Good morning listers Does anyone know if there are any records of divorces available in SA? It would be from about 1919 onwards. Also, are birth certificates only available from the Dep of Home Affairs? When I approached them to try to find my grandfathers birth certificate I was told that if I didnt have his ID number they couldnt help me!. He was born approx 1875-1878 !!!!!! I would appreciate any help or advice. Many thanks in advance Kind regards Sybil Banister-Jones

Hi Sybil If you search for - How to find birth records - on Ancestry24 it gives one a good idea where and what you can find - Birth certificates were introduced officially in the late 1800′s and was not compulsory until 1905: Cape: 1895 Natal: 1868 Transvaal: 1901 Orange Free State: 1903 According to various sources Civil Registration dates are as follows: Province Births Marriages Deaths Cape 1895 1700 1895 Natal 1868 1845 1888 Transvaal 1901 1870 1901 OFS 1903 1848 1903 Probably the best option (unless he was born in Natal), would be to try and search for a records of your grandfathers Baptism.
