George THOMPSON ' on the 27th June 1874, there died in Grahamstown the Rev. George THOMPSON aged 73 held by all to be a man of great holiness ......... His funeral which we all attended was said to have been the largest ever held in Grahamstown..........It was said that he had been found dead on his knees at his bedside, and that all the money he had in the world was half a crown. No wonder he was poor and ill-nourished, for he gave everything away ; even when ill, if a devoted sympathiser sent him some little delicacy, a tender piece of chicken, some good soup or jelly, or a light pudding, he would at once get up and run off with it, and, with great joy, give it to some poor, sick, needy person ( child or adult), entirely oblivious of his own sore necessity."
