Hi Elspeth, I managed to get a copy of the 'Readers Digest Atlas of Southern Africa' ....the copy I have was published in 1984. I was very surprised (and amazed) to find that there are thousands and thousands of farm names printed on the maps. I have succeeded in finding where many of my various family farms were situated just by looking at the maps. One does need a good magnifying glass, patience and a hi-liter.....I was brought up not to deface books, but I have to confess to having marked the various farms in different colours to indicate to me which branch of the family the farm had belonged to....it's a pity there are limited hi-lite colours available. One list member managed to find a copy for about £5 in New Zealand. My copy came from South Africa (I managed to find a copy through 'The Bookfinder General' but of course these days it is so much easier to find books on the net) was considerably more expensive. The postage alone was prohibitive as it is a very large book....to save money I got it posted by land rather than by air! Dear Tombi, Elspeth and other listers, You can download the trial (free) version of the map-viewing software OziExplorer at http://www.oziexplorer3.com/eng/oziexplorer.html If the program won't run and says it needs a file - Google that file and download it to the program file. Then go to http://www.madmappers.com/countries.php?TY=R where all the SA250k and SA50k topographic maps are available free (raster maps). These are the most detailed maps, those you normally buy at the Surveyor General's office. Farms are also marked on these maps. It takes a bit of bandwidth to download, but the result is a digital set of SA maps with no equivalent. Thanks Paul, Unfortunately I have a very elderly computer and wouldn't like to try to download anything into her (especially a large file). I have to say I'm also old enough to enjoy actual books. I'm not too old not to enjoy looking at all the houses still standing which are to be found on Search.... It was amazing seeing how the house we lived in at 31 Hillbrow Street, Berea, Johannesburg looks now....it looked nothing like this when we lived there in 1973. Quite fun being able to walk up and down the road! Hi Paul This is exiting news, thanks. I have accessed the site 'madmappers' as per your link but cannot find any way of downloading the maps, please advise.
