Hi Folks, I know that there are transcribed journals. But I seem to recall that someone said that the later journals are held in England someplace. I would love to read excerpts from 1870 and up. These don't seem to be available. Does anyone know why and how can I find them? Thanks so much. Christine (Researching Bell/Heber)
I'm not sure where you live. You may have heard about holdings in England because of my transcriptions of the Grahamstown Journal, but these only go up to 1853. This is because I have access to original newspapers held at the National Archives in Kew, but later editions are held at the British Newspaper Library in Colindale http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/blnewspapers/newsrr.html where they don't allow digital cameras, so any transcriptions would have to be done on site - a slow process. I don't live in London so transcribing the later editions is not really an option for me. The British Library has copies of GTJ (not totally complete) up to 1864, after which I believe it is listed as The Journal. I live in hope that they will be digitalised as part of the process the BL has initiated of putting all its newspapers online, but I suspect the South African ones are a long way down the priority list. However, there are of course copies of GTJ in South Africa in various repositories. The Cory Library in Grahamstown springs to mind, but I am sure there must be copies held elsewhere.
