ALLAN HAY of Maritzburg, which sad even took place at a Nursing Home in Durban on Monday night, 30th October. He had a very serious breakdown in health about two years ago and although he rallied from this and several subsequent attacks, he never entirely regained his previous robust state of health. It was deemed advisable eventually for him to live at the sea level, and in March this year, he left his home "Glen Doune," Alexandra Road, Maritzburg, for the South Coast, accompanied by his wife and daughter. During the seven months he was there an improvement in health was noted, particularly recently, when he was undergoing a new form of treatment. However, his friends' hopes of a cure were not to be realised as he suddenly collapsed on Thursday, the 19th of October, remaining unconscious, except for very brief intervals, until his death. The passing was very peaceful, he simply slept away. The late Mr. ALLAN HAY, who was the son of Capt. Alexander ALLAN HAY of Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, Scotland, came to Natal over 30 years ago. He became associated with Mr. Leonard LINE in the well-known stockbroking firms of Messrs LINE and HAY, of which he was managing partner and from which he retired 18 months ago, the partnership having lasted 26 years. He married Miss Helen KELLOCK of Kirkcaldy and had a son and daughter. His son, Edward, a subaltern in the Indian Army died of enteric at Mandi while on recurring duty in 1917. To his wife, who has nursed him devotedly throughout his illness, we offer our deepest sympathy and also to his only daughter, Dorothy, who grieves with her mother over the loss of one of the finest and most genuine of men. A staunch friend, a devoted husband and father and a splendid business man, well-known for his uprightness and sterling character. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Accountants in Natal, ex-Chairman of the Maritzburg Stock Exchange, and a Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute. Although deeply interested in public affairs he took no active part in them. all his energies being concentrated on his business and in his home. The funeral took place at the Prestbury Cemetery yesterday afternoon, the body being followed to the grave by a large number of friends of the deceased gentleman. The service was conducted by the Rev. George GRIEVE, and among those present at the graveside were Mr. Leonard LINE. Mr. W J O'BRIEN.
