Hi there Please can someone tell me if you can get Birth Certificates for people that were born in the 1860's. My great grandmother was born in 1869 in Port Elizabeth. I know nowadays one needs an ID number but those days did they even have such a thing. Thanks Patty
To the best of my knowledge birth certificates weren't introduced in the various Republics & colonies until well after this date. When writing to Buckingham Palace some years ago my father had to use my great-aunt's baptismal certificate to show proof of her age as she was born prior to birth Certificates being issued in the Transvaal Republic.
