    1. Re: [ZA-EC] BSAP Corporal Frederick FITZGERALD
    2. Nikki
    3. Hi Elspeth Here he is! Kind regards Nikki Extract from Men Who Made Rhodesia , The British South Africa Company's Police by A S Hickman 1960 "Corporal FITZGERALD, Frederick (later Captain) A native of Kingwilliamstown, Cape, described by his friend, Cpl. C.H. F. DIVINE, as "long and lean with a charming smile, a good shot and a splendid horseman....the very best type of colonial soldier", and by Capt. A.G. Leonard, his commanding officer, as a colonial of Irish descent "fiery, impulsive, yet full of initiative". He attested on 1/3/1890 and served in E.Troop at Macloutsie, where a group photograph taken there in 1890 shows him seated outside the corporal's mess, a well-built figure with a slight moustache, wearing smasher hat, grey-back shirt, breeches and top-boots. In August, 1890, he was in charge of horses grazing 8 miles from Macloutsie. In December, 1890, he was sent by capt. Leonard from Fort Tuli on a reconnaissance patrol to look for a reported Matabele Impi at the junction of Macloutie and Shashi Rivers. On 13/12/1890 E.Troop, on its march from Macloutsie to Fort Tuli to relieve D.Troop, halted at Semalale, which was then in charge of Cpl. C.H.F. DIVINE, who asked his troop officer, Leonard, for a transfer to D.Troop, as he did not wish to remain on base duties. Leonard agreed, but pointed out that he had no N.C.O. to relieve him, as due to the shortage of native transport drivers, he was using FITZGERALD to drive a wagon and span of sixteen oxen. Divine made out that he could do the same and thus was relieved by FITZGERALD, but would never have succeeded except for the latter's help, inspanning for him and giving him some tips which enabled him to reach Fort Tuli. FITZGERALD was promoted to sergeant on 22/5/1891, and was at FortTuli in June of the same year at the time of the anticiapted Boer incursion from the Transvaal under Col. Ignatius Ferreira. He became a sergeant-major at Tuli Depot on 15/9/1891, and took his discharge on 11/12/1891 As an illustration of his sportsmanship, Divine relates that he spent a few days at Fort Tuli as FITZGERALDS guest. They rode out on a Sunday morning after buck, FITGERALD suddenly dismounted, and came to the aim at two splendid roan antelope about 400 yards away. But he held his fire to wait for Divine, remarking, "Sorry Charlie, old man, its your shot". Divine missed and the buck diappeared, but he was tremendously impressed by FITZGERALD's treatment of him as a guest. Later, as a sub-inspector, he was in charge of the Mashonaland Mounted Police at Fort Victoria, where in 1893 he assisted Major Allan Wilson in training, drilling and equipping the Victoria Rangers, of which as a captain, he commanded No.1 Troop in the Matabele War, 1893. near the Shangani River on the march into Matabeleland he went out with a raiding party on 24/10/1893, and sent in 1,000 head of cattle and 900 sheep and goats. At dark he rode into camp with Capt. H.J. Borrow ; they breported that they had seen no Matabele but had burnt some kraals. He is reported to have done excellent work throughout the campaign and was mentioned by Major P.W. Forbes, commanding the column, for special services. On 17/11/1893, with Capt. Napier, 100 men, a maxim, and a 7-pounder, he was left in charge of the L.M.S. Mission at Emhlangeni ( Inyati) when the main column moved on. Later he rejoined it, and on 4/12/1893 was killed in action with the Shangani Patrol. The bronze figure of FITZGERALD on the Shangani Memorial at World's View is said to be an exact likeness." -----Original Message----- From: Elspeth Muirhead Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 1:02 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] British SA Police Hi Nikki Not sure if you are doing general look ups for people.
