Good morning - I'm doing 3 posts in one. First, not all of my lists are operational yet. KYBIOGRAPHIES, KYRESEARCH and KENTUCKY-LEGENDS are not working yet. Trying to be patient! I have sent Charlie the answer to the last puzzler of a couple of weeks ago and a new one. Check in periodically; he'll post as soon as he can. From the Lexington (KY) Herald, Tuesday, 2 April 1907, Volume 37, issue 92, page 3. "PEACEMAKER KILLED. James Dilly Shot in Mouth in Trying to Stop Fight - Son Wounded in Arm. EDMONTON, KY., April 1. - James Dilly was shot and instantly killed near Wisdom, Metcalfe county, while acting as peacemaker and endeavoring to prevent a fight in which his son, Bada Dilly, had previously been shot in the arm. Blaine Pierce is accused of firing both shots, and will be arrested when he is located, but thus far he has not been apprehended. "The details of the killing are not definitely known here. It is reported that Pierce and another man, whose name is not known here, became involved in a difficulty in front of Dilly's home. Young Dilly went down to where they were and endeavored to quiet the trouble, it is said, when he was shot in the arm, the bullet breaking the bone. The elder Dilly then went to the road, where the men were standing, and was shot through the mouth, being instantly killed." From the same paper, Thursday, 4 April 1907, volume 37, issue 94, page 6: "ALLEGED SLAYER ARRESTED GLASGOW, Ky., April 3. - Blaine Pierce, who, it is said, killed Jim Dilly near Wisdom, in Metcalfe county, Sunday afternoon, was captured near Beckton in the southern part of this county." I'm going to do the puzzler a little different this time. I will send Charles Hartley an answer to put on line but I think this one needed a little larger explanation. My question was: You found your male descendant on a church register, but not his wife. How could that be? You gave me some great answers and I'd like to go through some of them. 1 - He wasn't married yet. That is a possibility; his marriage might have taken place later and the clerk hadn't entered her name - or showed her under her maiden name if she was a member. 2 - She was deceased. True. She possibly had died ... but in most churches, her name would still be listed (sometimes for many years) with the notation "deceased" and _possibly_ a date of death entered. 3 - They had divorced. Again, a possibility. But, in most church books, her name would still possibly be there with a line through it or some notation. 4 - She had committed a grievous sin according to church rules. Good thought. When this occurred in many churches, her name would still be shown with the notation "excluded." The terminology varied from denomination of denomination - in Baptist churches and others, this is the term used and normally the date of exclusion. 5 - She was not a member. Very true. She possibly had not joined the church. 6 - She was a member of another church. Very true. If you will read through the old biographies, you will find that in many instances the wife held membership in one church and the husband in another. She might have come from a long line of Methodists and he of Presbyterians - and they kept their memberships in the denomination of their choice. Pastors of the earlier years also served in up to 4 churches a month. He might join one of the churches - his wife might keep her membership in another of the churches he pastored. 7 - Only male members, or head of household were listed. No. Women were always listed. If you will think back of all the church rosters I have posted over the years, there were women! Some churches kept separate lists - they separated the male members from the female members in different lists. But they were listed - making it difficult sometimes to figure out which female belonged to which male and which ladies were single! But they were listed! Children were not listed until they became a Christian in Baptist Churches and others and had been baptized. Some, as in the Presbyterian Church would list the child and his/her parents when they were baptized as infants or confirmed in other denominations. In most churches of the earlier times, the clerk kept an active list of members. He faithfully updated this list annually or every few years. These were entered on the church books along with the minutes of the monthly business meetings. Thanks for your participation! I'll be coming up with another puzzler soon. This sounds *interesting*! If you are on another rootsweb list such as Warren, Hart, Monroe, Metcalfe, etc. please forward this to those lists. Sheila Rush, Manager, Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site, 38 Old Mulkey Park Road, Tompkinsville, KY 42167, 270-487-8481 sent the following notice: The 9th US Infantry (reenacting unit) is coming back to Old Mulkey June 14th & 15th! Their working Civil War camp is complete with soldiers and civilians. Unit drills, discussions of weapons, Sunday service, and a three round volley at the Tompkinsville National Cemetery (a.k.a. Old Soldiers Cemetery) are always part of their visit. But this year they've added a unique and rarely represented element to the weekend ... a Civil War wedding! This is the first REAL wedding of members of their unit, opened to the public for educational purposes. Period attire is not required to attend the wedding. However, period clad individuals will be seated first. The reception will feature period music and dancing. Also, *weather permitting*, wet plate photography will be demonstrated. For a complete schedule visit http://www.parks.ky.gov/calendar/details/civil-war-living-history-camp-wedding/21436/ For additional information contact Sheila at the number shown above. Note by Sandi: There was a write-up on this wedding in the Glasgow Daily Times. The couple met as performers in this re-enactment. Due to a total lack of sleep last night (love those storms) I have nothing prepared today and my brain is too tired to think of anything. So, I'm going to finish the mini series on caves. In Monroe Co, in 1922, the following caves were listed, said to be all north of Tompkinsville. A rock house in sandstone on the land of Dr. E. E. Palmer, 7 miles north of Tompkinsville. Stains on the ceiling, flint chips among the gravel. Only 2-4 feet space between the floor and the roof; goes back about 20 feet - very cramped space. No man could stand erect in here. McCreary Cave: a mile north of Dr. Palmer's. Entrance is 60-70 feet across and goes back a good hundred feet. Two branches then start. Has a strong spring. On one side a ledge, no human evidence found. Belcher Cave: 7 miles NW of Tompkinsville. Also known as Mill Cave because a gristmill near the foot of the hill below it is run by the outflowing stream. Entrance is high and wide; vault if fully 100 feet across each way. Bedrock is exposed in places and the earth is not more than 2 feet thick. Cave on John Black Tuley's land on Meshach Creek, 6 miles NE of Tompkinsville. Two human skeletons wee found in a small opening which is also called Bone Cave. The room is no more than 10 feet across, not in a position for human residence. Thought skeletons were Indian. but might have been used for temporary camping. That's it! I'm not sure I can do this every week, but - by popular demand as people say - the puzzlers are back! I will TRY to post a new puzzler each week. For those of you who are new to the list - or have forgotten! - if you will click on the URL in my signature line called Genealogy Puzzlers, you will be taken to a safe website that is maintained by Charles Hartley of this list (since I'm too old to learn html coding!!!). The puzzle of the week will be found there. If you want to take a guess, fill in the blanks! This will send an e-mail directly to me with your guess - no one else will see it, no addresses are accumulated! I will reply directly to you "yes or no". Be sure to type your e-mail address carefully, this is the only way I can reply! I don't scream, cry or throw tantrums if your guess is wrong!!! Give it a try - Sandi -- Colonel Sandi Gorin Website: http://www.gensoup.org/gorin/index.html Genealogy Puzzlers: http://www.gensoup.org/gorinpuzzles/index.php --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Looking for proof for the DAR that Joseph Wallace Meredith was the son of Charles W Meredith of Edmonson Co. so many people tell me there isn't any proof due to courthouse fires, but is there a Bible, a will, anything documented anywhere on this family/ DESPERATE Jean Sadler
