them information on their family line because 'they know I have it'. Dear listers, the reason I have it is because I have worked long hours and have written columns which appeared in the newspaper. Each of these columns has been included in one of the five volumes of "Roots and Branches, The Column" which I have indexed and made available to the public for very nominal fees. I didn't really do the books for a money-making venture but as a convenience to my readers. Sandi does the same. She works long back-breaking, eye-burning hours in order to to make information available to the public that they would have to spend long hours and much money to obtain if they were doing the work themselves or hiring a researcher. So don't fuss because Sandi and I sell our books to help meet expenses and because we need to supplement our income a little. It's like biting off the hand that feeds you. And that's the end of my soapbox speech. I feel better, having shared my feelings, and I hope Sandi does, too. To her I say, keep up the good work. There are many people who appreciate you and your hard work! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2012 2:01 AM To: [email protected] Subject: SOUTH-CENTRAL-KENTUCKY Digest, Vol 7, Issue 121 Today's Topics: 1. And teachers present lessons. Today, I'm going to share a personal account as it might be a learning experience for all of you who need to hire researchers or have done research for others. I was really bottomed out today and almost gave up doing research for others after 24 years locally. I am still saddened but decided it only makes me feel badly and accomplishes nothing else. And, maybe a lesson can be learned. I am not seeking sympathy. The names have been changed in this e-mail to protect the source. I was hired, reluctantly, to do a 4-hour research job on a male I'll call John Smith. I tried several times to discourage the individual as the only thing he/she had was that John had been found on the 1810 and 1820 Barren Co census. But, the individual was determined and I finally conceded to try with NO guarantee for that early time period. I repeated several times that I could not guarantee I could find anything. Yesterday, I spent all day working on this individual, throwing in an extra hour at no charge -? and after the preponderance of evidence was sorted through, I knew that her John Smith was not the John Smith of Barren Co. I had been instructed to work with the 1810-1820 census, not to worry about land records and see if I could gather all possible information on John, where he came from (supposedly one of the Carolinas); his wife's name, parents' names, etc. So I did what any researcher would do: 1 - checked tax records to see when he started paying taxes and when he stopped, giving a better idea of his length of time here. 2 - checked the deeds anyway to see if there was a reference backward to the Carolinas for a land sale, settlement of estates, etc. 3 - checked church records to determine if he had joined a church here which would normally verify his wife's first name at least and perhaps adult children (he was born in the 1780s). 4 - checked marriages to see if any of his children married here and possibly showed a permission slip from he or his wife. 5 - checked Circuit Court records that are available to see if he had been involved in any case here. 6 - checked miscellaneous books- surveys, tavern bonds, wills for the death possibly of family members, guardianship bonds, indentures, strays book, etc. to pick up any paper trail. 7 - Went to the Cultural Center to check for family files or books done on the individual's family. Etc. etc. Today I received a scathing e-mail from the individual with language I could not repeat on the list. Basically the individual accused me of taking her money and running; it seems he/she wanted me to gather ALL the information from the 1810-1820 census only and that I had wasted her money in searching all these other records! The only thing I can think of is that the individual thought that the 1810-1820 census would list wife, children, where they came from and everything desired. I wrote the individual again and explained why a researcher has to check other records and that the census records of that date show only the head of household and "tick" marks for various age categories of the possible children. No reply of course. Under threats of being blackmailed basically and the individual's attempt to destroy my reputation, I go on. Lesson: If you hire a researcher, there is never a guarantee that he/she can find anything, especially in the earliest times when they left the county. The researcher must also check all the available records for that time period in the hopes of finding some document, some family connection, some record. When the person is not here, there is nothing to be found. The name being searched was fairly common and although one of the man's sons said his father was born "in Kentucky", a search brought up about 50 other men with the same name scattered all over the state. But the individual had found John's name on the census and stopped looking. The individual will not accept that the man with that name here is not the correct one even though the dates of birth are off 40 years on the one the individual wants and the one here; none of the children show up ..... the mind is made up. So, we all need to remind ourselves that sometimes research jobs yield limited or no results. There is no full-proof guarantee. We work hard, we don't cheat people, and we earn our fee. And that we must be willing to look elsewhere and accept that maybe the biography was wrong or the name all too familiar. I'm off my soap box now. Again, no sympathy needed on this but it is the first time anyone has spoken so fiercely and refused to acknowledge they were wrong! Maybe some day the individual will look at the report again and say "gee, the guy in Barren Co can't be my ancestor!"
