Dear Readers While looking through a very unkept graveyard in Durban I came across what seems to be the grave of Dennis Alfred Platt. The headstone reflects that he died of wounds sustained at El Alamein in 1942. Could any of the Platt family confirm that he was in fact buried in Durban and that this definately his grave and merely a memorial ? It also appears that he is probably a distant relative of Robert Moffat the well know missionary. In the same graveyard are buried Robert and Ellen (nee' Platt - here is the connection with Dennis Platt) Moffat, son and daughter in law of Robert Moffat mentioned above. Robert Moffat was also the father in law of David Livingstone, the great african explorer. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Ian Dwyer
Hi Ian Anton Dil has very kindly posted a copy of the MOFFAT tree which appears in Cecil Northcott's book: "Robert MOFFAT, Pioneer in Africa' published by Camelot Press in 1961. You can see the scan of the tree on Anton's blog site at: http://a-brickwall.blogspot.com/2011_08_21_archive.html. Looking at the tree I see that Robert MOFFAT - son of the famous missionary- (1827-1862) m. in 1851 Ellen PLATT (1823-1891). The tree also lists five children for them. Anton is also happy to do look-ups, so there may be more on your PLATT family in that book. I have a tangential interest in the MOFFAT family because of the link to the TREDGOLD family. Best wishes Craig -----Original Message----- From: ihdwyer@wol.co.za Sent: Friday, January 06, 2012 7:57 AM To: south-africa-immigrants-british@rootsweb.com ; south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com ; south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: [ZA-EC] Dennis Alfred Platt Dear Readers While looking through a very unkept graveyard in Durban I came across what seems to be the grave of Dennis Alfred Platt. Morning, I am trying to do the WEBB family and see that Thomas WEBB married Louisa PLATT in 1864 in Grahamstown. That is all I have. Can you make any link to them? Hi Rod There must be a link here....Natal...Isipingo area. Below and excerpt from "Natal Sugar Pioneers" http://www.genealogyworld.net/rose/nuggets/pioneers.html SIDNEY & LAWRENCE PLATT These Yorkshiremen arrived in Natal within a year of each other, possibly attracted by cotton prospects in the Colony. Sidney, however, bought land at Isipingo in 1849 and Lawrence secured 50 acres near his brother's property, naming the farm Prospecton. At first the Platts, like many other early farmers, grew beans as a cash crop, but in 1852 Lawrence joined Mack and Birkett, also of Isipingo, in sending an ox-cart to Morewood at Compensation to buy cane-tops. Lawrence Platt's first mill, like his brother Sidney's, was ox-powered but they each soon acquired a steam mill. Lawrence Platt died in 1886, and his work was continued by his youngest son Alfred, born in 1853, to whom he had given Prospecton at the end of the Anglo-Zulu War 1879. Alfred Platt died in 1938 - in 1945 the Prospecton Estate was amalgamated with Tongaat Sugar Co Ltd, with Cecil Platt, grandson of Lawrence, as a director. Cecil died in 1950, aged 68. Hi Ian, I have been working away at Dennis Alfred Platt I have figured out a whole lot more about the Platt family and have about 270 individuals in my database. I have spent hours on it and am reasonably sure its a good reconstruction. If anyone needs info please let me know. I am stuck on Edward Ashworth Platt born in 1844 and married to Petrena Vosper Henry. They had 9 children. Do you or anyone please have any info on either Edward Ashworth Platt or the children?
